LUCIEN'S POV

I took the stone steps three at a time.

I told myself it was a routine check. A king confirming his asset was secured. That was all.

I told myself that the entire way up the eastern spire, and I didn't believe a single word of it, I threw the oak doors open.

The room was still destroyed. Shattered glass, broken chairs, ripped curtains across the floor. The smell of smoke and rogue blood still clung to the stone. And Aylin was standing by the cold fireplace with her back to me, comp

AYLIN'S POV They are all here.Every single one of them.I find myself standing in the center of a circle I did not walk into, and they are surrounding me, every girl who came to this palace when I did. The ones I passed in corridors, the ones I sat beside at meals, the ones whose names I never learned and the ones I did.The girl who prayed silently with her hands folded under her chin every morning in the vessel quarters. The girl who always stood beside Genevieve, quiet and obedient, following her like a shadow. Genevieve herself, standing straight even now, even here. And Mira. They are all bleeding. From their eyes, dark lines running slow and steady down their cheeks. From their mouths, spilling over their lips and dripping from their chins. From their fingernails, each drop falling to the ground without a sound. And they are smiling.Laughing and weeping at the same time, that horrible sound layered over itself, and every single face is turned toward me."It's your fault," the

LUCIEN’S POV"The council elders have called a meeting, Your Majesty."I looked at the guard."They called a meeting?" I said slowly."Yes, Your Majesty. They are assembled in the council hall and request your.....""They request." I looked at him calmly. "The elders called a meeting and are requesting my presence?."The guard shifted, his eyes darting to the floor. "Yes."I straightened my shirt. "Tell them I'm coming."The heavy oak doors of the council hall groaned as I pushed them open without announcement.Ten elders. Seated in the curved formation they always used when they wanted to feel collectively powerful. Old faces, old titles, old ideas about how a kingdom should be run and who should be running it.I took my seat at the head of the table. I said nothing. I just looked at them and waited.Elder Voss spoke first. He always did."Your Majesty. We have noticed, in recent days, how close you have become with the human." His voice dripped with disdain. "We believe this... atta

  • Bound To The Lycan King    CHAPTER 30: His Twin

LUCIEN’S POVI looked at the seal for a long moment without moving."Seraphine," Kaelen said quietly.I set the letter down. "I need space. Everyone out."Terak stood without a word. He looked at me once on his way to the door, the kind of look that carried everything he wouldn't say out loud and then he was gone.Kaelen lingered."Are you okay?""I'm about to find out."He stayed one more second. "I'm here. Whatever you need." He put his hand briefly on the doorframe. "Everything will be fine, brother."Then he was gone too.The study went quiet.I sat with the letter in front of me and didn't open it immediately.Seraphine.My twin. Four years of silence between us and she was writing to me now like it was nothing. We had been eighteen when our parents died. Inseparable before that always together, always fighting, always fine five minutes after. She was the louder half. I had needed her more than anything after they died. But she had left.Three weeks after the burial, a letter

  • Bound To The Lycan King    CHAPTER 29: How Did They Know?

LUCIEN’S POV"You called for a meeting?"Terak stepped in first, already reading the room before he crossed the threshold. Kaelen came in right behind him.Nerissa was still standing by the desk. She turned when they entered. "Beta. Gamma."Terak inclined his head once. "Nerissa."Kaelen smiled. "Nerissa. Always a pleasure."She returned it with practiced civility, then looked back at me."That will be all," I said. "The report was thorough. Well done.""Thank you, Your Highness."She left. The door had barely closed before Kaelen turned around. "What was she doing here?""Delivering reports." I moved behind my desk and sat. "I asked her to.""What kind of reports?""Warrior distribution, Female battalion assignments across the packs."Kaelen blinked. "You could have asked me.""She is one of the highest ranking in this kingdom. She's capable.""I know she's capable." He dropped into the chair across from my desk. "I'm just saying. You two were awfully close just now."Terak sat witho

  • Bound To The Lycan King    CHAPTER 28: Out of Place

I didn't want to go back to my room.So I walked. No direction, no destination, just movement through the quieter parts of the palace until my feet carried me somewhere my mind hadn't planned. The door was slightly ajar. Warm light through the gap, papers shifting, a quill moving.I peered in.Lucien sat at his desk, head bent over documents, sleeves pushed to his elbows, hair falling loose around his face."Who's there."I froze."Come in."l pushed the door open. "I was walking. I got turned around and stumbled onto your study. I didn't mean to disturb you."He looked at me. "It's fine."He set his quill down. "How are....""How are you doing?" I said at the same time.We both stopped."Sorry," I said. "You go first.""You go first," he said at the same time.I looked at him. He looked at me."You first," I said firmly."I'm fine."He didn't look fine. The shadows under his eyes were deeper than two nights ago, his hair longer than any king probably intended. And somehow.... in a wa

  • Bound To The Lycan King    CHAPTER 27: Nostalgia

I woke up gasping. My hands were gripping the sheets so hard my knuckles had gone pale. Sweat soaked through my clothes, my chest heaving, my breath coming in short uneven pulls I couldn't steady. The dream. My mother's voice. The forest. Her shape dissolving between the trees no matter how fast I ran.I sat on the edge of the bed and pressed both hands flat against my knees and breathed until the room stopped closing in.I drew myself a bath. The warm water helped. I sat in it until my breathing evened out and the dream loosened its grip. By the time I stepped out I felt steadier. Not fixed, just steadier.I crossed to the dresser and pulled it open.Dresses where everywhere. Organized neatly across the full wardrobe, more than I had ever owned in my entire life, fabrics ranging from deep jewel tones to soft creams and pale blues. The maids, They must have restocked it while I was away.I reached out and ran my fingers along the nearest rack.Silk, Linen. Something soft and embroider
