Maybe I wasn’t exactly the inventor of good ideas but this might have been one of the worst ones yet.

I was basically stumbling through the party now, feeling dizzy and not in control of my own body.

It had clearly gotten late which meant the lights were own, not adding to how I was feeling by the way.

“Hey!” A girl yelled as I bumped into her on the way to the kitchen.

“Sorry.” I slurred turning to quickly to look at her that I completely face planted into a wall that I swear had come out of no where. “Ow.” I groaned stepping back and rubbing my forehead.

I felt a hand take my arm gently and for a second I thought it was Landon back from the bathroom.

Or at least I think that’s where he had gone.

I didn’t even remember what time he had disappeared. Everything was so foggy.

“You need to get some water in you.”

I knew I was drunk but not nearly drunk enough to not recognise that it was Nathan’s stupid voice that I heard from beside me and definitely not Landon’s.

I turned and surely en

“Hey, you ready for this?” I asked Lyra as I stepped out into the hallway. She was leaning against the wall looking deep in her thoughts. The last time I had seen Lyra this stressed was when we were preparing for a mass attack in the Eastern region. And even then, her determination to fight had tramped her nerves. But right now it was a completely different story. She looked up at me then looked around checking if anyone was coming before pushing off the wall and taking a step closer to me.“Why the he’ll aren’t you as freaked out about this as I am?” She hissed.I let out a sigh running a hand over my hair. Freaked out was an understatement. I was straight up running crazy. But that didn’t mean I could show it. Especially not here.I heard the sound of footsteps and waited quietly until the disappeared before I spoke again.“Because I have a job to do.” I spoke silently.Lyra furrowed her brows before giving me an incredulous look. “Thane, of what Piper said is true then the last thi

“It only hurts if you let it hurt.” I heard Jaimie’s voice from outside.I got up and looked out into the backyard seeing him crouched down by Landon who was grasping his knee on the grass.“That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard, Jaimie.” Landon responded still holding on tightly to his knee.I stepped out into the afternoon sun and Jaimie looked up to acknowledge my presence.“What’s going on here?” I asked.Jaimie stood to his full height which was few inches taller than me. A fact that he never let me forget.I had thought once I turned eighteen, I would finally catch up to him but alas, even at 6’6, he was the giant of the family.“Smart mouth over here fell and scraped his knee.” Jaimie spoke in amusement.I looked at Landon who was avoiding eye contact with me. Even at nine, he had a stubbornness about him that felt impossible to shake off.“Actually, the ground attacked me, thank you very much.” He spoke grumpily as he stood up wincing when he put his full weight on his fo

I let out a breath and fiddled with my fingers nervously.I looked to my side and saw Landon seated beside me looking confused but not budging one bit.I was grateful for his support but it didn’t do anything to ease my nerves.I knew after this, everything would change. And the worst part is that I didn’t know if it would matter. Cameron clearly didn’t care which side of the crossfire I got caught in.For the first time in my life, I realised that he wasn’t here to fight for me. The brother I had grown up depending on to protect me. The brother who had always promised to look out for me had given up on me…And now I was on my own.So I had to look out for myself. Even if it meant betraying him.“Whenever you’re ready, Piper.” Thane spoke walking to the centre of his office carrying all the authority I knew him to bare. But this time, as I looked up at him, there was something gentler and calmer. Lyra was standing beside him while Mary sat in a chair off in the corner.“Landon, this

“Next time one of us has the idea of kidnapping the sister of our enemy, let’s not.” Lyra spoke in an exhausted tone as she leaned forward on the dining room table resting her forehead in her hand.“Some tea, dear?” Mary asked as she appeared with a tea pot.I didn’t hear Lyra’s response as I turned to look into the kitchen where the little bird was sitting on a kitchen stool. Landon was beside her chatting animatedly to her.I could tell she was trying to smile along to what he was saying but more than once she winced and Landon stopped to reach forward and help her.Too many times I had to stop myself even from all the way here from rushing forward to see what I could do to make the pain stop.Mary had given her all the herbs she could think of but they could only go so far.And as far as healing could go… I don’t think she would ever truly recover if what she had told me last night was true.“Thane?” Lyra spoke.I tore my eyes off Piper and turned back to Lyra and Mary who were stu

This time when I looked up, I was in the study back home. I would recognise the rows of my great grandfather’s books anywhere. Cameron was seated at a desk scribbling something when he looked up at me. “Piper?” He asked in confusion. I wasted no time in scrambling to my feet. I was so relieved to see him,, I could cry. I rushed to Cam as he was getting up as well to meet me. “Hey, are you okay?” He asked calmly searching my face as he held on to my arms. For a second I couldn’t speak and I found myself trembling in his arms. Could you even tremble in a dream? Well I guess you could apparently. “Cam…” I spoke shakily. “He found me.” Cameron’s face dropped slightly and something seemed to flash across his face. “Your mark?” I nodded hastily then furrowed my brows in confusion. “Wait, how did you know?” Cameron let go of me. Even in his dream state I could tell my brother was on edge, the wheels in his head turning. He put a hand over his mouth before turning to me. “Okay, Pi

I knew something was wrong the second I drove up to my house and found Landon pacing outside waiting for me.I had hardly stopped my truck before he rushed up to me.“Thane.” He breathed out frantically.I quickly got out examining him searching for what the problem could be.“What’s going on?” I asked him hurriedly as I put my hands on his shoulders. “Landon, are you okay? Did something happen?”Landon was breathing heavily and I couldn’t ignore the panic in his eyes. He opened his mouth but no words escaped which only made me more concerned.I shook him.“Land-““Thane.” Lyra came rushing down the steps.“Come quick.” She spoke hurriedly.I furrowed my brows at Landon deducing that whatever was wrong didn’t so much as have something to do with him.I turned and followed Lyra, she led the way into the house.“What’s going on?” I asked.“Next time you freaking leave. Don’t go to a place without reception for hours!” She snapped angrily.“Lyra.” I growled. She let out a breath. “It’s P
