ELYSIA

The sound of keys jangling against the bars reached my ears, but I didn’t even look. It was probably the guards coming to get me for execution. But the voice that followed made me pause.

“Mel?”

My head snapped up, surprise etched across my face as I rushed toward the cell gate. I had taken a gamble and told Van, when he confronted me about all that I had done, that Mel wasn’t involved. I told him that I had used Mel; I took the fall, praying the gamble would work, but a big part of me didn’t believe it would.

I had worked too hard to just let everything be in vain, and I needed to keep the promise I made to my mother. So I exonerated Mel to Van, so Mel could help me escape. He needed to be free, so I had to make him a victim to keep their trust.

But a part of me feared he would be too spooked and run away the moment I cleared his name.

My eyes were puffy and sore from crying all night as I looked behind him, expecting a guard or someone, but there was no one. Gettin

  • Bound to the Capo   EPILOGUE

VAL THREE HOURS LATER Makena’s grip tightened on mine as we walked into the crown room. And I couldn’t meet the eyes of the elders or my father, whom we had kept waiting for over two hours, as the shower had taken far longer than expected. We took our seats, and greetings were exchanged. After the pleasantries, my father told us that they had received numerous reports this morning that every wolf who turned eighteen after midnight had recognized their mate. “What?” “The mate bond is back, son,” my father said, and Makena and I looked at each other in disbelief. Marcus spoke next. He said we had done it; we had broken the curse. However, we didn’t understand how and couldn't dwell on it, as we were already late for my official appointment as the Capo. But just as we all got up to head to where the seating would take place, the lights in the room went out, and loud gasps echoed through the room before everything fell silent. I turned to my left to find Makena’s expression

  • Bound to the Capo   CHAPTER 104: BECOMING ONE

MAKENA My hands flew in the air as my husband carried me over the threshold to our suite, a flood of emotions coursing through me in a maddening haze of pure bliss. “I love you, Mrs. Di Corvo,” he whispered, pinning me against the wall before connecting our lips in a fiery kiss, which I returned with equal fervor, my arms wrapping around his neck and pulling him even closer as our tongues tangled. Tugging my lower lip between his teeth, he coaxed a melty moan from my lips, and my head fell back, my eyes fluttering shut as his soft lips nibbled on the sensitive skin on my neck, filling me with a growing need. I started working on the buttons of his shirt, which he shrugged off in equal haste, before helping me out of my gown, which turned from the most precious fabric to an obstacle. “Ah!” Another strangled moan tore from my lips as Val pressed me against the wall and nuzzled my skin. A shudder ran through me as his lips traveled from my shoulder and over my chest before cupping m

SIX DAYS LATER VAL I felt a hand on my shoulder and turned to see Kian, my best man, dashing in a navy tuxedo. After everything that happened with Mel, I asked Kian to be my best man, and he accepted. Something tugged at my heart at the thought of Mel. I loved him, and his betrayal didn’t just break my heart; it shattered me to my core. It felt like I was being gutted alive all over again; my heart was bleeding, and a part of me feared it might never fully heal. But I shook my head, not wanting to go there. I wouldn’t let it ruin my special day. I was finally about to say. “I do” to the woman of my dreams. Living apart had been a challenge, especially since we had spent so much time together while we were on the run, and I smiled at the memory. Our life out there was full of pain and misery, but it was a road destined for us to travel. If everything hadn’t happened, I never would have met her. I wouldn’t be marrying her today. “You look handsome,” Kian said, and I thanked him

  • Bound to the Capo   CHAPTER 102: A MASSACRE

THIRD-PARTY POVMARTINEZ TERRITORY Pedro had just sat down at the head of the dining table when his wife reached for his hand. Her touch was gentle, but it wasn’t enough to pull him back from the thoughts that ravaged his mind. Mrs. Martinez looked at her husband with a heart weighed down by concern. She had watched him unravel quietly since the news of Val Di Corvo being alive reached them. Pedro hadn’t been able to grasp it. He couldn’t sleep and kept going over it again and again: the photograph Mel had shown him of Val’s lifeless, gutted body. It was Val, cut open and lifeless. There was no doubt. But now Val was not only alive but also mated to the former lover of Akira Draynen himself, Akira, who was complicit in their plan, the same woman Akira had been looking over shortly before everything fell apart between them. In fact, she was the cause of their rift. Akira had a meltdown about being unable to search for her in Pedro’s territory, and all along, she was with Val. Pedr

MAKENA I raised my head, realizing that the heart in the bucket had stopped, and just then, Emelina walked into the room. She approached the bed, and then I heard it; I heard Val’s heart beating in his chest. Sitting up, tears blurred my vision before a sob escaped my mouth. It worked. It really worked. Brushing his hair back with trembling fingers, I softly called his name. But the sound died in my throat, and I froze as his face suddenly contorted in pain. “What’s happening to him?” I asked Emelina as he began writhing in the bed, tears leaking from his eyes, but she held out her hand, gesturing for me to move away from him. I didn’t budge; he was clearly in pain, and I couldn’t leave him. “Why is he doing this? What’s happening to him?” I began again, reaching for his hand, but a startled scream tore through my chest as he let out a terrifying growl. His eyes snapped open, and my lips parted to assure him that it was okay, but he started growling before jumping off the bed. I

  • Bound to the Capo   CHAPTER 100: BETRAYED

MAKENA “I love you,” I muttered, sitting on Val’s lap before wrapping my arms around his neck. Val sent for me yesterday morning, and I arrived last night. His father was taking him to a witch who was going to put his heart back. He had taken a secret trip to her, and Val told me that the witch even mentioned something about a traitor, but when his father tried to find out what she was talking about, she told him to bring Val. I could see that he was worried about this procedure, as none of us had ever heard of someone’s heart being put back. I was just as terrified, and the fact that I couldn’t go with my mate made things even harder and scarier. If something went wrong, I’d be stuck here waiting, while he’d be out there without me. His father said it would take three days for him to wake up once it was done, and when he did, he would have his Lycan again. Val’s eyes found mine, and he asked if he should go through with it; he said if I said no, he wouldn’t do it. And the gods
