The Choice She Refused

Aurora stared at the two men before her.

One stood cloaked in black, calm and unreadable, his crimson eyes never leaving hers.

The other stood tall and defiant, his chest rising with every breath after the battle, golden eyes filled with fierce determination.

Both waited.

Both expected an answer.

“I said…” Aurora’s voice shook, though not with fear. “I’m not going anywhere with either of you.”

Kael frowned.

“Aurora—”

“No.”

She took a step back.

“You’ve spent the last hour telling me I’m part of some prophecy, that monsters are hunting me, and that you’re a vampire while you’re…” She pointed at Kael. “…a werewolf.”

She laughed bitterly.

“If someone told me this yesterday, I would’ve called a psychiatrist.”

Lucien folded his hands behind his back.

“Your disbelief is understandable.”

“It doesn’t feel understandable!” Aurora snapped. “It feels insane!”

For the first time, Lucien’s expression softened.

“You’ve lost the life you thought you knew. No one expects you to accept the truth in a single day.”

Before Aurora could respond, the shrill wail of police sirens echoed through the campus.

Emergency vehicles poured through the university gates.

Students crowded around the damaged courtyard, each telling a different version of what had happened.

“A gas explosion!”

“It was a wild animal!”

“I think I imagined it…”

Lucien glanced toward the approaching officers.

“We should leave.”

Kael nodded reluctantly.

“The humans will only complicate things.”

Selene drove in silence.

Aurora sat in the front passenger seat, arms folded tightly across her chest.

Behind them, two black SUVs followed at a distance.

One belonged to Lucien.

The other to Kael.

Neither trusted the other enough to leave Aurora alone.

“They’re seriously following us?” Aurora asked.

Selene sighed.

“They won’t stop.”

“They’re acting like I belong to them.”

Selene didn’t answer.

The silence spoke louder than words.

Black candles burned with violet flames.

“No.”

The figure slammed a fist against the mirror.

“You failed.”

“I tested them.”

“The prophecy is true.”

“There are two Mate Bonds.”

Even through the mirror, the figure seemed disturbed.

“Impossible.”

Morgana’s smile widened.

“Nothing is impossible anymore.”

She placed her hand against the glass.

“And that makes her far more valuable than we imagined.”

Night had fallen by the time Aurora returned home.

She unlocked the door, stepped inside, and froze.

A woman stepped into the light.

She appeared to be in her late fifties, with silver-streaked black hair woven into a long braid. Her emerald-green cloak shimmered faintly, embroidered with tiny crescent moons.

Her eyes settled on Aurora.

They filled instantly with tears.

“My child…”

Aurora’s heart raced.

“Who are you?”

The woman smiled sadly.

“My name is Elyra.”

She lowered herself to one knee.

“I was your mother’s guardian.”

Aurora’s breath caught.

“My… mother’s?”

Elyra nodded.

“I made her a promise.”

“What promise?”

“That when your mark awakened…”

She looked directly at the silver crescent glowing beneath Aurora’s collarbone.

“…I would find you before the darkness did.”

A heavy silence filled the room.

Then Elyra spoke the words that shattered everything Aurora thought she knew.

“Your mother didn’t die in an accident.”

Aurora’s face went pale.

“What?”

“She was murdered.”

The room spun.
