Demetrius's POV

I tightened my jaw in utter annoyance. I had left the room in a rage, maybe in a haste — I couldn't trust myself, or my wolf, the longer I stayed in close proximity to her. Every second in that office had felt like standing too close to a flame I had no business touching, and the moment I felt my control slipping, I'd made the only choice that still felt like mine: I left.

I stormed into the forest to clear my head. How I hated losing control. It wasn't something I allowed myself, not since I'd taken this pack and rebuilt it from the ashes of what had been left behind. Control was the one thing I trusted completely, and she had already managed to shake it in less than an hour.

I wouldn't deny it — my supposed mate was beautiful. Auburn hair, blue eyes, a petite body with the promise of full hips and the soft swell of her breasts, all of it visible even as she'd struggled to keep her breathing steady in that thin nightdress she'd failed to hide beneath the dirty prison blanket. I'd noticed every inch of it, and I hated myself a little for it.

Shit. I knew I was drawn to her. Attracted to her in more ways than I wanted to admit — in the way the mere thought of her body made mine react, in ways I didn't like and didn't want to accept. It was the fault of the mate bond, the moon goddess pairing us together as though I had no say in the matter at all. Almost laughable, honestly, that she thought I'd simply accept some random girl she'd chosen for me, as if my years of careful, bloody rebuilding meant nothing next to her decree.

I didn't want a wolfless girl, one whose identity I didn't know and couldn't trust, standing beside me as my mate. I couldn't hand my pack — rebuilt from scratch after the attack that had gutted us — to a total stranger to rule beside me as Luna. I wouldn't let some bond decide that for me. I fumed silently, the anger a low simmer under my skin that refused to cool no matter how far I walked.

Honestly, if it were left to my wolf, Altracas, we would have already claimed her. Already mated with her. I could feel exactly how badly he wanted it, how saddened he was by the fact that she had no wolf of her own — no counterpart for him to run beside under the moonlight, no wolf to mark and be marked by in return. Still, he wanted her. Wanted her enough that the absence of her wolf didn't matter to him the way it mattered to me.

Wolves are more primal in nature. More animalistic. The elders always said instinct ran truer than reason. I didn't think so — not when instinct was screaming at me to go back for a woman I'd only just met, a woman who could unravel everything I'd spent years holding together.

I could feel Altracas clawing at the back of my mind, insistent, restless, a headache building behind my eyes from his constant whining, his attempts to force his way to the surface so he could go soothe our mate. I struck a deal with him — a run, maybe a hunt, if he behaved. If he didn't try to drag us back toward Armida.

I felt him roll his eyes before he agreed, sullen and reluctant. I knew the truce wouldn't last. It never did with him. But I'd cross that particular bridge when I came to it.

I walked deeper into the forest, toward my favorite place to shift — a creek tucked beneath a waterfall, hidden from the rest of the pack. I used to come here often as a boy, back when my mother was still alive, back when she'd let me play beside her wolf in the shallows while she watched from the bank. I hadn't been back in longer than I wanted to admit.

I stripped out of my clothes and set them on a flat rock at the water's edge, and a moment later the familiar ache of bones reshaping and rearranging took hold of me until I landed on all fours. Altracas let out a long, aching howl of longing, one that silenced every bird in the canopy above us, as though the whole forest understood there was a bigger predator moving through it now. My wolf stood tall — huge, proud, coated in midnight black fur, eyes burning gold in the fading morning light. There were rumors across the continent that I was one of the largest wolves ever seen, and looking at his reflection rippling in the creek, I could almost believe them. Cocky bastard, I thought, allowing myself a small, private smile, before he broke into a sprint, speed building until the trees blurred past us like smoke, until we were moving faster than anything human should be able to move.

Altracas ran for what felt like hours, never slowing, never tiring, chasing down a rabbit somewhere near the ridge and tearing into it without ceremony. For a while, at least, there was nothing but the wind and the ground passing beneath us, no mate bond, no responsibility, no woman sleeping in my house wearing my scent like she had a right to it.

It didn't last.

Even mid-run, even with blood still on his teeth, I felt Altracas's attention drift back the way we'd come — back toward the house, back toward her. He didn't say anything this time. He didn't have to. I already knew what he wanted, and I already knew I wasn't ready to give it to him.

I made a mental note to swim before heading home, to wash the last of the hunt from his fur, and to figure out, somewhere between here and there, how exactly I was supposed to face her again without losing the ground I'd only just barely managed to hold onto.

Armida's POVI woke to warmth, and for a while that was all I knew.Sunlight lay across the sheets in pale gold bars. Somewhere beneath my ribs there was a new and unfamiliar hum, soft as a purr, steady as a second heartbeat. I lay still and listened to it, afraid that if I moved it would disappear."Armida."Demetrius sat on the edge of the bed. A thin dark line ran across his shoulder where something had cut him. He looked as if he hadn't closed his eyes once."Hey, love." His hand came up to my cheek, careful, like I might shatter. "How do you feel? Tell me everything. Any pain, any dizziness, anything at all.""I'm okay," I said, and it surprised me how true it was. "Tired. A little strange." I touched his shoulder, and my fingers trembled. "Demetrius, your shoulder. Did I...""It's nothing." He caught my hand and pressed a kiss into my palm. "It stopped bleeding hours ago. I'm not worried about me, sweetheart. I'm worried about you.""Then why are you smiling?"He let out a brea

  • Born of Moon and Magic   CHAPTER 92

Demetrius' POVThe bed was empty before I woke up.The warmth beside me was fading, and through the bond came a strange, dreamlike hush, as if Armida were somewhere very far away and very close at once."Armida?"Her side of the sheets lay thrown back. The bedroom door stood open. Down the hall, bare feet whispered over wood.I was out of bed and moving before I'd thought. I found her at the top of the stairs in her thin nightgown, her hair loose, her eyes open and utterly blank. She descended slowly, one hand trailing the banister, as though following a voice only she could hear."Armida." I kept my tone gentle. "Love, wake up."Nothing. She reached the bottom of the stairs and crossed the hall toward the front door."Armida!" Louder now. I caught her wrist, and the shock of her skin nearly made me let go. It burned, not with fever, but with a low, thrumming heat, like a stone left in the sun. She pulled free without effort, without even looking at me, and the front door swung open

  • Born of Moon and Magic   CHAPTER 91

Armida's POVI slept for almost a whole day. When I finally opened my eyes, sunlight was spilling across the bed and Demetrius was in the chair beside it, his elbows on his knees. He looked like he hadn't left once."You're awake." He was beside me before I could sit up, one hand cradling my face as though checking I was real. "How do you feel?""Hungry," I croaked. "And fine. Really fine."His laugh came out unsteady. "Florence left soup outside the door for when you wake ."I ate every drop of it. Then I looked at him and said, "I want to see Lilith.""Armida...""I need to see for myself that she's okay. And the baby. Please."He studied me for a long moment, the Alpha and the worried mate arguing behind his eyes. "We go slowly," he said at last. "And if you get dizzy, we turn around.""Deal."Lilith was sitting up against her pillows with color in her cheeks and Jackson hovering at her shoulder as though she might vanish. When she saw me, her whole face crumpled."Come here," she

  • Born of Moon and Magic   CHAPTER 90

Armida's POVI heard Lilith before I saw her.It wasn't a scream. A scream would have been easier. It was a ragged, wet, breaking sound that lifted every hair on my arms, and I took her porch steps two at a time with my heart slamming against my ribs.Cornelia met me at the bedroom door, her sleeves soaked to the elbow, her face grim in a way I had never seen it."Armida. Good. Come here, quickly."The room smelled of iron and sweat and fear. Lilith lay propped against a mountain of pillows, hair plastered to her forehead, skin the color of candle wax. The sheets beneath her were dark and sodden. Too dark. Too much."Lilith?"Her eyes found me, glassy and unfocused, but she smiled, and the smile nearly broke me."There you are," she whispered. "I told them you'd come.""I'm here." I dropped beside the bed and took her hand. It was ice cold. "I'm right here. You're doing so well.""Liar." A breathless, shaky laugh. "It hurts, Armida.""I know.""Where's Jack?""On his way," I said, and

Armida's POVDemetrius came home just after sunset, and I knew the moment he walked through the door that something was wrong. He hid it well. He hung his jacket on the hook, asked if I had eaten, and smiled when I said Florence had sent over enough food to feed the whole house. But the bond doesn't care how well a man composes his face. Through it I felt a low, restless hum, like a wolf pacing behind a locked door.He was keeping something from me.I opened my mouth to ask. Then I remembered the small, folded secret sitting in my own drawer upstairs, the one I still hadn't mentioned either, and the question died in my throat. Who was I to demand honesty?"You're quiet," he said."So are you.""Long day." He crossed the kitchen and stopped in front of me, close enough that I had to tilt my head back. "Pack business. Nothing that can't wait until morning."I could have pushed. Instead I looked at the tired line between his brows, at the dirt dried along his knuckles, and something in m

Demetrius' POVArmida slept for the first twenty minutes of the drive, her head against the window and one hand curled loosely in her lap.She had a hangover she refused to admit to. When she woke, she squinted at the sunlight like it had personally insulted her."Don't say anything," she said."I wasn't going to.""You were thinking it very loudly."I kept my eyes on the road, but the corner of my mouth betrayed me. "Drink some water."She drained half the bottle in one go and sank back against the seat. For a while she watched the trees slide past, the road winding toward the Black Moon boundary, and her expression slowly went quiet."Leo and Cleo promised to visit again soon," she said. "And Mom wants to come for the next full moon.""Then they'll come.""You don't mind?""Armida." I glanced at her. "They're your family. My house is your house."She looked at me a moment too long, and I felt that soft, unfamiliar pull in my chest, the one I still hadn't learned to name. Then she lo
