MasukJenn’s POV
Wade never returned to the bedroom all through that night. I stayed up the whole night, waiting for him. Frustrated and disappointed, I finally resigned myself to the jaws of a restless sleep. I’d been attacked in our territory by a wolf that wasn’t from here. I could have died, but he didn’t care enough to check on me. When I woke up, I realized I was still alone in bed. Glancing up at the clock on the wall, my heart sank. It was almost nine in the morning and there was no sign of the man that promised his heart and life to me. A painful realization dawned on me at that moment; Our union was over. Maybe it wasn’t there yet, but it was on its way there. Anger and disappointment enveloped me as I realized that I was slowly losing my husband to another woman. His fated mate. How could I even contest that? When I arrived in the kitchen that morning, the familiar chaos greeted me, so did the Omega staff and Alice, our head chef and one of my oldest friends. Her expression was a mix of concern and curiosity. By now, I was sure rumors of what was happening between me and Wade had circulated around the pack so I wasn’t the least bit surprised by the look of pity she was giving me. “Jenn! You are up so early! I expected you to be resting. You had a rough day yesterday.” I forced a smile, still feeling the sting of Wade's betrayal. Alice approached me with a kind smile, hugging me from behind. Alice and I were more than friends. She knew more about me than even I knew about myself. We grew up together and when my parents died, her father took me in. Basically, we were foster sisters, but I barely see her these days since she’s so busy with her work as a chef, traveling different packs and making a name for herself, while I on the other hand… “You know you can always talk to me, right?” she said, grabbing my shoulders and turning me around to face her. “I can talk to Wade if you want. I know you never liked me meddling in your relationship with him, but don’t you think it’s time I –” “Alice!’ I called out softly, but firmly and she immediately understood that my relationship with Wade wasn’t a topic I wanted to speak about. At least, not now. When the wound in my heart was still raw and bleeding. “Fine!” she responded with a pout. “But just know that I won’t seek your permission next time he breaks your heart like this. Also, I have something I want to talk to you about.” I raised a brow. “If it’s about Wade and Morgan –” “It’s not about them,” she said, cutting me off. “I promise. There’s an opportunity for you to improve and take your skills as a healer to the next level. I’ve been holding it down for you and if you do choose to take it, you’ll be studying for three years.” Three years! That was going to be a long time to be away, especially with what was happening in the pack. But the idea tugged at something deep inside me. This was a chance to step out of Wade’s shadow and prove myself as a healer, just like my best friend was doing. I’d always relied on his support, and as much as I loved him, I also wanted to know what it felt like to succeed and earn respect because of my hard work, and not because of my title as his Luna. Alice must have noticed my hesitance, because she placed a hand on my shoulder. “Take your time to think about it. If you want to discuss it with Wade, then that’s your choice to make also. This is a life changing experience, and I’d hate for you to miss it.” Patting me on the back, she returned to what she was doing before I walked in, leaving me to my racing thoughts. I tried to weigh the odds. If I took the opportunity, what would happen to our union? Would it survive the distance now that his fated mate was here? I didn’t need to think about that question too much because I already knew the answer to it. The thought of the opportunity and leaving filled my head even as I tried to busy myself with preparing for the ball that was taking place this evening. When I finally returned to my bedroom to dress up, I found a pink box on the side table together with a flower bouquet. Surprise and excitement rose in my heart as I thought the gift was once again from the same anonymous person who sent me the dress yesterday. But to my surprise and chagrin, the simple card with the words ‘sorry’ scrawled roughly on it filled my heart with a disappointment that even I didn’t understand. “Huh,” I bit my lip, picking up the pink box from the bed. Inside it was a probably crazy expensive diamond necklace and ruby earrings. Was this supposed to be a token of apology or something? I glanced at the door, wondering when he brought it in and why he didn’t wait to see me himself and tell me the apology to my face. But I couldn't think about all of that now, I had a ball to attend. I freshened up quickly and put on the dress my anonymous person gifted me, pairing it with Wade’s gift of necklace and earring. When I finally stepped outside, Beta Simon was waiting at the bottom of the stairs in a black tux. Not my husband. Stepping up, he offered me a hand which I accepted reluctantly. “Nice dress,” he complimented me with a smile which I returned with one of my own. “Thank you,” I glanced around. “And Wade? Where is he?” Simon pointed at the limousine he was leading me to. “He’s in there with Morgan waiting for you.” Opening the car door, he helped me inside, holding the train of my dress and placing it gently by my feet. As Simon said, Wade and Morgan were indeed in the car and they sat way too close for my own comfort. Morgan smiled as she saw me and then her shrill voice killed what was left of the light in my heart. “Do you realize how long we’ve been waiting here for you?”she said. I used a moment to stop and wonder why she was being so loud. “You don’t show a good example as Wade’s Luna and partner.” I sneered. “And you do? I mean, you look very healthy for someone who collapsed a dozen times just yesterday.” At that, Wade sat up. “Jenn,” he said firmly. “There’s no need for that. I already explained to you, Morgan has had a rough life and it affected her wolf. She isn’t as strong as you and me.” Morgan smiled brightly as her eyes met mine. Ignoring them both, I turned to the fully stocked bar and poured myself a bottle of champagne. If I was going to be riding with these two, then a headache was on the way. The rest of their conversation faded into background noise as my mind raced. After not seeing me since I left the infirmary and knowing what I went through yesterday, this was all I could get from the man who I married. A scolding. My heart sank to the pit of my stomach. Slowly, doubts about our union began to creep in. I had no idea who this man was. He was not the man I married but a version I never thought existed.Jenn’s POV The days after the battle passed in a haze of exhaustion and joy and grief. We buried Vicktor on a hill overlooking the northern border of his territory, beneath a stone carved with the names of his mate and daughter. His soldiers stood in silent rows as the sun set behind the mountains, and I spoke the words he’d asked me to speak: He died well. For Ilara. For Liana. The Northern King had finally found his peace. The Mad Alpha was taken to the deepest cell beneath the estate, where he would spend the rest of his life alone with the knowledge that his children had chosen me. Osiris visited him once – just once – and came back with nothing to say. Morgan didn’t visit at all. “She doesn’t need to,” Tristan said when I asked. They were standing together at the edge of the courtyard, their son cradled between them, a small family finally whole. “She’s already said everything she needed to say to him. She’s done.” Alice came to see the baby the morning after the birth. She’
Jenn’s POV I was on my knees beside him before I understood I’d moved. My hands pressed against the wound, and I pushed every ounce of power I had into him – the dark wolf howling, Liam’s strength flooding through the bond, everything I had. But the poisoned light drank it all. “Vicktor –” He smiled. The hard lines of his face softened, the weight he’d been carrying for twenty years lifting all at once. “He’s dead. Grant is dead.” His hand found mine. His grip was still strong, even now. “Tell my people I died well.” “You’re not dying –” “I am.” His eyes drifted closed. “Your father would be proud of you, Jenn. And I can finally join them there. My family… they’re waiting for me.” His eyes finally closed and his hand went slack in mine. I knelt there in the blood, my hands still pressed against his wound, and I couldn’t move. Couldn’t speak. Could only stare at his face – at the peace that had finally settled over his features. Liam’s hand found my shoulder. He didn’t try to pu
Jenn’s POV “You know,” I said, “I used to be afraid of you.” His lip curled. “You should still be afraid of me, little Alpha.” “No.” I stepped forward. The dark wolf pressed so close to the surface that my voice came out layered and strange, echoing against the ancient stone. “I was afraid of you when I didn’t know what I was. When I thought you were the monster under my bed, the reason my parents died, the shadow that would hunt me forever.” My boots scuffed against the stone as I halted at the base of the platform. The heirloom’s light washed over my face, cold as a dead hand against my skin. “But you’re not a monster. You’re just a man who spent his whole life chasing power that was never his to hold.” His hands shook harder. The heirloom’s pulse quickened, the colors swirling faster. “I held this realm in my fist for decades –” “You held nothing.” I tilted my head. “You killed my parents because you couldn’t have what you wanted. You sent your daughter into my husband’s bed
Jenn’s POV Liam’s hand found the small of my back as he appeared at my side. The mate bond hummed between us, and where I’d felt his fear coiled tight the night before, there was only stillness now. I didn’t say anything. I reached back and pressed my palm against his chest, right over his heart, and felt the steady thump of it against my fingers. Vicktor caught my eye from across the space. His fingers drummed once against the desk before he pushed himself to his feet. Behind him, Osiris stood apart from the others, his dark eyes fixed on the mountains. He’d been silent since the council ended. The dark wolf uncoiled beneath my ribs, a slow stretch of heat. “I guess it’s time to end this.” The convoy rolled out as the first pale light of dawn bled over the mountains. I rode in the lead vehicle with Liam at the wheel and Vicktor in the seat behind us, his blade across his knees. Behind us, the Fox soldiers followed in tight formation, their green and silver armor catching the mo
Jenn’s POV I swallowed the burning ache in my throat. “Nothing will happen to me.” I said with a confidence I didn’t feel. “I promise.” Alice pulled me into a hug then, and her arms wrapped around me with a fierce, desperate strength that reminded me of every time she had held me as a child after my parents died. I buried my face in her shoulder and breathed in the scent of her. When I finally pulled back, her cheeks were wet but her jaw was set. “I love you,” I whispered. “I love you too.” She cupped my face in both hands – the same gesture Liam used, I realized suddenly, the same tenderness – and her thumbs brushed the tears from my cheeks. “Now go. End this. And come back to me.” The estate was quiet when I finally made my way back to our quarters. The moon hung heavy in the sky, nearly full, and its pale light spilled through the window and pooled silver on the bed where Liam was waiting for me. He'd shed his jacket and kicked off his boots by the door. He was sitting on th
Jenn’s POV I didn't see Morgan arrive so much as feel her – a sudden, sharp tug of emotion that rippled through the courtyard like a stone dropped into still water. A strangled sound escaped her throat, and when I turned, the tears were already streaming down her cheeks in waves. Someone had taken the baby from her arms. A wise decision, as it turned out, because it gave her enough space to wring her hands together as she bit down on her bottom lip until I was certain it would bruise. “T – Tristan...” Her voice came out as a choked sob, barely recognizable. Tristan crossed the threshold in four long strides and engulfed her in his arms, pulling her against his chest with a desperation that spoke of months of separation and the kind of fear that only faded when you could finally touch the person you'd been terrified of losing. Morgan's fingers clutched at the torn fabric of his shirt, her shoulders shaking with the force of her sobs, and he held her like she was the only solid th
Jenn’s POV I slowly peeled my eyes open, blinking a few times as I tried to adjust to the unfamiliar surroundings. For a few seconds, disoriented and confused, I thought maybe Liam had taken me back to his estate. Maybe it was a surprise and he’d prepared a new room for me. Then the door opened,
Liam’s POV I was following the scent of the Mad Alpha, wishing for nothing more than tearing his head off with my bare hands. This would solve most of my problems, as the sly bastard was the brain behind everything. Eliminating him would be crucial for victory. But I knew that was far-reaching.
Jenn’s POV Asking the mad Alpha to tell us why we were here was a stretch, I knew that. But I didn’t know what else to do and we needed to buy time while our people located Morgan. If she was even here like her father hinted. He could be trucking us for all we knew and we could be falling right i
Wade’s POV I was early! Of course I was early. I’d been standing here for twenty minutes, watching the road, watching the trees, watching for any sign of them. When the headlights finally appeared, my heart did something stupid – it lurched, then raced. The vehicles pulled up, and I watched them
