SORAYA

"Oh, dear heavens! It is the crown Princess."

I walked into the cafeteria along with Adele, who kept skipping around and jumping in excitement.

"I am trying to understand what you mean by it is the crown Princess, and why you are acting like you have won a lottery," I spat at my roommate with a frown.

"Come on, Soraya, must you always be so mean?" Adele whined.

"I am not mean, I am just being skeptical," I answered.

Adele scoffed. "Whatever you say, you will not ruin my mood when the Princess is here."

We found a table after getting our food and sat. The cafeteria was loud, with chatter and laughter filtering around. I took a bite from my food and looked back at Adele. "You said the Princess is here?" I questioned.

"Now you want to listen to why I am acting like I have won the lottery?"

"If you won't answer, then shut up, Adele," I said dryly.

"You see? Always so mean, but I will answer since it is my job to catch you in on the latest news in school." She paused for dramatic effect, earning an eye roll from me, then she continued.

"The crown Princess is here," Adele repeated.

"You said that before," I deadpanned.

"Calm down, I'm bringing it on slowly." I raised a single brow while Adele kept on talking. "According to my sources, Prince Daryl's sister has come to join us for our second year."

I snorted at that. "That is no big deal, I don't see why you should be excited about that?"

"You don't understand, do you?"

Instinctively, I allowed my gaze to find Daryl's table, but only Dolly and Axel were there. I glanced back at Adele. "Understand what?"

Adele palmed her face in a mock exasperation. "Princess Ilana is every Nevanda male fantasy and every Nevanda female's role model."

"Not mine though," I muttered.

"Of course not yours, I know. You are your role model. I mean, what can beat you winning a spar session with the Prince himself?"

I pressed my lips tightly together. If only Adele knew.

"Why do you think the Princess is here?" I asked.

"Am I supposed to know?"

"Well..."

"It was the same question we asked when the Prince suddenly showed up here. Everyone wanted to know why he would show up in Fenrir Pack of all places."

I gave Adele an inquiring gaze. "What do you mean Fenrir of all places?"

Adele gasped in disbelief. "You don't know? About the hatred that Fenrir Pack has for the monarchy? Where have you been living that you do not know these things, Soraya? Under a rock?"

I scoffed and put my last slice of pizza in my mouth. Again, I wondered—if only Adele knew who I was. I stood up after taking a large gulp of water, grabbing my books.

"Where are you going?" Adele questioned.

I glanced at my roommate. The new information she had given me was swirling in my mind, and I needed to think. "To the library," I told Adele.

"But–"

I did not wait to hear the rest of Adele's protest before turning on my heels.

The library looked like some sort of dome, I noticed as I made my way in. Books lined the shelves in different categories. I reached for the shelves tagged Spell Books on Curses and took out one that caught my eye.

It was a hardcover book. The cover was black, and on it was a gold imprint of a spell bottle.

"Is it not funny how we keep meeting in unexpected places?" Prince Daryl's voice was small, careful not to enrage the librarian whose hawk eyes followed every movement of the students in the library. But even when it was a whisper, it still sent stills of caresses down my spine.

"Perhaps you are stalking me, your Highness," I said, struggling to keep a blank face.

I did not look back to regard Daryl's presence as I went further into the stack of shelves.

"You wish, Karter. I have better things to do than stalk you."

"Better things like?"

It was an unexpected question, and even I was taken aback by my audacity. I grimaced but then assured myself that it was a strategic move; getting to know him so I would strike when he least expected it.

"Should I wonder why you are suddenly interested in what I spend my time doing?" asked Daryl with a quizzical look on his face, his smirk deepening.

"I am not interested in anything that concerns you, Daryl Ender. Do not get your pants twisted," I countered defensively.

Daryl glanced down at my hands. "I am wondering why you are holding that book. A spellbook of curses?" He raised his gaze back to my face.

I clenched my fingers over the book. "Perhaps I want to cast a spell on you."

"That is even if you could," Daryl commented, stepping closer to me, his breath fanning against my skin. "Do you wish to cast a curse upon me, Karter?"

"You doubt my skills, your Highness," I retorted defiantly.

Daryl chuckled. "Skills? I beg to differ, Soraya Karter."

He had a knowing glint in his eyes, like he knew I was hiding something but yet he did not push further, only dancing on the surface. But still, I asked, "What do you mean?"

"You know what I mean, I wonder why you are pretending," Daryl answered, all the while leaning in closer than he already had. I swallowed as my traitorous body reacted to the Prince's nearness; his scent was intoxicating, his dark gaze sending a flush through me.

It was wrong to feel this sort of attraction towards him when I was his supposed enemy. It was very wrong.

I stepped back as I forced the heat down my throat. "I would appreciate it if you maintain a good amount of distance away from me, Prince Daryl," I managed to say, my voice a raspy whisper.

Heavens, I was losing it. I was losing focus.

  • Bound by the Moon   17: one revelation, a step forward?

SORAYA"If you think we will be best forming bonds, and sitting through bonfires then you are sorely mistaken! You need to understand that we are in survival mode here, Adele!"By the time I entered the house, I noticed that it had been arranged, even the rooms upstairs were sparkling bright. A fireplace burnt just by the side of the living room, and a shelf had been brought with selected books lined in height order.I didn't know what it meant to be part of the Gala team, but it looked like it would be a big deal. Adele, Dolly and I were put in one room. Then Ilana and Elle in the other, and Axel, Ethan, and Daryl in the room upstairs. I had a notion—that the school wanted a blood bath before the gala. They would get one, because the room pairing is insane.I was staring at Adele with a deadpan face as we set up our sides of the room. The room was huge I noticed, and it was so beautiful—hauntingly so. The aura in the room was just as dark as the whole hous

  • Bound by the Moon   16: save my ass

SORAYAAll I had to do in this school, was kill the prince and get on with my life as a wolf hunter alongside my mother. How the heck did I end up playing detective, being a murder suspect, getting to represent the school in a deadly competition, and now—being chased by a wolf that seemed to have lost its mind?If you asked me those questions, I'd be as confused as you are.I grabbed Adele's hand because she was slowing down our pace as we ran, and pushed her into the broom closet I found, pulling the doors shut and holding it."That wolf is moon mad, did you see the eyes?" She whispered, I could feel her heartbeat as we huddled together."Yeah I know obviously. That's why I said to run Adele," I deadpanned, closing my hands as I held on to the door tightly.I had read about moon mad wolves in my training with my mother. They were wolves that had gone rogue, and we're unable to shift to their human form. They were deadly, and it was best to stay away from the

  • Bound by the Moon   15: one more attack

SORAYATell me, my dear reader, how often have you been knocked out of your senses by but a few words? I'll give my answer if I can, but well my senses have been knocked out—literally speaking."Wait, what?""I am quite sure you heard me, Miss Farrow. I don't think there's any need for repetition now, is there?" My gaze drifted to Daryl, whose face held as much confusion as I'm sure mine did."I thought it was a makeshift holding cell for Karter and me?" He spoke up.Sir Sinclair grinned as he relaxed. Now his amusement was really testing my patience. I really wanted to wipe that silly smirk off his face."As of 2:44 this afternoon," he lifted his phone and showed us the screen, a letter was displayed on it. "You and Soraya Karter have been proven innocent because of a lack of evidence. I am the lucky one to share the news with you.""Lack of evidence, when the librarian was found murdered in that same manner, just this morning? That doesn't make any sen

  • Bound by the Moon   14: The gala team

SORAYAClasses started with a bang. Ms Lily's murder was all anyone could talk about—and the Gala team announcement didn’t help. At this point, I couldn't even describe “normal” anymore.“The team representing this class, according to the developments that have been noticed, are: Ethan Farrow and Elle Farrow, Daryl Ender and Axel Lane, Dolly McCarthy and Adele Pierre, Ilana Ender and Soraya Karter.”The class erupted into loud chatter—chaos, really—because this lineup could as well be a death roll. Sir Sinclair had that knowing smirk as he called the names. The man knew exactly what he was doing. I could swear he had a hidden agenda.“You've got to be kidding me,” someone hissed from behind. I turned—it was Ethan.“You don't like the team, Farrow?” I teased.“Mind your damn business, witch!” he snapped. The anger rolling off him was enough to set the class on fire."All eight of you, come with me to my office!" Sir Sinclair's order rang through the class as he grabbed his stuff and l

  • Bound by the Moon   13: Elroy's sigil

SORAYAMy classes would have been another normal day with me plotting creative ways to kill the prince—if not for the 'murder' brand that had been tagged on myself and the prince's name.Everywhere I went, I could hear whispers, fingers pointing. I was suddenly not so invisible anymore. And I hated it."With the look on your face Karter, I can tell you are not enjoying the attention..." His voice held an amusement that vexed me, enough to make my feet freeze in step.He was so close, his lips just a few inches away from my ear. My fingers tightened around my books, wanting nothing more than to throw it at the smirk I knew was sitting pretty on his face. "I could stab you right now, your Highness," I seethed."Now, wouldn't that be so sweet to watch?" He responded, now snorting in between chuckles, and then just as low he whispered; "you wouldn't dare..."Daryl's silent warning returned me back to reality, and quickly I took two steps away, then turned to face him. His visage was cloud

  • Bound by the Moon   12: A lot is happening

SORAYAI hated dreams. I woke up from one I couldn't remember, and to a loud banging on the door. I jerked up, again greeted by a chill wind that came from nowhere. It was like there was a sinister presence here, and I could feel it."Finally, the sleeping witch wakes..."And why the heck was Daryl's voice deeper than normal? My eyelids fluttered open, taking a while to get accustomed to the bright light streaming from the window."Careful now, you don't want to rouse the shadows." Daryl's cutting tease was what reminded me of the night before—what had transpired."Nothing else happened?" I hated to admit how shaky my voice was when I asked him. But it was inevitable that beneath my whole fierce hunter charade, there was still that scaredy eighteen year old girl, whose mother had only just changed her life, six months ago.Even still..."You sound so scared for someone who beat me at a sword game on her first day here."If I could snarl at him, I would. "I hate you," I confessed tight
