 The Beast in the Shadows

Kaelen Voss was slumped on the floor, gasping for air, his Alpha pride had been crushed by the overwhelming pressure of Valerius’s aura. He wasn’t a threat anymore, a reminder of a life Lyra had already left behind.

"Lyra, get behind me," Valerius ordered. His voice wasn't a request, it was a command.

"No," Lyra snapped, her fingers moving quickly across the glowing interface of Unit 7.

"You're still fighting the poison in your system. If you burn your powers now to fight the drones, your heart will fail before the first wave ends. We don't fight them. We vanish."

"Vanish?" Valerius growled, his nine tails cutting through the smoke like sharp blades. "I am the Arch-Commander. I do not hide from cowards in mental toys."

"You aren't a Commander right now Valerius.” Lyra said, grabbing a tactical harness from her emergency kit and slamming it into his hand. "You're a husband who promised to take me home. Now move!"

The building shook again. A thermal blast sliced through the room, melting the metal frame of the bed where they had been sitting moments earlier.

Kaelen crawled toward Lyra, his hand catching the hem of her dress. "Lyra, wait! Take me with you! My father has a bunker, we can…"

Valerius didn't even look at him. A single flick of his silver tail sent Kaelen sliding across the broken floor.

"Touch her again," the Valerius said coldly, "and I will leave your head for the drones to find."

Lyra ignored them both. She was focused on the tactical feed. "The drones are controlled from a central hub in the alley," she said quickly. Unit 7, initiate the Spite Protocol. Flood the local frequency with Null-Static."

“Initiating,” the AI chirped.

Outside, the red lights began to flicker wildly. The drones suddenly lost coordination. Blinded by the absolute silence of Lyra’s frequency projected through the building’s antenna, they began to collide with each other in mid-air.

"Now!" Lyra grabbed Valerius’s hand.

They ran. They didn't take the elevator—a death trap—but the service chute Lyra had prepared months ago for an escape route she had hoped never to use.

Lyra led him toward a nondescript, armored transport vehicle—a "Ghost-Van" designed to be invisible to Imperial scans.

Valerius stopped at the door, his ears twitching. He turned back toward the elevator shaft.

"What is it?" Lyra whispered urgently.

"They aren't just drones," Valerius whispered, his violet eyes glowing with a terrifying clarity. "I can smell them. The Black-Sun Assassins. They’ve bypassed your static. They're already in the basement."

At that exact moment, the reinforced doors at the end of the corridor twisted violently then exploded inward.

Three figures stepped through the flames. Each assassin held a weapon. Dusk-Blades—weapons designed to sever the connection between a shifter and their primordial form.

Valerius stepped in front of Lyra. His nine tails expanded to their full length, glowing with a violent royal amethyst light. He looked like a god of war carved from starlight.

"Stay in the van, Lyra," he said softly.

The clingy vulnerability from earlier was gone. This was the man who had conquered three star systems before his twentieth birthday.

"Valerius, your runes—they're bleeding!” Lyra screamed.

He didn't care. The violet light intensified, the floor beneath him cracked under the weight of his power. He moved.

It wasn't a fight; it was a slaughter.

He became a blur of silver fur and violet lightning. He didn't use weapons; his tails were his blades. He moved with deadly precision, one that made the elite assassins look like children.

In a few seconds, the liquid-chrome suits were shredded, and the Dusk-Blades lay shattered on the concrete.

But as the last assassin fell, Valerius staggered. He coughed suddenly, violet blood staining his lips. The effort of forcing his power while the poison was still in his system was tearing him apart from the inside.

Lyra rushed to him, catching him before he hit the ground. "I told you! You're killing yourself!"

He gripped her shoulder, his claws digging slightly into her skin. "I would… die a thousand deaths… before I let them lay a finger on you."

He looked up at her, his violet eyes fading, a strange, desperate smile touching his lips. "You really are... a miracle, Lyra Solis."

Before she could respond, the Ghost-Van’s sensors began to scream.

“WARNING: HIGH-LEVEL IMPERIAL FREQUENCY DETECTED. AUTHORIZATION: EMPEROR MAGNUS THORNE. SHIP TYPE: THE DREADNOUGHT SOLARIS.”

Lyra froze.

The ceiling of the basement didn't just break; the orbital blast burned a massive hole through the structure above them.

Lyra looked up. Hovering in the sky like a second sun was the Emperor’s flagship. The massive golden hull blocked out the moon.

But it wasn’t a rescue mission.

"Lyra," Valerius whispered, his voice full of a new, sharper fear. "My father... he didn't come for me. He came to purge the evidence of the failed match."

At the center of the ship, a beam of pure white energy began charging.

An Obliteration Beam.

They weren't just going to kill the assassins, they were going to erase the entire block and everyone on it.

“Unit 7!” Lyra screamed, throwing herself over Valerius’s body. "Signal the Solis family encryption! Tell them I have the Prince! Tell them…"

The light from the ship became blinding. The ground began to turn to glass.

Just as the beam fired, Lyra’s terminal flashed a single, terrifying message from an unknown source:

“THE EMPEROR KNOWS WHAT YOU ARE, NULL-FREQUENCY. AND THAT IS WHY YOU CANNOT BE ALLOWED TO LIVE.”
