XAHEN.

The dragon lunged.

I threw myself sideways and felt the snap of its jaws close on empty air where my head had been a second ago. The ground cracked under the force of its landing and I rolled to my feet with my shadows already spreading out around me.

The thing was fast for its size. Faster than it should have been with all that rot eating away at its body.

It swung its tail and I ducked under it, feeling the wind whistle past my skull. My shadows shot forward and wrapped around its hind

XAHEN.The dragon lunged.I threw myself sideways and felt the snap of its jaws close on empty air where my head had been a second ago. The ground cracked under the force of its landing and I rolled to my feet with my shadows already spreading out around me.The thing was fast for its size. Faster than it should have been with all that rot eating away at its body.It swung its tail and I ducked under it, feeling the wind whistle past my skull. My shadows shot forward and wrapped around its hind leg, yanking hard enough to throw off its balance. The dragon stumbled but didn’t fall.It turned on me with a screech that made my ears ring and I barely got my shadows up in time to block the blast of black fire that poured from its mouth. The flames hit my barrier and the heat was immediate, searing through my defenses and licking at my skin.I gritted my teeth and pushed back. The fire stopped and I dropped the barrier and went on the offensive. My shadows speared toward its eyes, toward it

XAHEN. Arrett had my order ready before I finished walking through the door. Six crates of batch forty-seven, wrapped and stacked by the counter like he’d been expecting me. He probably had. I showed up often enough that the man could set his calendar by my visits. I counted out the gold coins without bothering to inspect the bottles this time. Arrett knew better than to fuck with my order. He’d learned that lesson years ago when I’d put one of his workers through a wall for trying to pass off watered-down swill as premium stock. “Pleasure doing business,” he said as I grabbed the first crate. I didn’t respond. Just hauled the crates outside and stacked them against the wall where Nala’s magic would catch them when the timer pulled me back. Then I checked my pocket for the list. Still there. I had time to kill. Nala had given me forty-five minutes this trip and the transaction with Arrett had taken less than ten. I could stand around and wait for the spell to drag me home, or

XAHEN. I needed more whiskey. The six crates I’d brought back from my last trip to the Eastern Realm were down to two and a half, and at the rate I was going through them, I’d be out before the week was over. Normally I’d just wait. Let the supply run low and make the trip when I absolutely had to. But sitting around my cabin with nothing to do except think about Theodosa Fane was driving me out of my fucking mind. So I went to find Nala. She was in her cabin when I walked in without knocking. Sitting at the table with papers spread out in front of her and a cup of tea going cold by her elbow. She looked up when the door opened and her expression did something complicated before settling into neutral. A week ago she’d told me Theodosa wasn’t the one she was trying to help and walked away before I could figure out what the hell that meant. We hadn’t spoken since. “I need a realm hop,” I said. “Hello to you too.” “Eastern Realm. Thirty minutes should be enough.” She set dow

THEODOSA.Seven days of staring at the same four walls was enough to make anyone lose their mind.I'd counted the cracks in the ceiling. I'd memorized the pattern of the wood grain on the floor. I'd rearranged Nala's bookshelf three times and she'd yelled at me twice for putting things in the wrong order. There was nothing left to do.Except think about him.The mate bond had been restless all week. It pulsed under my skin like a second heartbeat, tugging at me constantly, reminding me that he was out there somewhere. Some nights were worse than others. Some nights I could feel his moods bleeding through the connection, dark and heavy and impossible to ignore. Those were the nights I couldn't sleep.Tonight was one of those nights.I was lying on the couch staring at the fire when Nala walked in from wherever she'd been. She took one look at me and sighed."You look like shit.""Thanks.""When's the last time you slept?""What day is it?"She dropped into the chair across from me and

THEODOSA.Nala was taking me to see Binny and I couldn't stop thanking her for it."Seriously, Nala, I don't know how to repay you for this. I've been so worried about him and I didn't know if I'd ever get to—""Don't mention it.""But I really—""No, Theo." She glanced at me sideways as we walked. "I mean literally don't mention it. To anyone. Ever."My mouth snapped shut. That confirmed what I'd already suspected. Just because Nala was doing something didn't mean she was allowed to do it. She had a habit of bending rules until they broke and then acting surprised when someone called her out on it.I didn't know why she was suddenly going out of her way to let me see my brother. Part of me wanted to ask, but a bigger part of me didn't want to give her any reason to change her mind.So I kept my mouth shut and followed her through the winding streets of Obsidian. The dungeon building loomed ahead of us, all dark stone and narrow windows that let in almost no light. My heart started po

XAHEN.I couldn't focus on a single fucking word being said.It was on days like this that I hated the fact that I didn't deal transport with Duskmire and Lucenia.Maybe if I didn't move important cargo between realms, I wouldn't have to sit here and listen to my council bicker around me while my head was splitting over whether or not my mate had slept with some random male.Once the issue was handled, the council was still gathered around the table doing what they always did. Hale was droning on about border security. Afnie kept chiming in about diplomatic relations with the southern territories. And Draven shot me a look from across the table every few minutes like he was waiting for me to snap.I wasn't listening to any of it.My brain was stuck on that cabin. On that man's hand grabbing at her waist like he had any right to touch her. On her stupid smile. On the way she'd let him shove his tongue down her throat in broad fucking daylight for anyone to see. She'd been on her knees
