Chapter 1

Author: Washing Wheat
This was a world where everyone could join the verdict, and conviction was decided by votes.

My brother and I, both in a vegetative state, had sensory caps forced onto our heads. In an instant, our consciousness was uploaded onto the massive screen above the judgment table.

The rebirth trial was about to begin. The screen displayed the two names on trial—Emma Harper and Ethan Harper.

When our names appeared, the live chat exploded.

"That's that internet-famous family, right? I heard their parents favor the daughter and treat the son like crap."

"Yeah, Emma made headlines recently. She ran naked on the streets. Can you believe it?"

"That's nothing. I heard she's violent and sleeps around."

"Gross. No way I'm voting for her."

The insults kept flooding the live chat. Just then, the judge's gavel sounded sharply.

The judge on the platform announced solemnly, "The rebirth trial begins now. The applicants presented charges of parental disrespect, assault, and murder.

"The public will vote to determine whether you are guilty. If convicted, you will face immediate brain death on the spot. Defendants, do you have anything to say?"

My brother, Ethan, was the first to speak. His voice cracked as he said, "Mom and Dad loves Emma so much. They'll definitely vote for her. Please help me, everyone. I don't want to die."

Comments started scrolling across the screen.

"Aw, poor kid. He didn't receive any love from his parents. I'm voting for him."

"Same here. If his parents won't vote, we will."

Unlike Ethan, I stared at the stoic judge and asked, "After I'm reborn, can I request a new pair of parents? It's fine if the answer is no. My parents will still die, anyway."

The crowd gasped, and the live chat blew up again.

"Is she for real? In the videos, her parents look like they'd die for her. How can she curse them like that?"

"That's messed up. How dark do you have to be to say that?"

"She's a monster. She deserves the worst kind of death. How can anyone be this wicked?"

"I think there's no need for a trial. Just convict her and trigger the brain death already."

On the stands, my hunched parents wept as they stared at the screen in utter disbelief.

"Emma, you're our precious daughter. How could you say that?"

Whispers filled the room, but I showed no reaction on the screen.

How could I say that? It was precisely because of my "dear" parents.

The gavel struck again, and silence fell.

"The first charge is parental disrespect. With that in mind, have both of you fulfilled your duties to your parents?"

Ethan nodded frantically. Fearing his mental projection might be too blurred, he said with desperate conviction, "I love my parents and will do everything to honor and care for them."

I scoffed and said, "Those two monsters don't deserve to be my parents."

The crowd erupted again.

"That's unbelievable. I've never seen such an ungrateful kid."

"In those videos her parents filmed, they gave her the absolute best of everything. Yet, this is what they get in return."

"I'm not going to watch this anymore. I'm voting to kill her."

On the opposite side, Dad and Mom cried, but I caught a faint smile at the corner of their lips.

At that moment, the trial system finished scanning our memories.

In Ethan's, he happily sang the birthday song with Dad and Mom.

Once they finished their livestream, he brought out a bowl of freshly simmered soup.

Someone commented, "Ethan is such a good kid."

"From the videos his parents posted, it looks like he's almost invisible at home but never complains. What a good-natured kid."

Someone in the courtroom said, "This is sad. His parents just ruined him. The dead should be left in peace.""Maybe he couldn't take those demon parents anymore and chose to leave this world."I said nothing.I wondered whether Ethan would have treated me that way if Archie and Katherine hadn't pushed him to do it.When we were kids, he used to bring me food. But as we grew up, we became enemies.Ethan's death drew everyone's attention to one place. Archie and Katherine tried to slip away while no one was looking. They had barely taken a few steps before the judge noticed. Bailiffs quickly surrounded them.Katherine's face went ghostly pale. She trembled as she muttered, "This shouldn't be happening. My daughter is a lucky star. How could I lose? Emma, come save me…"However, no one responded. They were handcuffed and taken away by judicial officers. What awaited them was endless punishment. At the very last moment, Archie suddenly turned around. With a jagged stone he had so

Dad, on the other hand, looked completely unhinged. He kept muttering, "No way. This can't be real. All the luck was mine. How could I be convicted?"Both of them mentioned the word "luck", leaving everyone confused.Had they lost their minds?Suddenly, the Mirror of Retribution flashed red, and a piercing alarm blared."Alert. Alert. Abnormal memories were detected for Archie Harper and Katherine Austin. Loading complete. Beginning playback."Inside their bedroom, Mom grabbed Dad's hands and laughed with excitement. "You're Archie, and I'm Katherine. Then our daughter must be that lucky star."Dad smiled broadly, his eyes bright. "I didn't expect to transmigrate into such perfect identities. I remember that as long as we abuse that lucky star hard enough, all her luck will transfer to us."They gazed at each other, full of affection."Then what are we waiting for? Let the lucky star be born."The scene changed, revealing Katherine frowning at her phone. "The views are terribl

The judge announced, "The rebirth trial has ended. Now, the court will proceed with the retribution trial.""What? We only applied for the rebirth trial, not the retribution trial. Is this a mistake?"Dad's and Mom's smiles froze instantly as they stared at the judge in confusion.I chuckled softly. "What, you get to apply for the rebirth trial, but I'm not allowed to apply for the retribution trial?"Live chat comments scrolled quickly across the screen."This is great! Emma might actually be saved now.""Hahaha! The retribution trial is practically made for that family of three.""I'm officially a fan of Emma. That's a smart move.""Send those two up, and let's see what crimes they've committed."The retribution trial was the only trial that didn't require a public vote. No sinner could find mercy before the Mirror of Retribution. Those guilty of grave sins would die on the spot. The gavel struck."The retribution trial begins now. On trial are Archie Harper and Katherine

With that, Ethan and Mom left the house. Only Dad remained, staring at me with a cold gaze.He made a quick call. Ten minutes later, four massive thugs walked in."The guests will still be coming over. Don't even think about running. These men will be watching you 24/7."I didn't say a single word. I was busy calculating the odds of escaping from four grown men.But no matter how I looked at it, the chances were zero.Dad huffed when I ignored him. "Don't blame me, Emma. It's just your luck."He left without explaining that cryptic remark. After that day, I never saw them again.Being watched by four strangers was surprisingly better than before. At least no one was forcing pills down my throat. I finally had the energy to walk and even run.One day, when Mr. Wang opened the door, I took the chance to stab him with a sharpened toothbrush.Mom, Dad, and Ethan rushed back, groveling at Mr. Holland's feet.Dad pleaded, "This is that bitch's fault, Mr. Holland. Please be the bigg

The judge's voice rang out, heavy with authority. "Based on the voting results, both Emma Harper and Ethan Harper are found not guilty on the second charge of assault."Whispered murmurs filled the courtroom."I knew Ethan's charge wouldn't stick, but I'm still pissed.""Same. I want to see if those parents stay cold-blooded if their precious son dies.""Wait, isn't what Ethan and his parents did to Emma assault? Why doesn't that count?""Well, the trial is based on the applicants' claims, and in this case, the applicants are his parents. So, what exactly is the issue?"The gavel struck from above, and the room fell silent once more."The third charge is murder. Have either of you ever killed a person or attempted to commit murder?"The moment the words were spoken, Dad's and Mom's eyes lit up.They knew that this was the charge that would finally end me.For the first two charges, public opinion could be swayed by emotion. But for this one, only the hard facts mattered.Eth

"You ungrateful bitch. How dare you hit me! You must have a death wish. Do you have any idea how much I paid your parents?" the man growled. It felt like an eternity before he finally stopped the assault. My face throbbed with a searing pain, and warm blood from my nose slicked my chin.Through a daze, I heard him pick up the phone."Get a few guys over here. I've got an influencer here."The words jolted me awake. The moment he stepped out to tend to his head wound, I scrambled out the window.Fortunately, I was on the first floor. I still had a slim chance of survival.Otherwise, if the fall didn't kill me, I would have been tortured to death in that room.Terror fueled my sprint out of that hellhole. I wandered the city streets in the dead of night, looking like a lonely ghost. The next day, Dad and Mom tracked me down and dragged me home.By then, the video of me running naked through the streets had already gone viral."Oh god. I feel so bad for Emma.""I remember when
