Chapter 2

Author: Glorious Cotton
By the time everyone rushed to the spare bedroom in the staff quarters, I'd just set up the folding bed and was moving it to the corner.

Melanie bit her lip. "Wendy would rather sleep here than use my art studio? Does she dislike me?"

Jasper's expression darkened again.

However, Dr. Thompson immediately grabbed my hands to stop me. "Who instructed her to move her own furniture around like that? Her vitals haven't even stabilized yet!"

The alarm on my health monitoring wristband started ringing again.

Just before my vision went black, I heard Jasper snap impatiently, "It's been one thing after another with her! How can all these episodes occur at such convenient times?

"I bet she knows Grandpa George and Grandma Naomi are coming back soon, so she started putting on a show in advance to make them feel sorry for her!"

…

When I woke up, Mom was sitting beside my bed. Dark circles shadowed her eyes. When she saw my eyes open, she visibly relaxed.

"Don't go wandering around anymore. I've explained things to Melanie. She won't hold it against you."

I was a little confused. Melanie was the one who'd accused me of hating her. Why was Mom acting like I should be glad Melanie wasn't going to hold the situation against me?

Meanwhile, Mom took out a sapphire necklace and said, "This is the gift your maternal grandma prepared to welcome you into the family. Keep it safe, and stop saying you don't deserve anything."

I'd only just taken it when Melanie appeared in the doorway, her face pale. "So Grandma Polly already prepared a gift from Wendy?"

Forcing a smile, she continued, "That's nice. I guess the necklace I've worn for ten years is yours, too. I was only keeping it safe until you came back."

Mom immediately hurried after Melanie to comfort her. I stared at the necklace for two minutes, growing more and more uneasy the longer I looked. I wasn't worthy of wearing such a large sapphire.

I put the necklace back in its box and handed it to a maid to return to the dressing room, along with the new coat Mom had given me.

That evening, Melanie suddenly burst into tears, claiming her necklace was missing.

Jasper stormed in with several of the household staff and immediately began rummaging through my worn canvas bag.

"You just got back, and you're already stealing things? Is that what they taught you at the orphanage?"

I shook my head. "I didn't touch her things."

"How dare you deny it!"

He ordered the staff to search the entire room, but they found nothing.

Melanie gently reminded him, "Wendy was wearing the new coat Mom gave her today. Why don't you check the pockets?"

Sneering, Jasper went to the dressing room to retrieve the coat. A minute later, he returned with an ugly look on his face. The coat had already been put in Melanie's closet, and the necklace she claimed was missing was lying right there in its pocket.

Eric had gotten hold of the security footage from the hallway. "At 4:00 pm, Ashley Hill, Ms. Melanie's maid, was seen holding the coat."

Melanie's tears immediately began to fall. "I must have remembered wrong. I've been getting such depressive episodes lately, and my memory's been all over the place. I really didn't mean to suspect Wendy."

Jasper immediately shut off the footage. "It was just a misunderstanding. Everyone misplaces things by accident sometimes."

As for Ashley, who'd taken the coat, he simply told her to take two days off. He didn't even ask her why she was seen holding the coat, nor did he tell her to apologize.

Dad frowned, but all he said was, "Melanie is sick. Don't upset her."

As if to make it up to me, Mom took my hand and said, "This weekend, we'll organize a party to welcome you home and officially introduce you to everyone."

All at once, Melanie started wheezing. Gripping the edge of the table, she asked quietly, "Does that mean everyone will only think of Wendy as your daughter and not me?"

Mom hesitated.

Five minutes later, the "welcome home party" became a simple "gathering".

I nodded. "It's fine with me. I don't deserve to have so many people come just for me anyway."

Perhaps feeling a little guilty, Mom had her assistant bring me the latest smartphone. "If anything happens, you can just call me right away."

I felt uncomfortable about owning such an expensive phone. The old one Ruby Lane, the orphanage director, used cost less than 100 dollars. The price of this one was over a dozen times more.

Therefore, as soon as Mom left, I immediately performed a factory reset and left the phone in the living room.

Melanie happened to see it when she came down the stairs. She stared at the phone for a long time before smirking.

Dad was just about to say something to me when he got a video call. My paternal grandparents, George Harmon and Naomi Wilson, as well as my maternal grandparents, Edgar Steele and Polly Atwell, all appeared on the screen.

Grandma Polly immediately questioned, "Why has Wendy's welcome home party been called off?"

When no one answered, Grandpa George scoffed. "We'll be arriving tomorrow evening. If anyone mistreats Wendy, they can forget about getting their hands on either the Harmons' or the Steeles' companies."

Melanie whipped her head up and stared at me, her tears absent this time.

A year later, my health seemed to have stabilized for good. The charity fund also helped its 100th child. At the celebration, a seven-year-old girl stared at the cake on the table but refused to take a piece no matter what.I asked her, "Do you not like cake?"She shook her head. "I do. But the last piece should go to a better-behaved child."Those words sounded all too familiar.I served her the cake myself and said, "If you like it, go ahead and take it.""But do I deserve to have it?"I crouched down and looked at her. "You do. Cake isn't some kind of prize. You don't need to earn it by being well-behaved."She took a cautious bite, and her eyes immediately lit up. I suddenly found myself smiling, too.As it turned out, I didn't need to go back to the past to heal my wounded inner child. Giving the advice the younger me should've received to another child in the same situation worked just as well.Mom and Dad messaged me once every week. They didn't pressure me to come hom

The new party was held after three days. The media, company shareholders, and all the friends and relatives of both the Harmon and Steele families were all in attendance.Someone whispered, "She's only just returned to the family, and she's already forced out the adopted daughter. She's pretty ruthless.""The family elders even gave her shares in the company. I bet she'd been plotting this from the start.""Being sick was only an act. She's just a manipulative schemer."I heard them, but I didn't retreat to the staff area. I walked to the main table, pulled out the chair labeled Wendy Harmon, and sat down.Jasper stepped onto the stage and picked up the microphone. "Half of what that article online said was true."The audience erupted in an uproar.Mom's face was pale, but she followed him onto the stage. "Melanie, the daughter we raised, was indeed taken away by the police."Dad took over. "But Wendy, our biological daughter, didn't force her out. We were the ones who called t

The day I was discharged from the hospital, the Harmons arrived in three cars. Mom and Dad came in one, Jasper came in another, and my grandparents came in the third.I headed toward the last one without even thinking about it.Jasper stood beside the car door, his hand still raised as though he'd been about to open it for me."It's fine. I deserve that," he said with a rueful smile. No one responded. When we returned to the Harmon residence, the ornamental pond by the entrance had already been filled in.Mom had personally prepared a room for me. This time, it wasn't Melanie's old art studio or one of the guest bedrooms. It was a newly renovated bedroom that belonged solely to me.There were no extravagant evening gowns in the closet, just clothes Eric had prepared in my size. The necklace with the massive sapphire was on the table.Mom stood in the doorway, not wanting to put me off by coming in."Your Grandma Polly wants you to have it. Susan was soon brought in for questioning. The first thing she did when she entered the room wasn't to admit her guilt. Instead, she shouted at Melanie, "Everything I did was for your sake!"Melanie recoiled as if she'd been burned. "Don't talk to me!"Susan continued shouting frantically, "You were such a healthy and beautiful baby! Why should you have had to suffer with me? She was born sick. She wouldn't have survived anyway. Sending her to an orphanage was already more than good enough for her!"Grandma Naomi grabbed a water glass, ready to throw it at her, but Grandpa George stopped her. "Don't dirty your hands for the likes of her."I stared at Susan. So, I hadn't been born believing I was unworthy. Someone had taught me that on the very first day of my life.At the orphanage, I would give away the last piece of cake even though I wanted it. When I came first in class, I would say the test had been easy. When someone complimented me, I always expected them to mock me in the

When I woke up, only my grandparents were around in the hospital room.Grandpa Edgar was peeling an apple, though he was doing a terrible job of it. He'd gouged out a lot of the flesh in the process.Grandpa George looked at it disdainfully. "Did a dog chew up that apple?"Grandpa Edgar put down the knife. "If you think you can do better, go ahead and prove it."They were about to start bickering when they noticed I was awake and clammed up at once.I instinctively shrank beneath the blanket. "Is this room really expensive?"Grandma Naomi stuffed the hospital invoice into a drawer. "Why would it be expensive? Your Grandpa Edgar owns this hospital."Grandpa Edgar immediately corrected her, "I only own a part of it.""That still makes it practically hers," she retorted. That comment made me stiffen. Mine? That notion sounded more foreign to me than anything I'd ever heard.Suddenly, I heard an argument outside the door. Mom wanted to come in, but Grandma Polly refused to let h

Grandma Naomi was the first to rush over and catch me in her arms. "Quick! Call an ambulance!"When Grandpa George saw the things I'd left on the table, his expression hardened.Grandma Polly knelt beside me, her hands shaking so badly she could barely hold her phone. "Wendy, can you hear me?"Mom finally snapped out of her daze and tried to reach for me, but Grandpa Edgar stood in her way."Don't touch her."Mom froze. "Dad, I'm her mother."Looking her in the eye, Grandpa Edgar said in a quiet but alarmingly cold voice, "Aren't you the one who said you'd prefer it if you guys never brought her back?"A silence fell over the living room.Jasper was pale as he explained, "It was just some heated words said in a moment of anger, Grandpa Edgar.""Just some heated words, you say?"Grandma Naomi whipped her head up. "Wendy has a weak heart, yet you people went on and on about how undeserving she is, each one more cruel than the last! What's the matter? You didn't want to waste th
