The air in the pantry alcove had turned to ice.

Panic seized my chest as my gaze locked onto Eleanore, whose face had gone completely pale, looking as though she was about to pass out from sheer terror. Before any of us could scramble for an excuse, the massive wolf guard suddenly froze. The snarling, predatory aggression vanished from his eyes, replaced by a strange, glassy daze. He turned his heavy head away from the three of us, his nostrils flaring as his gaze locked onto Maria.

The silence stretched, thick and suffocating, until the guard let out a breathless whisper that left all of us entirely speechless.

"Mate..."

Maria stood frozen like a statue, her eyes wide with total disbelief, utterly unprepared for this absurd twist of fate. The guard’s expression shifted instantly. Realizing that we—the trespassers caught red-handed with stolen bread—were his newly discovered mate's closest friends, his posture softened. With a heavy, conflicted sigh, he backed away from the archway. He let us off with a stern, warning glare, his eyes lingering on Maria one last time before he turned and melted back into the shadows of the corridor.

The moment he was gone, a collective, ragged gasp of relief tore from our throats. We stared at Maria, who looked just as bewildered and terrified as we felt.

"I—I think it’s time we head out now, don't you think?" Eleanore whispered, her voice trembling as she clutched the canvas bundle to her chest.

We all nodded frantically. Without another word, we parted ways, whispering quick goodbyes and melting back toward our respective quarters before the sweep could catch us again.

Waking up to the blinding, merciless glare of the morning sun felt like a cruel joke. I bolted upright, the residual adrenaline of the previous night still humming in my veins. The distant shouts of overseers and passersby echoed through the barracks. Panic spiked as I glanced at the small, iron-framed clock on the wall: I had less than an hour to get dressed, slip past the patrol lines, and report to my morning duties in the estate's sprawling backyard.

I rushed through a hasty routine, pulling my rough tunic over my head and letting my thick, jet-black hair tumble down my back. Slipping out into the crisp autumn air, I grabbed a heavy wooden broom and marched straight to the manor’s expansive rear gardens. The ground was blanketed in a golden sea of crisp, fallen leaves.

As I swept, my gaze drifted past the manicured hedges, and my breath caught. Nestled at the edge of the gardens was a breathtaking, crystal-clear lake. It looked fiercely cared for—loved, even—a stark contrast to the brutal stone slave quarters. Dozens of exotic, expensive-looking fish glided effortlessly through the water, completely untroubled by the cruel hierarchy of the world above them.

Must be nice, I thought bitterly, staring down at my blistered palms. To just swim through life without a care.

Shaking my head to clear away the dark thoughts, I gripped the broom tighter and dove back into my work. Lost deep in my spiraling thoughts, I didn't hear the hurried patter of footsteps until it was too late.

Thud.

Something small and solid collided squarely with my side, sending us both sprawling onto the grass.

"Oof—!"

I gasped, dropping the broom as I scrambled back onto my knees. I looked up, expecting the sharp boot of a guard or the biting snarl of an overseer, but instead found myself staring at a tiny, round-faced boy. Tears welled up in his big, glassy eyes, his lower lip trembling violently.

My heart instantly melted. Any lingering panic evaporated, replaced by maternal instinct.

"Oh, hey—hey, I am so sorry! Please don't cry," I whispered frantically, dropping to my knees. I quickly wiped my hands on my apron and leaned down to his level. "Shh, it's okay. I'm sorry, please don't cry, okay?"

I gathered the small boy into my arms, pulling him gently against my chest. He buried his tear-streaked face into my tunic, letting out a soft, pathetic whimper. That was when I saw it: a nasty, raw scrape across his left knee, oozing a thin line of bright red blood.

Without a second thought, I tore a neat strip of fabric from the hem of my tunic. With practiced gentleness, I wrapped it tightly around his wound to stem the bleeding. The boy went completely still, his small fingers clutching my shirt as he stared up at me with wide, unblinking eyes.

I finished tying the makeshift bandage and smiled down at him softly. "There. All better. Does it still hurt, sweetie?"

The little boy sniffled, blinking up at me as if I had hung the stars in the sky. He tilted his head, his tiny nose twitching.

"Are you an angel?" he whispered, his voice laced with absolute awe. "You're so pretty... Will you be my Luna?"

I burst into a sudden, bright laugh, the sound catching the autumn breeze. Heat rushed to my cheeks, turning my freckled skin a warm pink at the sheer, innocent boldness of the compliment.

"Your Luna? Oh, little one, I think you've got—"

I stopped dead. My breath caught in my throat as I finally took a closer look at him. I registered the tiny, slightly elongated canines peeking over his lower lip. I noticed the subtle, shifting gold flecks in his wide irises.

He wasn't human.

A cold spike of fear pierced my chest. The realization washed over me like a bucket of freezing water—this wasn't just any child. This was a young werewolf. But looking down into his face, I couldn't find it in myself to pull away. His tiny hands reached up, his little fingers gently brushing against my cheek, tracing the unique contrast of my eyes.

He gasped softly, marveling at my heterochromia—my left eye a cool, solid gray, and my right a mesmerizing blue-gray.

"Your eyes are magic," he breathed, completely transfixed.

I chuckled softly, scooping the little boy up into my arms and setting him safely on a smooth stone ledge. "I'm Seraphina," I said warmly, smoothing down his tousled hair. "What's your name, little guy?"

"I'm Milo," he pouted, crossing his chubby arms over his chest. "And I'm not a little guy, I'm five years old!"

I giggled, pressing a playful kiss to his chubby cheek that made him squeal with delight. "Alright, Captain Milo. Let Auntie Seraphina finish sweeping up these leaves real quick, and then we can play, okay?"

"Okay!" he nodded eagerly, kicking his short legs against the stone.

I hurried back to my broom, finishing the yard with a newfound lightness in my step. True to my word, once the leaves were piled, I returned to Milo. We spent the next hour playing harmless games in the quiet corners of the garden, the usual oppressive dread of the estate fading under his infectious laughter.

But time moves too fast when you're momentarily happy. Before I knew it, the afternoon sun had dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in violent shades of bruised purple and fiery orange.

"We should probably get you back inside, Milo," I said gently, offering him a hand. "Your parents are probably looking everywhere for you."

"Okay," he agreed sleepily, rubbing his eyes.

I picked him up, resting him comfortably against my hip as we walked toward the grand back entrance of the manor. But the moment the heavy oak doors swung open, the warmth drained from the room.

Before I could even take a step inside, Milo was violently snatched from my arms.

I stumbled back, gasping in shock. A towering, immaculately dressed wolf woman cradled Milo tightly against her chest, her face twisted in a mask of absolute fury and panic. She checked him over frantically, her claws digging anxiously into his shoulders to ensure he wasn't harmed.

"Milo! Oh, my sweet boy, what happened to you?" she cried, her voice trembling with protective rage.

Before I could open my mouth to explain—to tell her that he had fallen and I had only patched him up—she spun around, her golden eyes locking onto me with pure, unadulterated venom.

"Guards!" she shrieked, her voice echoing off the high stone ceilings. "Seize her! This human scum tried to kidnap and murder our pack's future Alpha!"

The words hit me like a physical blow.

Future Alpha.

Blood rushed violently in my ears. Panic seized my limbs, rooting my boots to the polished marble floor. I tried to scream, to defend myself, to utter a single syllable—anything—to explain that I had only helped him. But my body refused to obey. I was trapped in a waking nightmare.

I looked desperately at Milo, who was now waking up groggily in his mother's arms, completely oblivious to the lethal chaos swirling around him.

Just as I found the breath to force words past my lips, a terrifying, bone-deep growl shook the hall.

The crowd of passing guards parted instantly. A towering, broad-shouldered Alpha strode forward, his aura so crushing and dominant that the air itself seemed to grow heavy. He rushed to the Luna’s side, wrapping his massive, possessive arms around her waist, pressing her and the boy close to his chest.

At the sight of them together—a picture of royal, untouchable pack perfection—a sharp, inexplicable ache bloomed in my chest. I pushed the strange feeling down, desperate to focus on survival.

The Alpha buried his face into the curve of the Luna’s neck, inhaling deeply. Suddenly, his head snapped up. His eyes, burning with a lethal amber fire, locked directly onto me.

A menacing, guttural snarl vibrated in his throat. He took a predatory step forward, pointing a heavy finger straight at my chest, and let out a word that made the entire room freeze:

"Mate."

Gasps of absolute shock erupted from the surrounding guards and courtiers. Confusion crashed over the room in heavy waves. The Alpha—Alpha Elliot Vance of the powerful Bluecoat Pack—had just locked eyes with a filthy, low-ranking human scullery maid and claimed her as his destined mate.

Before I could even process the impossible reality of the word, two heavy-handed guards grabbed my arms, pinning me painfully behind my back.

"What's your name, human?" Alpha Elliot demanded, his voice a lethal, vibrating growl that promised violence.

Terror paralyzed my vocal cords. I swallowed hard, my voice shaking so badly it was barely a whisper. "I... I'm Seraphina."

"Full name," he snarled, tightening his grip on the Luna as if trying to wash away the scent of me.

I flinched, tears stinging the corners of my mismatched eyes. "I'm... Seraphina Rossi."

The silence in the grand hall was absolute. Alpha Elliot stared down at me, his face twisting through a horrific mixture of disgust, fury, and rejection. The bond screaming in the back of his mind seemed to infuriate him beyond reason. He straightened his posture, puffing out his chest so the entire pack could hear his decree.

"I, Alpha Elliot Vance of the Bluecoat Pack, reject you, Seraphina Rossi, as my mate and Luna."

The words struck me like a physical blade driven straight through my ribs. Instantly, my chest felt as though it had been violently ripped open and gutted from the inside out. The agony was blinding—a white-hot, suffocating pain unlike anything I had ever experienced in my entire life. Every breath felt like inhaling crushed glass.

Yet, looking out at the sea of snickering guards and judgmental faces, a fierce, desperate pride locked into place. I refuse to break in front of them.

Before my conscious mind could even process what was happening, my mouth moved on pure, agonizing instinct.

"I, Seraphina Rossi, accept your rejection."

The words acted as an invisible executioner’s axe.

Gasps echoed through the hall. Across from me, Alpha Elliot suddenly staggered backward, clutching his own chest as if a physical wound had mirrored mine. He sucked in massive, ragged breaths, his knees buckling slightly before he managed to force himself upright, his face pale and sweating.

I didn't move. I couldn't. I was trapped in the wreckage of a shattered bond.

Then, heavy footsteps approached. A hand caught me brutally by the throat, cutting off my air supply. I was jerked upward and met with the blazing, hateful glare of the Luna. With a disgusted sneer, she shoved me backward, sending me crashing hard against the unforgiving stone floor.

"From this moment on," the Luna announced, her voice dripping with venom as she glared down at my trembling, bruised frame, "Seraphina Rossi and anyone connected to her are officially banished from the Bluecoat Pack."

Fear clawed at my throat as I looked up from the floor, hearing fresh gasps ripple through the crowd.

She wasn't just throwing me out into the wilderness. She wanted to destroy everything I cared about.

"Not only will she be stripped of what little she has and sold off as a slave at the upcoming national wolf meeting in eight lunar days, but anyone associated with her will share her exact fate. Their association with this traitor makes them just as guilty."

My breath hitched violently. No.

As the guards moved in to drag me away toward the dark dungeons, a suffocating wave of guilt crashed over me. Because of a simple, innocent act of kindness in a harsh world, anyone who had ever shown me warmth or friendship was now doomed to be auctioned off right alongside me.
