I don’t wait for anything else to be said.

The moment Maya’s words settle in the air, I thought you would never ask, something inside me snaps, clean and sharp, like a thread pulled too tight.

I turn on my heel and storm toward the stairs, my heart pounding so loudly it feels like it’s echoing off the walls.

“Sage!” Andre calls after me. “You can come too if you want.”

I don’t slow down. I don’t turn around.

“No thanks!” I shout back, my hand gripping the banister as I take the steps two at a time.

“Suit yourself,” he replies easily, like none of this matters, like he hasn’t just twisted something raw inside my chest. “I will go get ready. Maya, meet me at the patio in thirty minutes.”

Thirty minutes.

The number follows me upstairs, burning into my thoughts.
