My legs burned as I ran.

Branches scraped my arms, thorns tugged at my clothes, but I didn’t slow down. I kept glancing over my shoulder, half-expecting to see Jax behind me. And the worst part was that he wasn’t there.

If he had been behind me, I think I would’ve felt safer.

The thought made no sense, but nothing about tonight did.

All I could think about was Dean telling Jax to kill me. My mind still hadn’t caught up to the fact that he had ordered my death. That he had meant it.

I ran until the forest thinned and the ground beneath my feet turned uneven. My lungs screamed for air, and when I finally stopped, I bent over, gasping. My hands shook as I straightened.

That was when I realized I had no idea where I was.

The trees had given way to abandoned houses, their walls cracked and swallowed by vines. The place felt wrong. It was too quiet, too forgotten.
