XAHEN.

I shoved through Nala's door without knocking.

She didn't even look up from whatever the fuck she was grinding in that stone bowl of hers.

"Took you long enough," she said, her voice dry as dust. "I expected you an hour ago."

"I had a council meeting." I let the door slam behind me. "You know. The one where my entire council ambushed me about my personal business. Business you told them about."

"They asked."

"So you just spilled everything?"

Nala finally looked up, one fair eyebrow raised. "They already knew you had someone. You dragged a half-naked woman through your palace, Xahen. Did you think people wouldn't notice?"

"That's not the—" I cut myself off, dragging a hand down my face.

It was hard to stay mad at Nala.

Not because she didn't deserve it—she absolutely fucking did—but because despite my general shortage of friends, Nala had been one for decades.

Longer than decades.

A hundred and twenty years ago, she'd washed up on my shore, half-drowned and spitting curses in th

XAHEN. Of course they fucking noticed. I turned away from them, walked to the window overlooking the dark forest. My forest. Once upon a time, I was grossly unaware of the name they’d given this Kingdom. Obsidian. I liked it. It had a nice ring to it. But I never named my territory that. I stared down at my black shadows dancing around the edges of the forrest, understanding why it got that name. People associated me with darkness. I loved it. With my back to my nosy council, I asked, “What do you want me to say? That she’s innocent? That I might be wrong?” I gripped the windowsill. “I can’t afford to be wrong.” Not again. And I’d rather be wrong that she was lying than trust her and have my heart nearly torn in two again. in the quite literal sense. There was silence behind me, until Draven’s voice came out quietly, “And what if you can’t afford to be right?” I didn’t turn around. “What do you want from me?” I asked finally, wondering how

XAHEN. The council chamber was already loud when I pushed through the heavy doors.Seven voices overlapped in the kind of organized chaos that told me they’d been at it for a while.I was late. Again. What else was new? The conversation died the moment I stepped inside, but not in the usual way it did when I entered a space. Not with that immediate, fearful silence that followed me everywhere else. This was different. Here, in this council of seven who help me rule over my kingdom, it was always different. They looked at me, acknowledged me with nods and murmured “Ithorno’s,” and then went right back to their discussion. But there was something in the air. A tension that hadn’t been there last week.I knew these group of people well enough to sense it immediately. I moved to my chair at the head of the table and lowered myself into it slowly, watching them.Beanne was mid-sentence, her hands gesturing emphatically as she spoke to Draven about medical supply shortages in the out

THEODOSA.The guard's hands were rough as he clamped the silver chains around my wrists. The burn was immediate and vicious, like he'd pressed hot iron directly to my skin. I bit down hard on the inside of my cheek, tasting copper, refusing to give him the satisfaction of hearing me cry out.He yanked me to my feet and shoved me toward the cell door.My heart was pounding so hard I could feel it in my throat, but I tried to hold on to one small, desperate fact: I'd seen Xahen three times now, and he hadn't killed me yet.The guard had said I was being moved, not executed.Although, I wasn't stupid enough to think the guards here would be above lying to me. This kingdom seemed way too depraved to worry about the mental state of their prisoners.I couldn't stop thinking about those men in the forest. The way Xahen had rounded them up and sent his wolf to slaughter every single one of them like they were nothing more than meat.In Duskmire, criminals were hung at worst. Maybe shot. Death

XAHEN.“Search the western wing again. Every closet, every crawl space. If a mouse moves, I want to know about it.”My voice seemed to bite into the walls of the throne room. The guard didn't even look up. He simply bowed, his shoulders hunched in fear, and scrambled away. I watched his retreating back, my jaw clenching so hard that I might crush it.I hated when they did that.Fled from me like I was some sort of bomb waiting to explode. On some days, I understood it. Today, I wasn’t patient enough to not be upset by it.Kane was gone, again.I had personally asked every guard on the perimeter. Not one of them had seen a flash of his coat or heard the sound of a footfall. But that was my brother, a ghost when he wanted to be.He had used the chaos of Theodosa’s arrival to play his games, manipulated every piece to fit his agenda, and the second the curtain fell, he had vanished. He set her on me and left me at her mercy. How fucking cruel of him.I stood in the center of the vast, em

  • Bound To The Cursed Lycan    NOT A FLUKE

THEODOSA The heavy door to the dungeon clicked shut, and the silence that followed felt heavy, like a physical weight pressing against my chest. I was back in my cell. Nala had brought me here moments after coming back into her cabin and telling me Xahen was gone. Now she was gone too.The only thing she left behind was the faint, lingering scent of herbs and a fear so cold it made my teeth ache.I didn't have a bed. I didn't even have a pile of dry straw. I sank onto the floor, my skin flinching as it met the freezing, damp stone. I pulled the silk robe tightly around me, but it did nothing to block the chill seeping up from the ground. My fingers trembled as I let the fabric slip just enough to graze my side. The wound from Xahen’s wolf was closing, the edges puckered and red. I traced the line in the dark. It would surely leave a scar. I’d carry a jagged reminder of the night the beast chose to let me live instead of killing me.With nothing but the darkness for company, m
