CHAPTER FORTY FOUR: DIVIDED LOYALTY

Elara's POV

The training consumed my days.

Lucien brought in Maelin.

The lessons were exhausting. She made me practice calling the magic without releasing it. Holding energy in my palms until sweat dripped down my face and my muscles shook then dispersing it slowly rather than in explosive bursts.

"Control is everything child. Power without discipline is just destruction waiting for a target."

I practiced for hours each day while Lucien watched from the shadows. Sometimes he would step in to demonstrate techniques for managing magical reserves. Other times he simply observed with that quiet intensity that made my skin prickle with awareness.

When training finished he would take me to his study where we spent evenings reading together. He taught me vampire history and politics, showed me maps of territories I had never known existed. Explained the delicate balance between the houses and how his mother maintained power through manipulation rather than force alone.
