Bound in Black Magic An enslaved human. A broken Alpha King. And a past life wrapped in blood and dark sorcery. Brutalized and trapped in a ruthless kingdom, she never expected to feel an undeniable pull toward the Alpha King—nor did she expect him to violently reject it, still haunted by the murder of his former mate. But when a mysterious witch uncovers a chilling truth, everything shatters: she is the reincarnation of the luna's killer, reborn without her memories. When her memories finally flood back, guilt forces her to run. Meanwhile, the king’s cunning right-hand man poisons his mind with suspicion. Catching her practicing forbidden black magic—the very weapon that took his mate—the blindfolded king banishes her to the shadows as a hated outcast. He thinks he has punished his enemy. In reality, he has just played right into the hands of the true monster: a half-wolf, half-witch hybrid who murdered the former luna to hide their affair and framed an innocent best friend to take the fall. Now, time is running out. To survive a web of deceit older than their hatred, the outcast girl and the grieving king must unmask the ultimate betrayal before the darkness consumes them both.

Chapter 1: Chains of the Pure-Blood

The screams always started the same way—sharp, sudden, and tearing through the dark.

I bolted upright, gasping for air as the stale smell of sweat, rust, and damp stone filled my lungs. Sunlight was already bleeding thinly through the high, iron-barred slits of the barracks window. Too late. Panic surged, cold and sharp, clawing at my throat. If the guards caught me sleeping past dawn, the punishment wouldn't just be a bruised face or a docked ration. It would be the branding iron—or worse, being hauled off to the dark pits from which no human ever returned.

I scrambled off my thin, filthy pallet, my bare feet hitting the freezing stone floor, and bolted toward the heavy timber exit. But as I rushed into the main corridor, a heavy, suffocating pressure stopped me dead in my tracks.

Crack.

A searing, blinding sting exploded across my left cheek. The brutal impact whipped my head sideways, sending me crashing hard against the rough stone wall. My ears rang with a loud, high-pitched whine, and hot, stinging tears brimmed instantly in my eyes. I bit down hard on my tongue, tasting the metallic, copper tang of blood, desperately swallowing the sob before it could escape my lips. In this world, crying out was a luxury we couldn't afford.

"Move it, human," a gravelly, snarling voice barked from above me.

I didn't dare look up. I didn't need to. I already recognized the scent before I even saw the heavy, leather-bound boots: cold pine, raw meat, and absolute, crushing power.

This was the brutal reality we were born into. Ever since the wolves took over, hunting humanity to the edge of extinction, our lives had been reduced to a nightmare. Under the iron-fisted rule of Marek Novada, a terrifying king who had lived for over a century, human existence wasn't about living. It was about surviving the next breath.

Slavery was all we knew. We were property, nothing more. Some were chained to massive industrial machines in dark, underground factories where the air tasted like ash and iron; others were kept as playthings in the grand wings of the estate; and the rest of us were treated like disposable workers, used until our bones cracked and discarded when we stopped breathing.

"Get up, useless trash," the guard growled, kicking my ankle with enough force to send a fresh wave of blinding agony shooting up my spine.

I forced my shaking legs to stand, my fingers curling into tight fists against my ragged tunic.

With a cold sneer, the guard turned and walked away, expecting me to follow closely behind. I scrambled up, keeping my head bowed as we wound through the dark, intimidating stone halls of the lord’s manor until we reached the massive kitchens.

The heat inside hit me like a physical wall. The air was thick with choking smoke, the steam of boiling pots, and the heavy, sickening smell of roasted meat. Dozens of human slaves rushed around like trapped animals, hauling massive sacks of flour, carrying heavy iron trays, and dodging the giant wolf guards who watched from elevated platforms like hawks ready to strike.

I stood there frozen for a moment, my mind spinning from the chaotic scale of the room, when a heavy shove caught me completely off guard from behind.

I stumbled hard, my knees crashing painfully against the unforgiving stone floor. The guard laughed—a cruel, mocking sound that echoed off the masonry—before walking off into the bustling crowd. Heat rushed to my cheeks, burning hot and fierce. I brushed the soot and dirt from my clothes, blinking back tears of humiliation as I realized how many pairs of eyes were watching me.

Then, a warm, steady hand touched my shoulder.

I flinched violently, bracing myself for another blow, but looked up into the bright, kind eyes of a tall girl with a reassuring, disarming smile.

"Hey, easy," she whispered, keeping her hands visible and offering me a calloused palm. "I'm Eleanore. Don't mind that bastard. We still don't know what crawled up his ass and died."

She let out a soft, melodic laugh that instantly eased the suffocating tightness in my chest. A small, grateful smile broke across my face, and I took her hand, letting her pull me firmly to my feet.

Before I could answer her, a thunderous voice shook the heavy copper pots hanging from the ceiling.

"Quit diddly-daddling, you lazy pieces of garbage! Get to work!"

The head chef—a towering, muscular female wolf with fierce silver hair tied back in a tight braid and a permanent, dangerous scowl—barked across the room. She brandished an iron ladle like a sword, her golden eyes sweeping over us like a predator sizing up its prey.

Eleanore shot me a quick, knowing look, her eyes flashing with quiet defiance. "Come on," she muttered, shoving a heavy wooden crate of mud-caked root vegetables toward my station. "Welcome to hell. Let's make it through another day."

I grabbed the wooden crate, the rough bark biting into my palms, and dragged it toward the prep table. As I picked up a dull knife and began peeling the stubborn skin off the vegetables, the kitchen blurred into a frantic rhythm of smoke, shouting, and sweat.

Hours bled together in an endless cycle of exhaustion. My hands grew blistered and raw from the cold water and rough timber, my back ached from the relentless heat of the hearths, and the constant threat of the guards hung in the air like a thick fog. We didn't talk. We didn't stop moving. One mistake meant a severe beating—or worse.

Around us, the chaotic noise of the kitchen played on without mercy. Clanging iron, sputtering grease, and the sharp, rhythmic thud of cleavers filled every corner of the room. I focused entirely on the task in front of me, keeping my head down and burying my racing thoughts. Yet, every time a wolf guard walked past our station, my muscles instinctively coiled, ready for a blow that thankfully didn't come.

Eleanore worked right beside me, her hands moving with a fast, practiced speed that showed she had been doing this for a long time. She didn't complain, and she didn't look for pity. In this place, showing weakness was dangerous—a rule every living slave learned within their first week behind the manor's stone walls.

As the afternoon sun beat down against the high, grease-stained windows, the noise in the room shifted slightly. The heavy footsteps of high-ranking guards and visiting captains echoed from the hallway outside, signaling preparation for the evening feast. The tension in the kitchen skyrocketed instantly. The head chef’s barks turned sharper, her iron ladle striking against a metal table to demand absolute perfection from the exhausted human hands scrambling to meet her impossible standards.

I wiped a bead of salty sweat from my forehead with the back of my forearm, leaving a streak of soot across my skin. My stomach churned with hunger and fatigue as I loaded the final batch of prepped vegetables onto a wooden tray.

Just as I turned back to clear the prep station, Eleanore nudged my elbow. She didn't look up from her knife, but her voice dropped to a barely perceptible whisper.

"Tonight, when the shift changes and the guards switch patrols," she murmured, her fingers deftly slicing through a root, "meet me by the pantry doors. Someone left a basket of scraps unattended, and if we're quick, we might be able to grab some extra bread before the night lockdown begins."

I gave a tiny, almost imperceptible nod, keeping my eyes fixed on the wooden board in front of me. The hours dragged on, every tick of the grand clock echoing the heavy weight of our captivity, until the iron bells finally rang out to signal the end of the evening service. As the other slaves began filing out toward the dark, narrow corridors leading back to the barracks, I lingered near the shadowy archway of the pantry, my heart pounding against my ribs as I waited for Eleanore to appear in the dim torchlight.

The shadows in the pantry alcove stretched long and thick, smelling faintly of stale flour, vinegar, and old wood. I pressed my back against the rough stone wall, trying to control the ragged rhythm of my breathing. Every passing echo in the stone corridor sounded like heavy paws on the flagstones, sending spikes of pure terror straight to my chest.

If a night patrol caught me lurking here past curfew, the excuse of gathering scraps wouldn't save me. They didn't need a reason to punish a human; cruelty was their default.

A soft rustle of fabric broke the silence.

I whipped my head around, my fists clenching defensively, but relaxed instantly as familiar figures slipped out of the darkness. Eleanore and Maria stepped into the faint amber glow of a wall sconce, both of them smudged with soot and dust, their eyes sharp and alert.

Tucked securely under Eleanore's arm was a small, crudely bound bundle wrapped in coarse canvas.

"Took you long enough," Eleanore whispered, a faint, teasing smirk touching the corners of her lips to cut through the heavy tension. "I was starting to think you chickened out and went back to your pallet."

"I didn't go anywhere," I whispered back, my voice barely carrying over the distant howling of the wind outside the high manor windows. "What's that?" I nodded toward the canvas bundle under her arm.

Eleanore glanced down, her expression softening just a fraction. She stepped closer, pressing her back against the wall beside me so we were hidden from the open archway, while Maria took a quiet stance to watch the corridor.

"Just a couple of hard rolls I managed to stash away from the back of the pantry," Eleanore murmured quietly, carefully peeling back a corner of the rough canvas. "Thought we could use a minute to actually breathe without an overseer screaming down our necks."

Maria stepped in close, leaning her shoulder against the stone wall next to us. She reached into the bundle, breaking off a piece of the bread and handing it to me with a small, cautious nod.

"I'm Maria, by the way," she said softly, her voice low and even. "I've been working the wash-tubs down in the south wing for about a year now. Saw you take that shove from the guard earlier today. Not many people manage to stand back up without crying out on their first day."

I took the piece of bread, letting out a quiet breath as my fingers brushed hers. I instinctively tucked a loose lock of my jet-black hair behind my ear, letting them see my face clearly in the amber glow. Standing at five-foot-six, my curvy frame—highlighted by thick, muscular thighs from hauling heavy laundry tubs and a soft, slightly pudgy belly beneath my rough tunic—was a stark contrast to the sharp, starved angles of most slaves in the estate. Across my sun-kissed cheeks danced a constellation of natural freckles, framing my most striking feature: my heterochromia. My left eye was a cool, solid gray, while my right was a mesmerizing blue-gray.

"I'm Seraphina," I murmured, offering a small, tired smile as I looked between them. "And I'm just trying not to get myself killed. Everything back in the barracks... and then the kitchens... it's just so much all at once."

Eleanore offered a sympathetic look, her gaze briefly catching on my unique eyes before she nodded. "It gets easier to block out the noise, Seraphina, even if the work doesn't. We've all been right where you are. Nobody lasts long here if they try to keep their head down and pretend they're completely alone."

Maria nodded in agreement, crossing her arms over her chest. "Exactly. We don't need grand promises or anything like that. But in a place where the masters treat us like nothing more than property, knowing someone has your back when things go sideways... that matters."

The dry, bland taste of wheat barely registered on my tongue, but the simple gesture—three human beings sharing a quiet corner away from the wolves—grounded me in a way I hadn't expected. The crushing weight of the day didn't vanish, but the panic in my chest finally began to ease.

I swallowed the bite of bread, looking from Eleanore to Maria. "Thanks," I whispered, the word carrying more weight than I realized. "I'm glad I bumped into you both."

Before either of them could reply, a heavy, deafening thud echoed down the stone hallway, followed immediately by the unmistakable, bone-chilling sound of razor-sharp claws clicking against the flagstones.

Clack. Clack. Clack.

The temperature in the alcove seemed to plummet instantly.

"Well, well, well. What do we have here?" a deep, gravelly snarl purred from the darkness of the archway.

A massive wolf guard stepped into the dim light, towering over us with broad shoulders and a cruel, jagged scar running down his snout. His yellow eyes locked straight onto the open canvas bundle of bread in Eleanore's hands, then flicked up to my mismatched gray and blue-gray eyes. A slow, predatory grin spread across his jaws, revealing rows of sharp, gleaming teeth.

"Late-night snacking on Master's property," the guard growled, his hand dropping menacingly to the heavy iron baton at his hip. "You three really thought you could steal from the larder and get away with it?"
