FINNIAN

I came to the palace to check on Isolde, as usual. Thank the gods, she’d been stronger these past few days, walking again, even if only within the palace walls.

I’d pleaded endlessly with Rowan before he finally gave in, and now she was back practicing her magic too. That spark of hers hadn’t died.

I followed her to her garden. She wanted to show me where the heir had died. I’d been investigating too, quietly. But nothing made sense yet. No clue had teeth.

“Here,” she said, stopping suddenly. She turned and stumbled into me, almost falling. I caught her waist before gravity got the better of her. Her eyes widened, startled, soft.

“Careful,” I whispered, voice close to her ear. She froze, just for a second. Then she nodded quickly.

“Yes, thank you, Prin...” she paused, catching herself.

That damn title again.

How many times did I have to tell her to use my name?

‘Even outside?’ Marlin scoffed in my head.

Maybe not. But when we were alone, I wanted her to say it. Just Finnian.

ISOLDEWe finished bathing though it was done by the maids. I had no choice. It was Rowan’s order, and when the King gave an order, you obeyed. No one disobeyed him and lived comfortably afterward. They dressed me in a sky-blue, flowered royal gown, its fabric catching the light like crushed ice. It was one of the dresses Rowan had sent to my chambers. He knew what suited me and it annoyed me that he did.Elsa joined me by the mirror, leaning against the table while I studied my reflection.“You’re so beautiful like always,” she beamed.I turned to her with a small smile. “You’re more beautiful than I, Elsa. You know that.”Her brows arched. “You’re joking, right?” She let out a soft laugh, shaking her head. But I wasn’t joking. My sister’s beauty was almost ethereal: her glossy black hair that caught the candlelight, her warm brown eyes, that perfect set of white teeth that seemed to light up a room when she laughed. Sometimes I thought it should have been me in her position, not the

ISOLDEI had tiptoed... for what?!I forced myself to snap out of it, giving myself a light slap in my head. He let my hand go slowly, almost like he didn’t want to, and I swallowed hard before walking toward Velin again.“Let me help you,” I said softly, my voice calm and sweet despite the ache inside. “I won’t hurt you, I promise.”She looked at me as though my words were poison.“You’ve already broken me… far more than hurt. There’s nothing you can do to return him. Nothing you can do to wash yourself clean. I can never forgive you.”Her voice was low but sharp, and before I could reply, King Rowan stepped in, his presence instantly filling the room. He scooped her up like she weighed nothing.“Don’t worry, I’ll do this myself,” he said, his deep, dominant voice cutting off anything else I might have tried to say. Then he turned, carrying her out of sight.I knew exactly what they were going to do... the quick, intimate, quiet way royals healed their own. The thought burned through

ISOLDEI couldn’t think straight. His hand had found its way under my thigh again, warm and possessive, while my sister sat across from us, her mouth running with whatever nonsense she thought fit for a royal dining table. We had already started eating, but I could barely touch my food. My appetite had gone the moment I caught Prince Finnian’s eyes. Just for a heartbeat, something flashed in them, hurt… or rage. I couldn’t tell which one.But then, as quickly as it came, it was gone. His expression smoothed into that calm mask he always wore, as if nothing could reach him.I forced myself to focus on my plate, even though my hands trembled slightly on the fork. That was when a guard’s voice rang through the hall, loud and urgent.“Your Highness! Queen Felda is here!”The double doors opened before the King even gave an order, and my breath caught. I recovered quickly, but the sight of her still made my chest feel tight. She walked in wearing a royal blue gown that hugged her perfectly

ISOLDEKnock. Knock.“Yes, come in.”The door clicked open, and Marie slipped in, bowing her head.“Your Highness, you have a visitor.”I shifted on the bed, curiosity rising. “Do you know who it is?”She nodded. “Your sister. She said she’s your sister.”I shot to my feet. “Elsa? Where is she?” The words tumbled out too quickly, my feet already carrying me toward the door. I forgot Marie was even there, forgot everything... because it had been years since I’d last seen her. My chest warmed just at the thought of her face. But before I could reach the door, it swung open.Arianna walked in, draped in a blinking light-purple royal dress, the kind meant to blind the eyes and remind you of your place. Eve followed, carrying golden beads and heavy jewelry clinking with every step. For a moment, I almost forgot what it felt like to be queen... then I remembered. They bowed. “Your Highness, we are here to take your bath.”My brows knitted. Why now? They only insisted on bathing me when Alph

FINNIAN“Do you all hear what my brother just said?!” Rowan’s voice cracked through the palace hall like a whip. He thrust his arm toward me, clapping my shoulder as if I was some boy who’d just brought home a gold prize.“An eye for an eye. A head for a head! Blood for blood!”This time there was no mumbling from the elders. They wanted to speak, their hands went up here and there but Rowan already had the room in his teeth. He gestured for me to sit while he strode to his throne, chest rising and falling as though he’d just dragged a weight too heavy for anyone else to carry. He took hard steps to his throne, sitting comfortably.“Yes, let’s hear what you’ve got to say, Felix,” Rowan said.Felix stood, his face tight, his bow stiff. “Your Highness, I don’t agree with this. There will be too much bloodshed. Innocents will die.”Rowan leaned forward, resting his forearms on his knees. His voice dropped, but it was no less sharp. “It’s not your wife and children marching to war, Felix.

FINNIANLater in the day, the elders arrived, each of them bowing deeply to the Alpha King before taking their seats. The air shifted the moment they stepped in. It was heavy and silent. No one spoke unless Rowan did first. My brother never liked the idea of Beta or Gamma, or anything traditional, for that matter. Said it made the pack lazy, too reliant on rank. We only had guards and warriors. No middlemen. You either fought for the pack or you didn't belong.“You sent for us, Your Highness,” Felix said, standing on the left side. He wore a mask of obedience, but I knew better. His smile was always too perfect, his voice too smooth. Something was rotting behind those eyes. I could smell it.Rowan didn’t respond. He just stared down at them, sitting on that thick black throne carved from iron oak, the symbol of the Stormclaw pack behind him like a shadow ready to strike.“Did none of you see what was going on? Did none of you hear what’s been happening to the members of our pack?” Row
