Chapter 2

Author: Perfect Timing
My words made Wesley tense up. "What are you talking about?

"The police are already here, and you're still denying it?"

I was locked up at the station. A week later, the trial began, and I kept insisting I was innocent. I begged over and over to appeal. However, the police pulled out the footage: the key evidence that sealed my fate.

"The dashcam clearly recorded the entire process of Nevaeh committing the murders."

On the screen was my face, twisted and icy, my eyes filled with something vicious. I was even muttering under my breath, "Anyone who tries to take what's mine deserves to die."

Then, I slammed on the gas. The couple chasing after me dropped to the ground instantly. Blood splattered across the windshield. However, I did not stop. I reversed the car and drove over them again.

Again.

And again.

I only drove away after their bodies were crushed beyond recognition.

As if that was not enough, the car was covered in my fingerprints.

The case was too brutal. Too shocking. The judge had sentenced me to death on the spot.

Even up to the moment of my death, I could not understand one thing: why was it my face in that dashcam footage?

After I died, Wesley publicly announced that he would adopt the baby.

"I'll make up for Nevaeh's mistakes," he said.

My parents collapsed under the weight of public shame and hatred.

Wesley? He was praised across the internet.

Maybe even the heavens thought my death was unjust, so I was given another chance.

A second life.

This time, I would avoid the trap. Find the truth.

At the airport, I quickly met up with my supervisor, Joseph Brooks. We went over contract details during the flight.

That night, we met the client, had dinner together, and checked into the same hotel.

Early the next morning, I suddenly received a notice from the police.

A small part of me held onto hope.

This time, I was not even there. They could not possibly pin it on me again.

However, I was wrong. The police took me in anyway.

Before we even reached the station, a crowd rushed toward us. Every single person was holding something in their hands. Some had sticks. Some had signs. The way they looked at me, it was like they wanted me dead right there.

"It's her! She's the one who killed Mr. Long and his wife and stole their baby!"

"Where's the child? Give the child back!"

The officers quickly stepped in front of me, trying to calm the crowd.

It did not work. There were too many of them. Some people were even holding banners high above their heads.

"If the police don't execute her on the spot, you're protecting a murderer!"

"She crushed their bodies into pulp! Someone like her deserves to die!"

"She's a danger to society! Why haven't you declared her death already?"

"Death is too easy for her! If you won't do anything, hand her over to us!"

Every word they shouted pressed down on the police.

In that moment, I realized something was very, very wrong. "I didn't kill anyone!"

At first, when the police contacted me, I thought they just needed a statement. However, it was clear. This was something else entirely.

The moment I spoke, the crowd erupted. Someone spat at me in disgust.

"Stop pretending! Where's the baby? Hand him over now!"

"You killed them! You should pay for it! Even dying a hundred times wouldn't be enough!"

They moved closer, step by step, their emotions spiraling out of control. Their voices shook the air.

I was trapped in the middle, a chill racing up my spine, my scalp prickling with fear. "How can you prove it was me? I didn't kill anyone!"

As soon as I finished speaking, one of the officers looked at me calmly.

He pulled out his phone and opened the dashcam footage.

I looked. What I saw made my blood run icy.

"Look carefully. That's your face, isn't it, Nevaeh?

"And you're still denying it?"

My whole body trembled. "How is this possible?"

Edmund was the first to open the recording. After just one glance, he gasped."How is this possible?"Every officer immediately sensed something was wrong and crowded around him."What the hell is going on?"Wasn't that Nevaeh's face before? Why is it Lily now?"What is happening here?"Lily's eyes widened. Even her breathing became shallow and careful. She turned toward Wesley, panic breaking through her voice."Didn't you say everything was foolproof?"Why is it me in the footage now?"As she spoke, she kept hitting his shoulder in frustration."Can you stop it already? If you hadn't been so stupid and let her pull out that hair, none of this would've happened!" Wesley shouted back, shoving her aside. In that instant, every officer understood. They moved in and cuffed both of them.Edmund turned to me, curiosity and disbelief in his eyes."How did you know all this?"I swallowed before answering. "Wesley has been controlling everything with some kind of spell. He thoug

Edmund turned, his gaze sharp as it landed on Wesley and Lily.He narrowed his eyes. "Wesley, you just said Nevaeh can't have children. Is that right?"Under his stare, Wesley grew visibly nervous. His leg kept shaking, and he avoided eye contact."Answer me."In the end, he clenched his teeth. "Yes. I said that. She can't have children."Lily quickly jumped in, her tone almost impatient."Officer, what is there to question?"A week ago, Wesley took her to the hospital for a checkup."It's all written clearly in black and white."She lifted her chin slightly, a hint of disdain in her voice, as if she had nothing left to hide.Edmund let out a short, mocking laugh and unfolded the paper in his hand.It was my medical report, the one I had just received the previous day."I was there when Nevaeh had this examination done."I also saw the results when they came out. Everything is normal. There is no issue with her fertility."A small smile touched my lips. I was so glad I ha

The moment everyone's attention slipped, I moved. I spun around and grabbed a fistful of Lily's hair, yanking it hard. She cried out in pain, her face twisting. "What are you doing?!"The scene instantly fell into chaos. The police rushed in and forced me to the ground. The hair I had just torn from Lily's head was tossed aside carelessly."Nevaeh, calm down!"After restraining me, the officers quickly turned to check on Lily. However, something was wrong. Neither she nor Wesley had reacted normally. Their faces had gone gray, their bodies trembling uncontrollably.Edmund noticed it, too. Without hesitation, he ordered all three of us taken back to the station."Nevaeh, tell me. Why did you do that?"Edmund slammed the hair I had pulled onto the table, clearly angry. My gaze followed it. "Because that hair…is mine."The room fell silent.Edmund frowned. "What did you just say?"I closed my eyes briefly, then spoke again. "Lily is wearing hair extensions."And all of it…bel

Edmund's reasoning made sense, but the police were not that easy to convince. An officer handed over the dashcam footage. "Edmund, this clearly records Nevaeh committing the crime."There are no signs of tampering. Take a look."Edmund shot me a doubtful glance, then turned to the screen. His face went pale. "How is this possible?"Lily let out a sharp laugh, unable to hide her sarcasm. "Why wouldn't it be her?"She reported it to you, then went and killed them. Isn't that just so you'd unknowingly provide her with a fake alibi?"And before you got here, her supervisor was already helping her cover it up."What does that make you?"She even rolled her eyes at the end.Edmund's expression darkened as he looked at me. "Can you explain this?"I lowered my head and stared at the phone in his hand.It was not time yet. I just needed to stall a little longer.Slowly, I looked up at him, my expression calm and innocent."It wasn't me.""Enough, Nevaeh! In the face of all this e

The firm, commanding voice had barely faded when a higher-ranking officer walked in.Edmund Rogers.Almost the moment he appeared, the so-called family members in the crowd were all subdued and taken away. Not just them. Even the officer standing beside me froze in shock."Edmund… Why are you here?"Edmund let out a dry chuckle, then shifted his gaze toward me. He lifted a hand and pointed lightly. "I'm here today thanks to Ms. Charlton's tip."The moment he said that, every eye turned to me.The people pinned to the ground glared at me with pure hatred."You're working with the police! I'm reporting all of you!""What kind of law enforcement is this? The victims are being arrested while the real criminal walks free?""Is there even such a thing as justice anymore? You people have no humanity!""Why are you arresting us? Nevaeh was the one who killed them!"At that, Edmund frowned and looked at me. "You killed someone?"I shook my head quickly. "No. I didn't kill anyone."

The moment those words fell, the crowd exploded again."You're still trying to talk your way out of this? Dream on!""Yeah, if it wasn't you, then why is your face in the dashcam footage?""Unbelievable. You killed someone and still calmly headed to the airport as if nothing had happened!"I slowly scanned the crowd, then caught sight of Wesley and Lily not far away, watching me with open mockery in their eyes.If they could swap my face into that footage without leaving a trace, then changing my flight records would be just as easy.I had expected that. That was why, the day before our anniversary, I had asked Joseph to go and sign the contract with me. A witness was always the strongest proof. After hesitating for a while, the police finally made a video call to Joseph. The moment the call connected, he looked completely shocked by the scene in front of me."Nevaeh, aren't we supposed to finalize the contract this afternoon? Where are you?"I did not have time to explain.
