FLORA

The words hung between us now. It was a challenge I hadn't meant to use, and now I couldn’t take it back. Dante's eyes darkened, and his face hardened into the mask I had seen him wear with his enemies but never with me.

"Jealous?" he scoffed. "Don't flatter yourself, Flora Miller."

The dismissal stung more than it should have and now I was determined to get my own pound of flesh back. "Right. Because you've been so warm and welcoming since the factory incident. You’ve barely spoken to me except about business. You keep watching me when you think I don't notice, then you shut down if I try to have an actual conversation with you."

"I've been recovering from nearly dying," he said coldly.

"And building new walls," I countered. "I'm your family, not your possession, Dante. You can't forbid me from doing anything."

Dante remained silent, and the expression on his face remained unreadable too.

"Is that why you've kept your distance?" I demanded, unable to stop now that I had started

FLORAThe first bullets tore through the walls like they were made of paper. I fell onto the floor as the already weak plaster exploded around us, scattering dust and debris everywhere."Move!" Dante shouted right before he grabbed my arm and pulled me behind an overturned table. Salvatore was already firing through a broken window with his expression focused on the task at hand.Sofia and Carlo had taken cover behind a massive stone fireplace. The man who claimed to be Carlo Romano had his gun out, and he was currently firing shots toward Lorenzo's men outside."We need to get to higher ground!" Salvatore called over the sound of gunfire. "They're surrounding the building!"Dante nodded and gestured toward a doorway on the far side of the room. "We’re going to take those stairs and go through the back corridor!"I followed his lead, staying low as we moved carefully from one item to the next for cover. A bullet suddenly shattered the wooden frame a few inches from my head, and I felt

FLORA"Plans change," the man—Carlo—responded. "Antonio has the Colombians backing him now. He thinks he doesn't need us anymore.""Then he's a fool," Sofia snapped. "The Colombians will use him and discard him once they have what they want. Where is he now?""He’s still in California, negotiating the final details. He'll be back tomorrow."There was a pause, and we heard their footsteps moving across the room."What about Lorenzo?" Sofia asked. Her voice was quieter now. "Are you sure?""My men at the hospital confirmed it. He flatlined and they couldn't revive him. The official statement will come tomorrow."Sofia let out a long breath. "I never wanted it to come to that.""He was loyal to Dante," Carlo said dismissively. "He would have exposed everything.""I know. But he was family.""And family is exactly why we're doing this," Carlo said. His voice was gentler now. "Your brother is leading the business into ruin, Sofia. He’s making allies with the wrong people. He’s making deals

FLORAThe private jet moved through the clouds as we headed back to Miami. Dante hadn't spoken much since we boarded the plane. His attention was still fixed on the pictures that Salvatore had given us. I really couldn't blame him though, because finding out that your dead uncle might be alive and conspiring with your sister would silence anyone.Salvatore was sitting in front of us. He had cleaned up now and was now back in his usual attire. The transformation from a homeless man to his normal self was quite remarkable. Just before we had boarded the plane, he had insisted on accompanying us. He claimed he had more information that couldn't be shared over the phone."It's not possible," Salvatore finally said, breaking the tense silence. "That man can't be Carlo Romano."Dante looked up sharply. "It's his face, Salvatore. Don’t you think I would know my own uncle?""I understand what you're seeing," Salvatore replied carefully. "But I'm telling you that Carlo Romano is dead. I confir

FLORADante nodded sadly. "The hospital’s security cameras show her visiting his room just before his condition deteriorated. She was alone with him for a few minutes."The silence that followed was really tense. I watched Dante struggle to process this final, damning piece of evidence. His sister had attempted to murder the man who had always been like a brother to both of them."She would have succeeded if the doctors hadn't been so quick to respond," Dante said. His voice sounded really hollow. "She's thorough. She’s always been."I reached for his hand, because I didn’t know what else to offer right at that moment. He gripped my fingers tightly as if I was the only thing that was real to him."We need to go back to Miami," he said after a long moment. "We need to confront her.""Is that safe? Antonio clearly knows we're here. What if Sofia knows we escaped?""We won't announce our arrival. We’ll fly privately to a different city, then drive the rest of the way." When his eyes met

FLORAThe gas burned my eyes and throat as Dante grabbed my arm and pulled me toward the bathroom. I stumbled after him, and my phone fell to the floor with my mother's panicked voice still audible through the speaker. Dante slammed the bathroom door shut and shoved a towel against the crack at the bottom."Get some towels wet," he ordered as he turned on the shower. "Use them to cover your mouth and nose."My hands shook badly as I soaked two hand towels under the water. The gas was already seeping through the door, and filling the small bathroom with its bad smell. Dante pressed a wet towel to my face while holding another one over his mouth."Fire escape," he said. His voice sounded muffled. He pushed the small bathroom window open and peered out. "It's clear. You go first."I hesitated, thinking of my phone I had left behind with my mother still on the line. "But my mom—""We can't help her if we're dead," Dante said bluntly. "Go now."The metal fire escape shook under my feet as

FLORA"That's not possible," Dante said immediately. "It's not her.""Dante—" I started to say."It's NOT her," he repeated, his voice rising as he interrupted me. "The image is blurry. It could be anyone.""Boss," the tech guy gently called out. “There's more footage from the same meeting. And the audio is clearer in this one."He pulled up another clip. The woman—which I was now completely sure was Sofia because of how clear this particular footage was—had now seated herself on a couch, and was sipping a brown liquid from a glass."How long before they figure it out?" Antonio asked."I don’t think they will," Sofia replied. Then she laughed. It was a sound I had heard countless times over dinners and meetings right from the first time I saw her when she came to visit me in the cramped apartment I had been staying in when I first met Dante. I looked at Dante, whose expression had turned as hard as stone."The video could be fake," he said flatly. "Antonio could have created this kno

FLORAThe private jet touched down in San Jose without so much as a bump. I gripped the armrest nervously. But my nervousness was not from the landing but from what awaited us. Dante was sitting beside me, and his jaw was set in that hard line I had come to recognize as his battle face."We're here," he said simply, then he unbuckled his seatbelt.I nodded after I had gathered my courage. After Lorenzo's warning about Sofia and the way his health had declined after then, we had come close to canceling the trip. But we knew Antonio's trail would grow cold after a while, so Dante had left his most trusted men to watch over my mother and Lorenzo at the hospital."You don't have to do this," Dante said for the tenth time since takeoff. "You could stay at the hotel while we—""Don't start that again," I said, cutting him off. "I'm seeing this through."He reached over and squeezed my hand. His touch was warm, and it contrasted greatly with the coldness in his eyes. "Just stay close to me a

FLORAOver the next hour, we planned our strategies like we always did. Harrison shared the FBI's plans with us while Dante explained how his own people would support. Sofia worked on her laptop, occasionally adding details about financial trails and the location of some places.I moved between helping my mother with her lunch and bringing Anthony ice chips, thinking about how everything had turned out."You're staring," Anthony commented when I handed him his pain medication."Sorry," I said. "It's just... Do you think Carlo Romano knew? About you being his son?"Anthony's expression softened slightly. "Funny how I've been thinking about the same thing too. If he did, he never reached out before he was killed,” he replied."Maybe he wanted to protect you," my mother said from her bed. Anthony and I turned to look at her immediately. "Carlo knew what Antonio was capable of, so if he had acknowledged you as his son...""I would have been a target," Anthony finished. The thought hung in

FLORAThe steady beep of medical monitors had become the soundtrack of my life over the past three days. I sat in the chair between two hospital beds. My mother was on the left, while Anthony was on the right. Both of them were still recovering from the kidney transplant surgery that had gone better than anyone expected. My mother's color had improved dramatically since she had received Anthony's kidney. The doctors were cautiously optimistic, and had used words like "remarkable recovery" and "exceeding expectations." Anthony, too had been the perfect patient, following all the medical instructions he had been given.I reached over to adjust my mother's blanket as she slept peacefully. The door opened quietly, and Dante slipped in. There were dark circles under his eyes which showcased his exhaustion. He had barely slept since Antonio's escape as he had been on the lookout for him and he had been calling in every favor owed to the Romano family."Any news so far?" I whispered as he ca
