Wade never returned to the bedroom all through that night. I stayed up the whole night, waiting for him. Frustrated and disappointed, I finally resigned myself to the jaws of a restless sleep. I’d been attacked in our territory by a wolf that wasn’t from here. I could have died, but he didn’t care enough to check on me. When I woke up, I realized I was still alone in bed. Glancing up at the clock on the wall, my heart sank. It was almost nine in the morning and there was no sign of the man that promised his heart and life to me. A painful realization dawned on me at that moment; Our union was over. Maybe it wasn’t there yet, but it was on its way there. Anger and disappointment enveloped me as I realized that I was slowly losing my husband to another woman. His fated mate. How could I even contest that? When I arrived in the kitchen that morning, the familiar chaos greeted me, so did the Omega staff and Alice, our head chef and one of my oldest friends. Her expression was a mix of concern and curiosity. By now, I was sure rumors of what was happening between me and Wade had circulated around the pack so I wasn’t the least bit surprised by the look of pity she was giving me. “Jenn! You are up so early! I expected you to be resting. You had a rough day yesterday.” I forced a smile, still feeling the sting of Wade's betrayal. Alice approached me with a kind smile, hugging me from behind. Alice and I were more than friends. She knew more about me than even I knew about myself. We grew up together and when my parents died, her father took me in. Basically, we were foster sisters, but I barely see her these days since she’s so busy with her work as a chef, traveling different packs and making a name for herself, while I on the other hand… “You know you can always talk to me, right?” she said, grabbing my shoulders and turning me around to face her. “I can talk to Wade if you want. I know you never liked me meddling in your relationship with him, but don’t you think it’s time I –” “Alice!’ I called out softly, but firmly and she immediately understood that my relationship with Wade wasn’t a topic I wanted to speak about. At least, not now. When the wound in my heart was still raw and bleeding. “Fine!” she responded with a pout. “But just know that I won’t seek your permission next time he breaks your heart like this. Also, I have something I want to talk to you about.” I raised a brow. “If it’s about Wade and Morgan –” “It’s not about them,” she said, cutting me off. “I promise. There’s an opportunity for you to improve and take your skills as a healer to the next level. I’ve been holding it down for you and if you do choose to take it, you’ll be studying for three years.” Three years! That was going to be a long time to be away, especially with what was happening in the pack. But the idea tugged at something deep inside me. This was a chance to step out of Wade’s shadow and prove myself as a healer, just like my best friend was doing. I’d always relied on his support, and as much as I loved him, I also wanted to know what it felt like to succeed and earn respect because of my hard work, and not because of my title as his Luna. Alice must have noticed my hesitance, because she placed a hand on my shoulder. “Take your time to think about it. If you want to discuss it with Wade, then that’s your choice to make also. This is a life changing experience, and I’d hate for you to miss it.” Patting me on the back, she returned to what she was doing before I walked in, leaving me to my racing thoughts. I tried to weigh the odds. If I took the opportunity, what would happen to our union? Would it survive the distance now that his fated mate was here? I didn’t need to think about that question too much because I already knew the answer to it. The thought of the opportunity and leaving filled my head even as I tried to busy myself with preparing for the ball that was taking place this evening. When I finally returned to my bedroom to dress up, I found a pink box on the side table together with a flower bouquet. Surprise and excitement rose in my heart as I thought the gift was once again from the same anonymous person who sent me the dress yesterday. But to my surprise and chagrin, the simple card with the words ‘sorry’ scrawled roughly on it filled my heart with a disappointment that even I didn’t understand. “Huh,” I bit my lip, picking up the pink box from the bed. Inside it was a probably crazy expensive diamond necklace and ruby earrings. Was this supposed to be a token of apology or something? I glanced at the door, wondering when he brought it in and why he didn’t wait to see me himself and tell me the apology to my face. But I couldn't think about all of that now, I had a ball to attend. I freshened up quickly and put on the dress my anonymous person gifted me, pairing it with Wade’s gift of necklace and earring. When I finally stepped outside, Beta Simon was waiting at the bottom of the stairs in a black tux. Not my husband. Stepping up, he offered me a hand which I accepted reluctantly. “Nice dress,” he complimented me with a smile which I returned with one of my own. “Thank you,” I glanced around. “And Wade? Where is he?” Simon pointed at the limousine he was leading me to. “He’s in there with Morgan waiting for you.” Opening the car door, he helped me inside, holding the train of my dress and placing it gently by my feet. As Simon said, Wade and Morgan were indeed in the car and they sat way too close for my own comfort. Morgan smiled as she saw me and then her shrill voice killed what was left of the light in my heart. “Do you realize how long we’ve been waiting here for you?”she said. I used a moment to stop and wonder why she was being so loud. “You don’t show a good example as Wade’s Luna and partner.” I sneered. “And you do? I mean, you look very healthy for someone who collapsed a dozen times just yesterday.” At that, Wade sat up. “Jenn,” he said firmly. “There’s no need for that. I already explained to you, Morgan has had a rough life and it affected her wolf. She isn’t as strong as you and me.” Morgan smiled brightly as her eyes met mine. Ignoring them both, I turned to the fully stocked bar and poured myself a bottle of champagne. If I was going to be riding with these two, then a headache was on the way. The rest of their conversation faded into background noise as my mind raced. After not seeing me since I left the infirmary and knowing what I went through yesterday, this was all I could get from the man who I married. A scolding. My heart sank to the pit of my stomach. Slowly, doubts about our union began to creep in. I had no idea who this man was. He was not the man I married but a version I never thought existed.Jenn’s POV I didn’t sleep. The bed was soft and the room was quiet and Liam’s arm was warm around my waist, but every time I closed my eyes, I saw Alice’s face through that glass – her dark eyes wide and terrified, her hands pressed against the cold surface, her voice cracking on my name. “Jenn, please. I’m your sister.” I must have drifted off at some point, because I woke to pale morning light filtering through the curtains and Liam’s side of the bed was already empty. He’d left a note on the pillow beside me, written in his sharp, precise handwriting. “Gone to coordinate with Luke. Alva will take you to Alice when you’re ready. Come find me after. – love, L” I traced the letters with my thumb, letting his steady presence ground me even in his absence. Then I pushed myself up, ignoring the ache in my back and the protest from every muscle in my exhausted body. I’d told Alice I would come back. I wasn’t going to make her wait any longer than necessary. Alva was already outs
Jenn’s POV Mark started clicking away at his keyboard and spoke without bothering to look away from the screen. I didn’t know much about the man, but one thing was certain: he was deeply invested in this case. And I had no idea why. “Clearly, we need to figure out what they were holding over her,” he said, still keeping his eyes on the screen. I glanced up as he spoke, my brows scrunching up. “…and not just because the fucking operative needs to die for involving your sister in it. Alice was a huge asset to your pack, both personally and strategically, but there’s a lot of other people living inside these walls. If the mad Alpha has leverage over Alice, he could have leverage over others.” He turned to Luke. “Did you know that Vicktor’s head of security has a sister in the Eastern territories? If Selene gets to her, then we’re fucked. Not to mention the Vale Pack elders and their families. Oh, and then, I don’t know, your entire inner circle. If someone got the jump on you thro
Jenn’s POV Liam caught my face in his hands and tilted my head back until he was staring into my eyes. Whatever he saw there – the exhaustion, the grief, the thousand tiny fractures I was barely holding together – made his mouth harden even more. He leaned forward just a little, his body shielding us both from everyone else’s view as he murmured to me quietly, “Go home and get some rest. I’ll take care of this. Stay with Alva and just leave it to me to handle.” “Jenn?” Alice’s voice came from behind me, trembling a little. Even though it hurt me, I finally turned to look at her through the glass of the holding cell. She was standing now, her hands pressed against the cold surface, her dark eyes wide and terrified. She looked broken. The words tumbled out of me as I pressed my own palm against the glass, mirroring hers. “I’ll be back, Alice. Just… just tell them everything. Whatever they’re holding over you, whatever Selene has on you, we’ll figure it out. We’ll figure it out toge
Jenn’s POV I was halfway to the new bedroom Vicktor assigned to Morgan when I saw Mira running toward me. Her white coat flapped behind her and her dark hair came loose from its bun and her face – when she got close enough for me to see it – was tight with something that looked a lot like panic. I stopped, my own face scrunching up in confusion. Panic welled up inside me as she neared, my heart dropped into my stomach. “Alpha Jenn.” She skidded to a stop in front of me, her chest heaving. “It’s Morgan. She’s gone into early labor. We’ve moved her to the infirmary. The head matron is with her now, but I thought you should know –” “I’m coming.” The words were out before she could finish. I was already moving, my hand pressed against my own protruding stomach “How far apart are the contractions?” I asked as Mira fell in step beside me. “Three minutes. She’s progressing faster than we expected.” Faster than we expected. Which meant complications. Which meant danger. Which meant Mor
Jenn’s POV I was brushing my teeth when Liam’s voice cut through my bond we shared. “Luke’s back. Can you meet me in Vicktor’s study?” His tone – clipped and urgent, stripped of his usual warmth – sent a chill down my spine. I rinsed my mouth, threw on a sweater, and hurried through the darkened hallways of Vicktor’s estate. The halls were quiet at this hour, most of the household already retired for the night. Alice had gone to her guest room an hour ago, pleading exhaustion from the journey. Alva had followed shortly after, shooting me a look that said we’ll talk tomorrow. I’d been grateful for the reprieve. Grateful to stop performing, to stop smiling, to stop pretending my sister wasn’t a traitor. Now, as I pushed open the door to Vicktor’s study, I found Liam standing behind the desk, his jaw tight and his blue eyes hard. Luke sat in one of the chairs across from him, still in his Tacgear, his face pale and streaked with dirt. His hands were clasped between his knees, and
Jenn’s POV My chest was on fire. My lungs were screaming for air and my heart was thumping inside my rib cage at a frenzied pace, but I couldn’t force any semblance of calm into myself as I sat across from Alice, her warm brown eyes crinkling with laughter at something Alva had said before she’d been pulled away. I couldn’t look at my sister right now – not really look at her – not with the image of her red-rimmed eyes and trembling voice still burning into my brain. The footage Liam had shown me played on a loop behind my eyelids every time I blinked. “Jenn still hasn’t returned to the pack territory. She’s still at Vicktor’s estate. The pregnancy is progressing – she mentioned she only has a few weeks left before delivery.” Her voice had cracked. She’d pressed a hand to her mouth, her shoulders shaking. And then she’d given them everything. Alice reached over and squeezed my hand, her fingers warm and familiar. “You’re quiet all of a sudden. Is everything okay?” I forced a smi
Jenn’s POVAs soon as the door shut, I let out an audible sigh of relief. I walked over to the couch and collapsed onto it, burying my face in my palms. This was finally happening. I wasn’t even surprised that he gave in so easily. Soon I’ll be truly divorced from Wade and our bond will be permanen
Wade’s POV The days that followed were full of thoughts I couldn’t shake. The meeting with the Alpha King didn’t go well – not that I had any expectations from the same man who was encouraging my wife to sever our bond and divorce me. But, I hated that he was right about one thing: I didn’t love
Wade’s POV The look I saw in her eyes resembled that of men who have been pushed beyond their limits. She looked like she’d gone mad and that insanity was tearing her from the seams. For a minute, I felt a slight tug of guilt in my chest, but it was gone as soon as I remembered that she was soon g
Jenn’s POV The tears gushed out of me like a fountain. I was happy Alva wasn’t anywhere around or she’d definitely misunderstood, and I didn’t think I had enough words to explain to her the joy I felt in that moment. My heart thumped loudly in my ears as I reached inside again. “Athena?” I thoug
