"Not an option."

Hazel let those words sit in the air between them for a moment, turning them over, examining them from every angle.

Then she straightened her spine.

"Everything is an option," she replied. "You just don't want it to be."

Something moved across Alexander's face. Fast, like a shadow crossing a wall. Gone before she could name it. He stepped fully into the room, and immediately, the space shrank. Not because he was loud or aggressive. Simply because he carried a kind of weight that rearranged every room he entered.

Dr. Vincent shifted slightly beside her. Subtle. But she caught it.

Even the doctor moved differently when this man was present.

Alexander's gaze stayed on her, unhurried and completely unreadable, like he was solving something complicated behind those dark eyes and had all the time in the world to do it.

"You were dying," he said flatly. "The contract saved your life."

"You almost ended it first."

Silence.

She watched his jaw tighten. Just barely. A small, involuntary thing that told her the words had reached him even if his expression refused to confirm it.

"That's not something I'll discuss right now," he said.

"Of course not." She almost laughed. "Because that would require you to admit fault, and men like you don't do that."

Vincent made a quiet sound beside her. Something between a cough and a warning.

Alexander's eyes briefly moved to his doctor, and without a word being exchanged, Vincent picked up his chart, nodded once, and walked straight out of the room, pulling the door shut behind him.

Just like that.

Hazel watched the door close and felt the silence deepen around her like water rising.

She was alone with him now.

She turned back to Alexander, refusing to let that fact rearrange her posture.

"So," she said. "Now what? You lock me in this beautiful cage and pretend everything is normal?"

"You'll have everything you need here."

"I need my freedom."

"You need to recover first."

She stared at him. "You're not hearing me."

"I'm hearing every word," he said calmly. "I'm choosing not to act on them."

There was no malice in the way he said it. That was almost the worst part. He wasn't threatening her, wasn't raising his voice, wasn't performing dominance the way she imagined a man with his reputation would. He was just...stating facts. Like her objection was a minor weather update he'd already accounted for.

It was infuriating.

"Why me?" she asked. The question came out quieter than intended.

Alexander looked at her for a long moment. Something shifted in his expression, brief and unguarded, lasting no longer than a single breath before it locked back down.

"That will be explained in time."

"I want it explained now."

"What you want," he said slowly, "and what happens next are two very different things, Miss Carter."

"It's not Miss Carter anymore, apparently," she shot back. "According to your contract, it's Mrs. Bale."

Something happened then that she wasn't ready for.

He almost smiled.

It didn't fully form, barely a fraction of movement at the corner of his mouth, there and gone so quickly she nearly doubted herself. But she saw it. She was certain she saw it.

And somehow, that tiny incomplete almost-smile disturbed her more than his coldness did.

"You should rest," he said, turning toward the door.

"I'm not tired."

"Your body is, whether you admit it or not." He paused with his back to her. "The doctor will return with something for the pain. There's food being prepared. You won't be disturbed tonight."

"And tomorrow?"

He didn't answer immediately.

"Tomorrow," he finally said, "we talk."

Then he was gone.

The door shut, and Hazel stood in the middle of that enormous, impersonal room feeling the full weight of everything crash back into her at once. Her knees finally did what they had threatened to do since she stood up, and she sat on the edge of the bed before they betrayed her completely.

She pressed both hands over her face.

Eric. Sophia. The rain. The headlights.

And now this.

She had walked into tonight expecting the worst night of her life, and somehow, the universe had managed to top it.

She dropped her hands and stared at the opposite wall.

No. She wasn't going to fall apart here. Not in his house, not in his sheets, not in a room she hadn't chosen. If she cried, it would be on her own terms, and this was not the place.

She lay back carefully, wincing at the protest from her ribs, and fixed her eyes on the ceiling.

She thought about what Dr. Vincent hadn't said. The way he paused before answering, the way his eyes carried something heavy and unresolved. He knew more than he was giving. And for some reason, she had the quiet but certain feeling that he wanted to give it.

She thought about Alexander.

The way he looked at her when he first appeared in the doorway. Not like a transaction. Not like a problem. Like something he recognized.

Like he had been waiting.

That part refused to leave her alone.

Why would a man with his power, his resources, his reputation, need a contract with a girl who had nothing? What could she possibly offer someone like him that money couldn't already buy?

She turned the question over and over until her eyes grew heavy against her permission.

The room was too quiet.

The mansion was too still.

And somewhere down the long corridor outside her door, she heard it.

A sound.

Low at first, like something distant. Then it grew, filling the walls, seeping under the door. It wasn't a voice. It wasn't music.

It was something breaking.

Then a crash.

Then silence so sharp it cut.

Hazel sat up slowly, her heart already ahead of her.

Whatever Alexander Bale was hiding behind that cold, controlled surface...

It had just made its first sound.

Mrs. Bale. Those two words didn't just hit Hazel, they destroyed her. They tore right through whatever was left of her after that night. She stared at the maid, waiting for the punchline, waiting for the part where she laughed and said it was just a misunderstanding. But the maid's face stayed tight, pale, and very, very serious."Say that again," Hazel whispered. The maid swallowed. Her eyes darted briefly toward the door, then returned. "Please, keep your voice low.""Say. It. Again.""You're...Mrs. Bale now." Her voice barely made it out. "It's already been signed and witnessed."Hazel's mouth opened, but nothing followed. Her brain refused to process it. She looked down at her hand, the one still wrapped in bandages, and something cold crawled under her skin.Cold hands. Papers. Her fingers pressed down against her will.So that wasn't a dream."I didn't sign anything," she said, more to herself than to the maid. Her voice cracked somewhere in the middle. "I was unconscious. Everywhere suddenly became covered in darkness, cold that Hazel couldn't feel her body anymore. She couldn't even move. But somehow, she could still hear...and they were faint voices, very distant and at the same time distorted."... she's already losing too much blood!"That sounded like a female voice to her, panicking and eager to help. She prayed within her that help come her way. She could have wished for death, especially with the way she was treated like trash, but how will she make Eric and Sophia pay back if she doesn't stay alive? "There seemed to be no pulse...wait, it's here ... but very weak!" Another voice said, but it was a male voice this time. It came very urgent, demanding that attention be given to her immediately. Hazel tried everything possible to speak, tried to even move, to show them that she's still alive, but nothing responded in her body. It felt more like she's sinking... going deeper and deeper into nothingness. "Sir, we're obviously wasting time here

The moment the door swung open, Hazel's world shattered. She stood frozen, speechless and lost. Right there on the bed, was Eric, and with him was Sophia, with both of them entangled. Their bodies were pressed together, lips locked, completely lost in each other to even notice an additional presence. For what felt like eternity, Hazel couldn't move, she couldn't even think. Her breathing had already hitched. Before she knew it, the cake slipped from her hands, and landed on the ground, all her effort wasted. Eric and Sophia immediately pulled apart on hearing the sound. Their eyes instantly snapped to the door, and their gaze held hers. "Hazel...?" Eric muttered, stunned to see her standing there. Hazel couldn't even speak properly again, as her lips trembled. Her vision soon got blurry, and she knew it was just a matter of minutes, before she blanks out. "You.." she tried to form a word, but her voice was still breaking and unsteady. "You're...with her?" Her gaze shifted, and

Lights reflected through the glass window of a small apartment like golden rays. Inside, Hazel Carter stood in front of the mirror, as she adjusted the soft curls of her hair. After much admiration, her lips curved into a shy smile. Tonight was very special; and that's because it was her birthday. But more than just that...she had another plan. It was a surprise package for her boyfriend; Eric. Hazel quickly picked up the small cake which she had placed on a table at the middle of her living room earlier. It wasn't the perfect kind of the cake, as the icing was slightly uneven...but the good thing; she made it herself. She ensured every detail came out with love. "Four years," she whispered softly to herself. Four years of being with Eric. Four years of sacrificing for him, of believing in his dreams, of loving him unconditionally, even when he had nothing to his name. Her smile widened on remembering how far they had gone. "Today," she murmured to herself, "I will finally tell
