Chapter 1

Dean Russo is the Alpha of our pack.

One day, his gaming mate decided to end things, and that mate was none other than me, his Beta.

Recently, a new competitive web game called "Moonlit Shadow Wolf" swept through our pack like wildfire. Its fast-paced battles and dazzling visuals made it an instant sensation.

I, too, was completely hooked and quickly joined the ranks of its many passionate players.

As the Moonlight Festival drew near, the game introduced a special event where couples could team up to complete quests and unlock exclusive rewards.

As a solo player, finding a mate felt impossible. However, the rewards were simply too good to pass up.

With that in mind, I decided to post a message in the game lobby to see if I could find someone to team up with temporarily.

The moment I hit send, my inbox was flooded with a rush of messages.

A player named "Solitary Sailor" immediately caught my eye.

I couldn't tell if his profile photo was actually him, but the sharp jawline spoke volumes about his good looks. Not to mention, in the bottom right of the photo was also a well-defined hand holding a glass cup.

Prominent veins traced the back of the hand, and a sleek, expensive-looking watch rested on the left wrist.

That watch looked eerily familiar.

This man seemed to be both handsome and well-off. How perfect.

Without hesitation, I opened his profile, and to my surprise, he was already a Level 10 player.

I quietly congratulated myself again for having such good judgment.

In truth, romance wasn't on my mind. I just wanted a rich mate to show off in the game lobby.

"Hey, are you looking for a mate?" I messaged him.

He replied shortly after, "Yeah."

I explained that I was only looking for someone to team up with during the Moonlight Festival quest. Once the event ended, we'd part ways.

The man didn't respond for quite some time. But just as I was starting to think he'd lost interest, he finally replied, "Deal."

Just like that, we became mates in the game.

Throughout our time together, Solitary Sailor helped me succeed in matches and missions. Without any hesitation, he even passed all his rewards and gear to me.

Not only was he rich, but his gaming skills were impressive too. Thanks to him backing me up, my rank soared in no time.

Gradually, I began to feel hesitant about ending our partnership. After all, it was rare to find such a talented player.

On the event's last day, I asked if he wanted to team up again, and he said yes without hesitation. From there, our in-game partnership just kept going.

Every night, we teamed up to play, and on special occasions, he would surprise me with skins and gear. It almost felt like we were a real couple.

"Kylie Everest, what are you thinking?" I scolded myself. "You don't even know his real name or what he looks like. You can't start catching feelings just because he's been helping you through the game."

I used to wonder what kind of person Solitary Sailor was in real life.

But I never imagined I'd find out so soon.

One day, while I was delivering some documents to Dean's office, I caught a glimpse of his phone.

I froze in shock.

His screen showed the game interface of "Moonlit Shadow Wolf," with the username "Solitary Sailor" clearly visible in the upper-left corner.

Suddenly, it all made sense. The watch on his profile photo was an exact match to the one Dean wore every day.

My mysterious in-game mate had been Dean this entire time.

This realization hit me like a jolt of electricity, and my face turned pale as I stumbled out of the office.

If Dean ever found out that his in-game mate was actually his Beta, I'd never be able to stay in this pack again.

Once I got home, I grabbed my phone, ready to send Dean a breakup message. But the moment I entered the game lobby, a strange feeling of unease settled over me.

There were way more players than usual in the lobby, and as soon as I logged in, everyone's attention shifted to me.

Before I could even react, a flood of notifications appeared.

"Solitary Sailor sent 9,999 roses to Celeste Rain."

"Solitary Sailor sent 9,999 dazzling fireworks to Celeste Rain."

"Solitary Sailor sent 9,999 luxury yachts to Celeste Rain."

The screen exploded with a flood of special effects.

What on earth was happening?

The game lobby erupted in chaos.

"Whoa, who's this rich guy? Those gifts must be worth a fortune!"

"Isn't Solitary Sailor always at the forefront of the leaderboard? Who knew he was both a top player and filthy rich?"

"How sweet! Celeste Rain, you'd better say yes to him!"

Messages filled with awe and excitement poured in, but they only made my head spin. Then, before I could even make sense of it all, Solitary Sailor sent me a private message.

"Do you like the gifts?"

Stunned, I replied with just one word, "Yeah."

Almost immediately, he sent a flood of heartfelt texts, and it all built up to one simple question.

"I like you. Will you be my actual mate?"

I was too stunned to respond.

Our Alpha wants to see you."The second those words left his mouth, I knew exactly who he meant—it was Garrett, the Alpha of the Silverfang Pack. He'd been nursing a grudge ever since Dean had publicly humiliated him.The three werewolves before me were imposing, and their muscular frames towered over me. They had me restrained before I could even move. Still, I shifted into my werewolf form and instinctively tried to fight back. But even as a Beta, I was no match for their numbers. Within moments, I'd been completely pinned down.Upon realizing that there was no chance of winning, I stopped resisting and let them drag me along. As I was forced into the car,

Dean's flawless reasoning left me completely at a loss for words. What could I even say? There was a reason he was an Alpha, after all.Just as I was silently applauding his sharp mind, I caught sight of the redness in his eyes. What was happening? Before I could even react, Dean suddenly reached for my hand. He looked like a helpless puppy silently begging me not to walk away.Struggling to hold back tears, he said, "I never meant to dig into who you were. Please don't leave me."I blinked in confusion. Had I said something?Still, it surprised me that Dean didn't get angry about my secret and had even gone out of his way to protect me. The heavy weight in my chest finally started to ease. Nonetheless, seeing the pitiful look on his face still shattered me. I reached for Dean's hand, instinctively wanting to comfort him. "Okay, okay. We're not breaking up. I promise." I pulled him into a hug and ran my fingers through his hair.Dean froze for a moment. Then, after a beat,

A few days later, the day of our business trip to meet the Silverfang Pack finally came.I'd been working overtime all week to make sure everything went off without a hitch. That day, I was the only one Dean brought with him.The negotiations went smoothly. However, during dinner with the Silverfang Pack's Alpha—Garrett Blackwood—things quickly took an uneasy turn. After the meal, he leaned in, the scent of alcohol strong on his breath. "You've had your fair share of drinks tonight… How about I take you home?"As Garrett spoke, he reached out with a sleazy grin, trying to slip his arm around my waist.I forced a polite smile and dodged his hand. "It's okay, Alpha Garrett. I'll just take a cab home."His expression darkened. "It's not safe for a she-wolf like you to be out alone this late. What if you cross paths with someone dangerous?"That was rich coming from the actual dangerous werewolf here.Unwilling to give up, Garrett pressed on and said, "If you don't let me give you

Though my heart skipped a beat, I quickly forced out a reply, saying, "Yeah, it's a pretty popular game. Lots of werewolves in the pack play it."Since it was a mainstream game, there was nothing unusual about me playing it too. With countless players online, there was no chance he'd associate me with "Celeste Rain."After a pause, Dean thoughtfully asked, "What's your game ID?"My hand trembled slightly as I gripped my mouse. My mind raced, and I blurted out a random username.Just as Dean was about to press me further, I stepped in to steer the conversation. I had to be careful not to expose myself. "What about you, Alpha Dean? Are you into this game as well?" I asked.Dean looked slightly embarrassed. He cleared his throat as a faint blush spread across his cheeks. "Of course not. I'd never waste time on such a childish game. It's my little sister who's into it. I was just asking for her."It was hard to believe that the proud, aloof Alpha in front of me was the same werewolf

"But we agreed not to meet in real life." I replied.Dean was a little hurt. "I'm sorry, but I really want to see you. Can you give me a chance?" he messaged. It wasn't that I didn't want to meet him—it was that we just couldn't. The very thought of his grumpy face at work was enough to unsettle me.If Dean ever found out that his Beta was actually his online girlfriend, I was certain he'd take serious action against me. After all, I knew all his embarrassing little secrets.Dean, however, refused to give up. He kept pushing to meet in person and even offered to pay just for a chance to see me.Frustrated and overwhelmed, I finally told him that we should break up. At the same time, I called it quits on our gaming partnership.Instantly, the whole gaming community went wild. The news of Solitary Sailor and Celeste Rain breaking up blew up in the chat. Many players couldn't help but feel sorry."No way! When Solitary Sailor sent those fireworks, I genuinely believed they'd be

To be honest, I felt a little bad for Dean. Why did he have to pour all his money into the game? If he liked me that much, couldn't he have just given me the money instead of blowing it all on virtual gifts?Of course, I didn't say any of that. Instead, I politely turned him down. "I'm sorry, but we haven't even met in real life. How can you be so sure about your feelings for me?"Dean answered, "Do you need a reason to love someone?""I'm not looking for a relationship," I replied. After waiting a moment, he sent another message. "Can you at least give me a chance to pursue you?"If it had been someone else, maybe I would've considered it. But this was Dean Russo—the Alpha of our pack.In the end, I didn't give him a clear answer, but I didn't mention anything about ending things either. So, just like that, his confession died on an awkward note.Afterward, we played together less and less. Most of the time, I found myself deliberately avoiding him too.The gaming world had l
