The Truth is Unraveling

“Hospital?”

Cassian stared blankly at his phone long after the screen went dark.

That message kept ringing in his head.

“Why was she there?” He thought aloud.

“Elowen doesn't look sick and isn't behaving like someone dealing with a medical emergency”. He muttered to himself.

Cassian quickly grabbed his jacket from the back of his work chair and stormed out of the office.

Cassian doesn't wait for answers, he instead went to get them by himself.

Cassian walked briskly to the front desk in the clinic pulling out his identification.

“I need information about a patient”, He said calmly, expecting answers.

The both nurses on the counter there stared at themselves in wonder.

“Sir, I'm sorry but patient privacy…”One of them said.

“Mmmh…my firm owns forty percent of this building so I'm not asking”. Cassian said, coolly.

The nurses gasped and got into action.

“Sorry sir”, one of them said quickly. “We can't release this information.”

Cassian leaned closer to the desk and said; “Just tell me if she's okay”.

They responded positively and he asked them if I had come with anyone then and they replied in the negative.

Then he nodded and left.

Across town, I sat on my bed feeling the urge to puke. I was so exhausted.

I was craving different things in the middle of the night.

Nobody stayed next to me or got me what I craved for .

I was seeing the symptoms of the pregnancy.

The only thing my pillow did was to decrease the pain in my spine.

I pressed my hands to my eyes sobbing.

The next morning, Yura monitored Cassian as he was exiting the elevator.

His face had no expression at all. He just walked past her without a word.

Not even a greeting.

He followed him to his office and entered without even knocking.

“What do you want, Yura?” Cassian asked looking up.

“You've been distant”.

“I've been busy”.

“With her?” Yura snapped.

Cassian looked up to her and stood up

“What did you just say?”

Yura smiled thinly.

“Don't insult me by pretending that you don't know Elowen”.

Cassian warned her telling her that he didn't want the name on her lips again.

“So, it's her”, Yura scoffed. “You are falling already. Just like before”.

Cassian's eyes darkened.

“You don't remember?” She asked.

Cassian stepped closer to her.

“Remember what?”

“Another woman, another hotel and another mistake”. Yura smirked.

“Huh?

“You didn't just sleep with her. You ruined her”.

Yura broke out.

His eyes widened in shock.

That afternoon, I received a message in my email from the HR.

REPORT TO THE EXECUTIVE FLOOR IMMEDIATELY.

My heart skipped. I wondered why I was called to the executive floor of all places.

I felt nauseating and at the same time, I was scared.

I stepped into the elevator and at every ride, something kept telling me that I'd be exposed. This is either the beginning or the end.

Finally, I stepped out from the elevator with my heart pounding violently.

At the end of the hall was Cassino's office .

The door was open like it was a prepared entry for me.

I breathed a heavy sigh and stepped in.

Inside, Cassino stood by the window with his hands in his pockets and he asked me to close the door. I did.

“You went to the hospital three weeks ago”.

That sentence came like a bombshell to me.

“I..I..”. I stuttered.

“Why?” He asked. He didn't sound cruel.

I wanted to lie, say the truth and cry at the same time.

“I..I was sick”. I whispered.

There was a brief silence for a while

Until he said….

“Did you go alone?”

And I answered negatively.

My eyes became teary not because I wanted to cry but because my body hadn't been listening to my orders lately.

He told me that he wasn't judging me and he wanted to know the truth.

“I can't”, I whispered, shaking my head.

“Why?”

“Because if I tell you, everything changes”.

I replied.

There was a grave silence. I didn't speak and my hands trembled in fear.

“I'm scared”. I said holding the hem of my dress.

“If you are, somebody hurt you”.

I nodded. Tears dripped down my face.

“You didn't look like this when I met you. I remember how you looked at me that…

He was interrupted by a knock.

It was Yura.

“Cassian”, she called softly. “Can I come in?”

He didn't look away from me.

“Not now”.

She laughed softly and opened the door and walked in.

I flinched.

“So this is where you have been disappearing to huh?”

Cassian turned and asked her to get out.

Yura smiled.

“My office too, remember?”

She stepped closer to me.

“You look pale”, she said softly. “ Are you sick, Elowen?”

Cassian stepped in between Yura and I and told her that I was under his protection.

Yura froze.

My heart sank because I knew what that meant. It meant war. I cried out in my mind.

Then Yura spoke again.

“Does she know, Cassian?” She asked softly with a grin on her face.

“Know what?” I whispered.

Yura grinned.

“Ask her”. She said, “Ask her why she fainted in the hospital”.

The room spun and Cassian gazed at me.

And all I could hear was my own heartbeat….
