CHAPTER 49

JORDAN

“Could you maybe not try to trip me over?” I asked Jojo, her eyes on mine as she kneaded the floor.

“I could step on you,you know?” I added, but all I got was a tiny meow before she whirled around and walked away, with her tail high.

I let out a sigh as I turned my attention back to prepping the ribeye, glancing at my watch intermittently as I boiled and mashed the potatoes.

It was six minutes past five pm,when I finished everything.

Maze had left work at exactly two pm,and although I'd offered to go with her, she'd refused…insisting I attend the meeting I'd been procrastinating for weeks.

I'd driven to the hospital after, but Collins told me she'd left almost one hour before.

Then I'd come home, but it turned out she wasn't at home either.

I cut a piece of the steak, while it was still in the pan,and forked it into my mouth, chewing absently even though the piece was delicious.

Then I cut a generous slab, cutting them further into pieces before

CHAPTER 48 MAZE “Maze…Maze…”It was the pretty woman from my dreams. Her eyes gleamed unnaturally as she pulled me into a hug, holding me tightly.“You did it,” she whispered, pulling away from the hug. “You found your light…”She held my hands,a bit tighter than needed. “You must keep it now,do everything you can…”“Mother…I'm…” My throat suddenly felt weird, like something was lodged in it. And try as I could to swallow it,it wouldn't go down.My mother grinned, then cupped my cheek, the band of her amethyst ring, cool against my suddenly heated skin.“You must go now…”Again,I tried to speak but instead gagged–I gagged so hard,it pulled into consciousness, just as I felt the cold towel on my temple.“Maze,” Jordan called as he rushed from the bathroom, just as my stomach lurched again.I quickly bolted from the bed as vomit filled my mouth, making it to the toilet just in time to lose my dinner.“You're alright, darling…” Jordan cooed behind me as he held my hair

CHAPTER 47 JORDAN I rolled my lips to keep my smile in check as I held onto the doorhandle, listening to the sound of Maze's heels as she entered her space, and made straight for mine.“Hey lady…” I muttered softly as I drew the door open right as she walked in,her eyes sparkling with mischief.“Hey.”“…I thought you'd go back home?”She bit her lip, bouncing on her heels, with her hands behind her.“I didn't wanna.”The slight movement of her arm drew my eyes down, and for the first time I caught a glimpse of the white box.“What's that?” Maze shrugged, still worrying her bottom lip. “I got you a little early birthday gift.”“My birthday isn't until November…”“Which,” she breezed past me,into the office as, “is in two months.”I shut the door, turning to her as my eyes gravitated down to the box.“Okay, fine…what's in there?”“Take a guess.”I threw my hands up as I shrugged. “I suck at guesses…”“Well that's too bad,” Maze murmured, her head slightly ti

CHAPTER 46MAZE “All good?” Tania asked as I walked back into her office after I ended the call with Jordan, her gaze warm as it held mine.“Yeah, thanks for letting me use this,” I said, handing the phone back.“It's no hair off my back.” She smiled, gesturing for me to sit. “We'll start whenever you're ready.”I blinked, then blew out a short breath. “I'm ready.”Tania nodded, her gaze dipping as she flipped her notepad open and took out the pen before raising her head again.“So,” she began with her usual smile, “how many things did you agree to over the past week?”The rest of the session was spent going over the things we'd spoken about, and her nodding most of the time to my responses–so much that I left her office–almost two hours later– in high spirits. For the first time,I felt no stares behind me,and that added to my light heartedness, prompting me to pull out my phone as I headed towards the car.“Hello,Miss,” Jordan's driver greeted. Up until t

CHAPTER 45JORDAN I pressed a hand to my temple, tamping down the irritation crawling up my spine ever since Maze left the office for her session with Dr. Woods.I wasn't even sure irritation was the right word…it could've been worry or perhaps a mix of both. She'd told me about her fear that someone was watching her,and when I offered to always take her everywhere, she flipped.Of course I was glad she'd told me about her suspicion, whether it was paranoia or not…but it also meant I hadn't had a moment of peace ever since.Ignoring the phone buzzing beside my laptop,I picked up a sheet and began entering the details in excel. She wasn't the one calling, otherwise ‘Vaina Loca’ would be blasting out of the phone's speakers.I was in love with Maze. Hopelessly, irrevocably…her soul called out my name, even when in my unconscious state. Sometimes my feelings for her scared me, because one cannot possibly love another so much without damning repercussions…and I w

CHAPTER 44MAZE “Well look who it is…” Linda beamed as I stepped out of the elevator, “I was just coming up to ask you to lunch.”“We must be connected then, cos same…” I said,my mouth already curved into a pleased smile.“And Mr. Black? He wouldn't mind me stealing you for about two hours would he?”“What kinda lunch lasts two hours?”“Our kind…you'll see why.” Linda's smile grew as she took my hand and promptly led me towards her desk to pick up the maroon coloured purse on top of it.“Hi Carey…no lunch break today?”The other woman chuckled as she reached down and pulled up a paper bag. “I brought mine,I'm tryna eat healthier so I made this myself.”“That's…actually really good.”“Yeah, she'll give it up in two days…” Linda blurted out as she playfully pulled me towards the door.“Hey! A little belief in me would do…” Carey called after us,and I threw her a smile over my shoulder just as we left the building.“Where are we going?”“To meet Paul,he got pro

CHAPTER 43 JORDAN I stifled an irritated groan as the phone on my nightstand vibrated the sixth time—interrupting the proposal I was almost through with. With a small sigh,I closed the laptop, moving it off my lap as I reached for the buzzing phone.Seeing Anna's name flashing across the screen, quickly snapped me out of my mental lag as I straightened and promptly slid my thumb across the screen.“Hi Jordan!”My lips twitched with a smile, “it's way past your bedtime, beautiful.”Her tiny ‘humph’ drew another smile from me as I swung my legs off the bed and stood up.“I know that, but there's ‘somethin really important I gotta tell you.”Moving towards the door,I shook my head at my little sister's statement. Because to Anna, every news was important.“It's about mom,” she continued in a slightly lowered voice. “Some man came to the house earlier…and he had blood all over him and he was reallyyy yelling at mom and I got scared and I…”“Wait a minute…” I swal

CHAPTER 42 MAZIKEEN “Maze Smith?”I nodded at the brown skinned woman, immediately captivated by her perfect smile and dentition.“I'm Dr.Woods ,but you can just call me Tania.”“Thank you,Dr…Tania,” I said as I shook the hand she offered before moving to sit opposite her.“I hope this doesn't come off as offensive but…” I paused, filtering my next words. “I was kinda expecting to see someone much older than you are…not that I think you're unqualified for your job because of your youthfulness but I…I…”“That's okay,” she cut in with a gentle smile, the full bun of dark coils behind her head, bobbing as she shook her head.“You don't have to explain, Miss Smith…I understand,I do get that a lot too.”“Oh,” I adjusted in my seat then sighed. “That's good then.”I watched as the pretty lady flipped her notepad open and scribbled something in it before raising her head and fixing me with a cool, attentive look.“Tell me your biggest fear,Maze.”“Oh…um…” all of a

CHAPTER 41JORDAN “Maze?”She looked up from the running tap,her eyes locking onto mine with an expression that wrenched at my heart.“I can handle anything but your silence…just..just talk to me?”Maze blinked then shook her head slightly as it to clear it.“Your hand…it looked like mine…from that night.” I watched her throat bob as she swallowed. Then she moved closer, raising the wet towel to my face and gently dabbing it at a cut I didn't even know was there.“I’m sorry.”Her brows furrowed and genuine confusion flashed in her honey coloured eyes.“Why'd you be sorry?”“I scared you…”Maze shook he head again,“I'm not scared,Jordan.”She pulled back and took my hand, dragging it under the sink and turning the tap on again.“I'm…surprised? Confused? Curious?” She held my hand under the running water with one hand, and with the other, she reached up and brushed my hair out of my eyes.“Your grew longer.”My jaw ached as I ground my teeth and nodded. “Yeah,
