Selene's first morning at Laurent Group started before the sun fully cleared the skyline, her heels clicking across marble at a pace that matched the rhythm already drumming in her chest. She reached her desk twenty minutes early, only to find the executive floor already humming — assistants moving with quiet urgency, phones lit up in a steady chorus, the particular electricity of a company that never really slept.

By ten o'clock she'd reorganized the CEO's calendar into something that actually made sense, flagged three scheduling conflicts nobody else had caught, and fielded a call from a vendor in Singapore in flawless, and unhurried composure.

"You've been here three hours," the department head said, pausing at her desk with something between admiration and suspicion. "How did you already fix the Kessler account mess?"

"It wasn't a mess," Selene said, not looking up from her screen. "It was disorganized. There's a difference."

By noon, word had already made its way around the floor that the new assistant wasn't just competent — she was formidable.

---

Across the city, Tristan sat behind his desk at Wolfe Corporation, scrolling through a report his secretary had just handed him, when the name caught his eye halfway down the page.

*Selene Whitmore — newly appointed Executive Assistant at Laurent Group.*

He read it twice before the laugh escaped him, short and disbelieving, leaning back in his chair like the universe had just handed him a joke too absurd to take seriously.

"My rival hired my ex-wife?" He shook his head, tapping his pen against the desk. "That's almost funny."

"There's more, sir." His secretary hovered near the door, folder pressed to her chest. "She's confirmed to attend tomorrow's joint investment conference. Alongside Mr. Laurent."

The pen stopped moving.

Tristan's gaze lifted slowly from the report, something shifting behind his eyes that hadn't been there a second ago. "Alongside him. As in—"

"As his assistant, sir. She'll be present at the negotiations."

Tristan said nothing for a long moment, the easy amusement draining out of his expression like water through a cracked glass. He set the pen down with more precision than the motion required.

"Cancel my afternoon," he said finally.

"Sir?"

"I said cancel it." His voice had gone flat, and controlled, the tone of a man recalculating something he thought he'd already settled. He turned towards the window, the city stretching gray and gleaming below him, and said nothing else.

---

By early evening, the Laurent Group offices had begun to empty out, the frantic hum of the day settling into the quieter rhythm of overtime and closing tasks. Selene sat at her desk finalizing the notes for tomorrow's conference when the elevator chimed at the far end of the floor.

She didn't look up right away. Footsteps — small, and quick, unmistakably a child's — echoed against the marble, followed by the low, patient voice of a nanny trying to keep pace.

"Rosie, wait for—"

The name registered a half second too late.

A small shape came barreling around the corner of the reception desk, lavender coat flying open, twin braids bouncing with the force of her sprint. Rosie's eyes locked onto Selene's face from thirty feet away and her entire body lit up like someone had struck a match behind her ribs.

"Pretty miss!"

Selene barely had time to push back from her desk before Rosie collided into her, small arms wrapping around her waist with the same fierce, unshakable grip from that first night outside the hotel. Selene's hands hovered a moment before settling against the girl's back, some instinct older than memory taking over without permission.

"Rosie." Zayden's voice arrived a beat later, edged with something Selene had never heard from him before — not quite alarm, but close.

He rounded the corner and stopped hard in the middle of the floor.

The entire office had gone still. Assistants froze mid-task. A junior associate stood halfway between the copier and his desk, a folder forgotten in his hand. Even the low background hum of ringing phones seemed to fade into the periphery.

Zayden stared at his daughter wrapped around his executive assistant like she'd found something she'd been searching the entire city for.

"Rosie," he said again, quieter this time, "let go of Miss Whitmore."

"No." Rosie tightened her grip, cheek pressed against Selene's blazer, utterly unbothered by the audience assembled around her. "I found her, Daddy."

"You didn't find her. She works here."

Rosie pulled back just enough to look up at Selene's face, studying her with the same unfiltered wonder from their first meeting, like she was confirming something she already knew to be true.

"Is it really you?" she whispered.

"It's really me," Selene said, and something in her chest ached at the sheer, uncomplicated joy blooming across the girl's face.

Rosie spun toward her father, practically vibrating, one small hand pointing at Selene like she'd just unveiled a magic trick.

"Daddy," she said, loud enough that every remaining person on the floor heard it clearly, "I found Mommy."

The silence that followed had weight to it, pressing against the room from every direction. Zayden's composed mask cracked for exactly one second — eyes wide, jaw loosening, a man caught entirely off guard for perhaps the first time in his professional life.

Selene felt heat crawl up her neck, actually aware of every pair of eyes now fixed on her, on Rosie's arms still locked around her waist, on the impossible, ridiculous, devastating sentence hanging in the air between them.

"Rosie," Zayden said, and this time his voice came out rough, scraped raw at the edges, "that's not—"

"But I want her to be," Rosie said simply, undeterred, tucking her face back against Selene's side like the matter had already been settled in whatever court children held inside their hearts.

Selene met Zayden's eyes over the top of his daughter's head, and for one long, suspended moment, neither of them said anything at all.

The next morning, Zayden and Selene sat across from the lawyer handling the investigation into Selene’s missing medical records. A thick folder rested on the table between them. Selene stared at it, her fingers tightly wrapped around the warm cup of coffee in front of her—she had barely touched it. The words from the previous night were still fresh in her mind: one of her medical documents had not simply disappeared. Someone had removed it. And now, for the first time, they were going to find out who. The lawyer, Mr. Anderson, opened the folder and adjusted his glasses. “We managed to trace the activity surrounding your records,” he said. Zayden leaned back slightly, his expression hardening. “And?” Mr. Anderson took out several printed documents. “Someone accessed your medical file shortly after your miscarriage.” Selene’s fingers stopped moving. “Shortly after?” “Yes.” Her stomach tightened. “Who?” “That is where things become complicated.” Mr. Anderson placed another

Selene woke before her alarm. For several seconds she stared at the ceiling, still caught somewhere between sleep and memory. Then it came back: the study, Zayden’s hand against her cheek, his lips on hers, the warmth of his arm around her waist, her fingers gripping his shirt as though letting go had never been an option. Selene’s cheeks grew warm. She turned onto her side and pulled the blanket over her face. “Oh, God.” She had kissed her husband—not because of the contract, not because Rosie needed a mother, not because she was trying to forget Tristan. She had wanted to kiss him. That was the part she could no longer run from. For weeks she’d told herself that the strange flutter in her chest whenever Zayden looked at her was gratitude, that the comfort she felt around him came from finally being treated with kindness. But gratitude didn’t make her heart race when he walked into a room. Comfort didn’t make her want to stay in his arms. And it certainly didn’t make her wish tha

For several seconds, neither Selene nor Zayden moved.Rosie's words hung between them, innocent and completely unfiltered."You're really in love!"Selene felt heat rush into her cheeks. She slowly pulled her hand from Zayden's.Rosie immediately noticed."Why did you let go?""Rosie," Zayden said, his voice carrying the quiet warning of a father who was already regretting every word his daughter had said. The little girl only grinned."But you like Mommy."Selene covered her face with one hand.Zayden sighed."Go finish your breakfast.""Are you going to hold hands again?""Rosie."She giggled before running back towards the dining room.Selene waited until her footsteps disappeared before looking at Zayden.Neither spoke. Then she laughed softly."I don't think I've ever seen you this speechless.""I've handled hostile board meetings with less difficulty."That made her laugh again. The tension eased, but something remained beneath it.Something neither of them could pretend wasn't

Zayden barely slept. The ring remained in his possession throughout breakfast, the cool metal turning slowly between his fingers whenever his thoughts became too loud. He had told himself not to make assumptions; yet, seeing Selene's wedding ring lying alone on the table that morning had unsettled him more than he wanted to admit. Maybe she had changed her mind, or maybe what he had said the night before had frightened her. He had been careful not to pressure her, but perhaps even admitting that he wanted more had been enough to make her reconsider everything—the thought sat heavily in his chest. When Selene finally walked into the dining room, Zayden looked up, watching as she smiled at him. “Good morning.”“Morning.” His response was polite—altogether too polite—and Selene noticed immediately. She slowed beside the table, studying him carefully. “What's wrong?”“Nothing.” He placed his coffee down with a measured motion.Selene pulled out the chair across from him. “You've said abou

The car was quiet, while outside, New York continued moving around them—headlights passing through the windshield in brief flashes before disappearing into the darkness. Zayden remained turned towards Selene, one hand resting loosely on the steering wheel while the other lay flat against his thigh. He had been silent for long enough that Selene's heartbeat had started to match the steady rhythm of the ticking indicator on the dashboard."What is it?" she asked again, her voice softer this time.Zayden looked at her for a long moment. "When we agreed to this marriage, it was supposed to be simple."Selene swallowed, knowing exactly what he meant."One year," he continued, his tone smooth yet deliberate. "Clear boundaries; no expectations." His voice remained calm, but there was something altogether different beneath it tonight—something far less controlled. "We both knew what we were agreeing to."Selene nodded slowly. "Yes.""And I was comfortable with that."She watched his face care

Bianca couldn't shake the woman's question. She sat alone in her office long after most of the employees had gone home, staring at the phone in her hand. What do Selene's biological parents have to do with the hospital? The question had been simple — the woman's refusal to answer had made it terrifying.Bianca's thumb hovered over the contact before she pressed call again. The woman answered on the fourth ring."Why are Selene's biological parents connected to the hospital?" Bianca asked immediately.Silence."You called me about the records," Bianca continued, her voice tightening. "You said something about her parents. I need to know what you meant.""I can't discuss this with you."Bianca's jaw clenched. "You've already told me enough to make me suspicious.""I told you nothing that concerns you.""Then why mention her parents?"Another pause."Forget what I said."The call ended. Bianca stared at the screen, her reflection looking back at her from the black glass — pale, tense, ey
