Chapter 2

Auteur: Rabbit Radish
Everyone froze, and the scene fell into instant silence.

Irwin was shaking with fury, his arms trembling even as he held me.

"Mom, what are you doing now? Mr. Ramirez is here to save Helena's life! Get out of the way!"

But Mom stared daggers at Mr. Ramirez and shrieked, "Who are you? I don't even know you! Why should Helena get in your car? What if you're a human trafficker?"

The second those words left her mouth, we were all stunned. Even Mr. Ramirez looked totally blindsided.

"Rosanna, what are you talking about? It's me, Ronny! I grew up with Tyrone. We just had dinner together last month, don't you remember?"

Dad was also dumbfounded. He rushed forward and grabbed Mom by the arm, his eyes filled with shock and fury.

"Rosanna, have you lost your mind? How could you possibly not know Ronny? He sent gifts when both Helena and Irwin were born. Every holiday, we all had dinner together, and you were there every single time. And now you're saying you don't know him?"

"That's right!" Mom shook off Dad's hand and remained dead set on blocking the car, refusing to budge an inch. "There are plenty of people in this world who look alike, so why should I trust him? What if he's a con man? If anything happens to Helena, can you take responsibility for that?"

Irwin, holding me and watching my breathing grow weaker and weaker, finally broke down completely. He dropped to his knees with a thud in front of Mom, weeping and begging, "Mom, please stop this! Helena's dying!

"Any later and there really won't be any saving her! Mr. Ramirez watched us grow up—he would never hurt us!"

But Mom remained utterly unmoved.

Dad was so furious that he clutched his chest tightly and roared, "Rosanna, how long are you going to keep this up? Helena is our daughter, for crying out loud! And she's dying! Just what on earth are you trying to do?"

"What am I trying to do?" Mom suddenly raised her voice, her tone both aggrieved and venomous. "You should know this is all your fault!"

Dad was instantly stunned. "What does Ronny kindly coming to save Helena have to do with me? What did I even do wrong?"

Under everyone's disbelieving gaze, Mom finally screamed out the truth hysterically.

"Last week was the 20th anniversary of the day we first started making eyes at each other! I gave you two weeks' notice to celebrate it with me, but you completely forgot about it. You didn't even wish me a happy anniversary.

"Tyrone, you've got such a shit memory that you can't even remember a single day that has anything to do with me. Well, now I'm going to show you what happens when you go through life not giving a crap about anything!"

Dad just lost it. "Rosanna, can you be reasonable for once? How many anniversaries do you have to celebrate in a single year? Our wedding anniversary, dating anniversary—you even make us celebrate the anniversary of our first date and the first time we held hands!

"Name one time I didn't take it seriously. Back then, I had just taken over a new project. I was surviving on two hours of sleep a night and was practically running myself into the ground. That's the only reason it slipped my mind!

"But right after, I gave you my debit card to make up for it. So, why do you still have to bring this up now?"

When Mom saw Dad had the audacity to talk back, her anger flared even hotter.

"What gives you the right to yell at me? If you messed up, the right thing to do is to own up to it. Just because I accepted your debit card doesn't mean I forgave you! And you know what else? Back when you married me, you said you loved how romantic I was. Now all of a sudden I'm too much for you?"

Dad knew there was no reasoning with Mom. Seeing me fading in and out of consciousness in Irwin's arms, he was so frantic that he dropped straight to his knees in front of the traffic officers.

"Officers, I promise I'll take the test. But please, can you get my daughter to the hospital first? She drank pesticide by accident and is barely hanging on. If we don't get her there soon, she's not going to make it."

The two traffic officers quickly helped Dad to his feet.

One look at me, barely clinging to life in Irwin's arms, and they hastily briefed the backup officers who'd just freed up to assist. Then, they lifted me into the patrol car.

With sirens blaring every inch of the way, we finally burst through the ER entrance.

I figured once they wheeled me into the trauma bay, I'd be out of the woods. But then, Mom started up again.

Mom opened her mouth, but not a single word came out. Her lips trembled violently, and tears smeared all over her face."Helena, I was wrong. I know that now."I cut her off. "You say that every time. When I was alive, you said you were wrong. After I died, you still said the same thing. But then what? What did you do after that?"You held my photo and cried. You wrote letters. You took pills. Did you do all that because you loved me or because you couldn't live with yourself?"Mom shuddered all over."You couldn't bear the guilt, the loneliness, and the fact that Dad and Irwin both left you. So, you took your own life. You thought you were coming to keep me company, but really, you were running away."I looked straight into her eyes, speaking each word deliberately. "Mom, you have never truly faced me. Not when I was alive, and not now that I'm dead."Mom's lips parted. She wanted to argue, to say it wasn't like that, and to tell me she truly loved me.But the words wouldn't c

On the other end of the line, Irwin's voice was ice-cold."Mom, I'm going abroad and won't be coming back. Take care of yourself."Mom's hand shook as she gripped the phone. "Irwin, do you hate me?""Yes," Irwin replied simply, but it pierced Mom's heart like a knife. "But I hate myself even more. I was the one who got Helena killed, and I'll never forgive myself for the rest of my life."With that, he hung up.Still clutching the phone, Mom sat on the couch in a daze for what felt like forever. The next morning, she went to the bank and transferred all her savings to Irwin. Then, she canceled all her licenses and closed out every account in her name. Finally, she sat down at my desk and spread out a fresh sheet of stationery."Helena, I'm coming to be with you."After that, she opened the bottle of sleeping pills she had been hoarding and poured every single one into her mouth, swallowing them. This time, she finally didn't have to wake up again. After Mom died, it was a ne

After returning from the cemetery, Dad slammed a set of divorce papers down onto the coffee table."Sign it. You've already destroyed this family," he said, biting out each word. "I will not live under the same roof as the person who killed Helena."Mom's face went white in an instant. She threw herself forward and clung desperately to the hem of Dad's pants.Tears burst forth as she screamed, "No, I won't sign it! Tyrone, I was wrong. I really know I was wrong. I'll change, I swear! Can we start over? I'll never act crazy or cause trouble again!""It's too late." Dad shook off her hand coldly, just the way she used to. "Helena isn't coming back. Every single time I see your face, I'll remember the way she looked before she died."What did you do when she was trembling all over from pain, vomiting blood, and crying and begging you? I will never forgive you for the rest of my life."Just then, Irwin came out of his room as well. With his backpack slung over his shoulders and a sui

That night, Dad finally made up his mind. After contacting the funeral home, he came with two staff members. Using a key borrowed from the nurse, he quietly opened the door to the hospital room.Mom jolted awake instantly. She lunged forward desperately and spread her arms wide to shield me."What do you think you're doing? Don't you dare touch Helena!"Dad stood in the doorway, his voice hoarse. "Rosanna, wake up. Helena is dead. She died at your hands. If you keep stopping us, she won't even be able to rest in peace.""No!" Mom's hair was a wild, tangled mess. "She's my daughter! I'm staying with her! No one is allowed to take her away!"Dad shot a look at the two staff members, who immediately stepped forward, each grabbing one of Mom's arms.Mom kicked and clawed with everything she had, her wails echoing through the entire building."Let me go! Let me go! Helena! Helena—"But she was outnumbered. All she could do was watch helplessly as they carried me out of the hospital

From that day on, Mom went completely insane. She stayed by my body every second, refusing to leave. If anyone came near me, she'd fight them off, as if her life depended on it.When a nurse brought a white sheet to cover me, Mom grabbed a pillow and hurled it at her."Don't you dare cover her! She's still alive! Are you trying to smother her?" she shrieked, her voice so shrill it was terrifying. The nurse stumbled back two steps from the impact, then looked helplessly at the doctor. The doctor sighed and waved his hand. Then, he led the nurse out of the hospital room. The moment the door closed, Mom turned around. The ferocity on her face vanished instantly, replaced by a gentleness I had never seen before. She brought over a basin of warm water and a clean towel. Sitting down by the bed, she gently took my hand and said, "Helena, be good now. Let me clean you up. Once you're all clean, you'll wake up."With her head bowed, she meticulously wiped my fingers one by one, not eve

"Helena, I've already withdr—"But before she could even finish her sentence, Mom's smile froze.I lay motionless on the operating table. My face was sheet-white, my lips tinged blue, and my chest was completely still."Helena?" Mom's voice suddenly wavered. "Helena, I'm talking to you, you hear?"No one answered her.Irwin followed behind, his legs giving out from under him. He hit the floor hard on his knees, tears pouring down his face in endless streams."Helena, you…" Mom stumbled toward the bed, her hand shaking as she stretched it out and pressed her trembling fingers under my nose. There was no breath at all.As if burned, she yanked her hand back. She froze for two seconds, then grabbed my shoulders and shook me like a woman possessed."Helena, stop pretending to be asleep! Wake up! I really did bring the money back—just open your eyes and look at me!"My head swayed left and right with her shaking, like a marionette whose strings had been cut."Helena, do you hear
