Thirteen - Dinner

Althea's P.O.V

Once I entered, I assessed the formal dining hall and my breath hitch. It was stunning.

Candlelight flickered from elaborate candelabras placed down the length of a massive wooden table. Flames were dancing. Cast were moving shadows on the walls. The scent of roasted meat and fresh bread filled the air. My stomach churned at the smell.

Crystal glasses caught the light and threw rainbow patterns across white tablecloths. Everything was perfect and expensive.

And sitting around th

  • Bound To The Alpha Who Broke Me   Twenty - Tired

ALTHEA'S POV I woke up to bright sunlight and a pounding in my head that made opening my eyes feel like a punishment. For a moment I just lay there staring at the ceiling of Riley's room, waiting for the world to stop tilting. My mouth tasted terrible. My body felt heavy and slow in the particular way that only came from too much wine and not enough sleep. Then the memories started coming back. Riley sitting beside me on the bed, refilling my glass while I talked too much and cried too easily about things I should have kept to myself. The empty bottle on its side. The room spinning pleasantly at the edges. And then Xavier. Heat flooded my face before I was fully awake. Shit! Shit! Shit! Xavier had come. He had stood in the doorway looking at me with that careful unreadable expression while Riley made her exit with suspicious efficiency. I remembered how I leaned on him and touched his face. How his hands were at my waist and his chest was warm. And solid when I ended up closer

  • Bound To The Alpha Who Broke Me   Nineteen - The In-Between

Xavier's P.O.V The silence that followed was complete. Vivian's expression went blank. Cassia looked at her hands. Selene held my gaze for one long moment and then looked away. Marcus caught my eye from across the table. He had arrived mid dinner as he sometimes did. He had loved Emerald with everything a father could give. He did make a mistake at Emerald’s funeral by bringing a witch to revive her daughter but he also apologised later. I understood him though. Maybe his love for his daughter made him do that. Maybe he wasn't in his sense at that moment. And he loved me too. He looked at me now and said nothing. Just gave me a small nod, like something he had been waiting for had finally arrived. I stood and left before anyone could find words. But as I walked out into the quiet compound I felt it again. That specific guilt that had been following me for weeks. Emerald. I had just dismissed three potential Lunas. Women who could have given the pack stability. Who wer

  • Bound To The Alpha Who Broke Me   Eighteen - The Seat She Left Empty

XAVIER'S POVI knew something was wrong the moment Althea left the dining hall.I saw it before anyone else did. She was my mate, obviously I would know. The way her shoulders pulled inward as she stood. The careful measured steps toward the door, like she was concentrating very hard on not falling apart before she made it outside. Riley was already moving to follow her before the door had fully closed.I turned back to the table.Cassia was speaking about trade alliances with the northern packs. She had done her research and it showed. Under any other circumstance I would have been genuinely engaged.Instead I watched her mouth move and heard perhaps one word in three. My attention kept pulling toward the empty seat at the far end of the table. The particular shape of Althea not being there.I reached for my glass and made myself a drink. This was not the first time I had sat at this table fighting myself. She's human, I had told myself. And humans had killed Emerald but then there w

  • Bound To The Alpha Who Broke Me   Seventeen - Drunk

Althea's P.O.V I knew it would be bad before I even walked through the doors. My stomach had been turning all afternoon. My hands wouldn't stop shaking while I dressed. The heart in my chest beat an uneven, anxious rhythm that I had learned, over these past weeks, meant something my body understood before my mind caught up. I smoothed the front of Riley's borrowed dress and walked in anyway. The dining hall had been transformed. The table was set with china so fine it looked like breathing on it too hard might shatter it. Flower arrangements that probably cost more than my rent sat at perfect intervals down the length of polished wood. And at the center of it all sat Selene, Vivian, and Cassia. They had dressed for a different occasion than the rest of us. They had worn evening gowns. Their hair were elaborated and jewelry that caught the light with every small movement were hanging on their body. They looked like they had been assembled specifically to make every other woman i

  • Bound To The Alpha Who Broke Me   Sixteen - Watching From Afar

The note was on the floor when I opened my eyes. I stared at it before I even got out of bed. Stay in the main house today. The Deltas will be touring the territory. — X No explanation. No apology for last night. Just an order, slipped under the door like I was staff being briefed for the day. I crumpled it slowly in my fist. I got dressed without looking in the mirror. The dining hall was louder than expected for early morning. Pack members moved around with plates and cups, easy laughter passing between tables. The kind I had been watching from just outside the edges since the day I crashed onto their land. Riley spotted me the moment I sat down. She looked at my face and didn't say anything for a moment. Just studied me. "You look terrible." She said. "I know." She pushed a plate toward me without being asked. I looked at the eggs and felt my stomach turn. "Eat. You're getting too thin." I picked up the fork but put it down when I noticed less people than usual. "Wher

  • Bound To The Alpha Who Broke Me   Fifteen - As You Command

Althea's P.O.V Leo walked me back to Xavier's room in silence. Not uncomfortable silence. Just companionable quiet. Like he understood I did not have words right now and was not going to demand any. When we reached the door he finally spoke. "That was interesting." I let out a sound that was supposed to be a laugh and came out as something rawer. "Which part? The part where the Deltas made it clear they hate me? Or the part where Xavier defended me even though I am nothing to him?" "The part where Xavier looked ready to tear Selene apart for insulting you." Leo's voice was completely serious. No lightness in it at all. "I have never seen him like that. Not even during the worst rogue attacks. Not even when..." He stopped. But I knew what he had been about to say. Not even when Emerald died. The unspoken words settled between us and I felt them like pressure against my sternum. I press

Althea's P.O.V The main house felt too large and too empty as I walked back through quiet hallways. My hands were still shaking. It became worse now than before. Althea's p.o.v I did not go back to Xavier's room right away. My hands would not stop shaking. The tremor started in my fingers and worked its way up through my wrists, settling into my shoulders like I had been carrying something too heavy for too long. I pressed my palms flat against my thighs

  • Bound To The Alpha Who Broke Me   Twelve - Echoes beneath the skin

Althea's P.O.V The Deltas arrived in the early afternoon. I watched from the window of Xavier's room. I pressed my forehead against the cool glass. My breath was fogging the surface in small clouds that disappeared and reappeared with each exhale. Three sleek black cars pulled up to the main ho

  • Bound To The Alpha Who Broke Me   Eleven - When Walls Crumble

Althea’s p.o.v The next morning, I woke to voices outside the door. It was low at first. Almost too quiet to penetrate the fog of sleep still clinging to my consciousness. But as my brain dragged itself toward wakefulness and the words became clearer. "You can't be serious about this. Not now."
