MasukCHAPTER 7
RAIN ANDREA RIVERTON
My eyes widened, fear and anxiety as a blaring green filled my vision. He stood and turned to me. I instantly bolted, running the same way I had come.
Dark shadows whipped out from him, wrapping around my foot as I fell to the ground with a loud thud.
Fuck! Fuck!
I kicked and tried to escape its hold. It was too strong. Too freaking tight.
He stalked towards me, long legs taking one stride after another. Blood still dripped from the hand he caught my dagger with, staining the brown ground of the rooftop, like he didn't have a care in the world.
Pulling my other dagger from my boot, I tried to cut into the shadows holding me. How could one even cut into shadows? The blade was useless against them. With every swipe, the part the blade touched disappeared only to come back whole in less than a second.
It was too late. His boots were now before me. I tried moving away, tried fighting with those demonic things on my boots. Before I could think of an escape plan, cold hands gripped my waist, pulling me upwards. My heart sank in my chest.
My eyes flared from red to a bright and glowing green the minute he turned me over, moving with a speed I didn’t think was humanly possible towards the part of the rooftop he was in earlier.
My screaming was the only thing I could hear as he forced my feet to the small parapet that would lead anyone who fell off it to their deaths. Half my body was off it, and only my leg had little to no balance on the small solid edge of the rooftop.
My fingers flared as they grabbed his black shirt for balance. I was sure my nails clawed his bare chest too, but I didn’t care. The only thing that kept me from falling were his five fingers on my lower back.
Harsh air blew past me, sending the cover on my hair and face flying. My white hair was now visible and flowing with the wind.
“What the fuck is wrong with you?” My words drowned in my throat when I looked down to the height we were at, my legs barely getting a foothold on the parapet. “Let me go, let me down, you monster!”
“Trying to assassinate me now, are you?” He had no expression. Nothing to show he was about to end a life as he stared down at my small frame in comparison to him.
I would die. He would never let me live. “You fucking deserve it, you jerk.”
He removed a finger from behind me. My words moved into a shrill scream “Kai!”
Lifeless. Malicious. Only four fingers were left behind me, sending shivers down my spine from their touch.
“Kai,” my voice cracked, “Stop, let me down.”
Tears stung my eyes from the harsh air, considering how high we were. The force made my hair sway with the pattern of the wind. My hands on his unbuttoned shirt tightened. The only expression in his eyes as he stared down at me was that of hate and disgust.
A little shadow whip floated towards my face, slowly touching my cheek in a soft caress. It was a complete contrast to the hate and death Kai’s stare on me had.
“Has anyone told you how beautiful your eyes are when they change to green?” He cocked his head slightly. “Fiery. Little. Thing. So fierce and yet, so damn breakable.”
“The only thing I’ll find beautiful is the look on your face when I drive my dagger through your heart.” I dug my nails into his chest, still holding on for dear life. “Because mark my words, Kai Malek. I will be the cause of your death.”
Amusement flickered in his silver eyes. “And yet, I hold your life in my hands right now. What is to say I wouldn’t drop you?”
Nothing.
My stilettos! I still had them.
I whipped my gaze to my cuff, his going to it too. Without a second thought, I let go of my right hand, bringing a piece of it out. In a split second, he grabbed my arm, twisting it away from my hand and sending the metal weapon flying to the ground.
Shit!
How pathetic would I look begging the god of death to spare my life?
“That was a thoughtless move.” His eyes narrowed as they looked over my face. “You don’t think, you act way too reckless.”
“I will kill you, I swear.”
“If you are not dead first.” His lips stretched into a smile. “Do not make promises you can't keep.”
“Let me down, and we’ll see if I—” another finger went off, making me sway a bit. A scream erupted from my throat, my fingers digging into his shirt even harder, “Kai!”
“You were saying?” His brows went up in a questioning glare. The prickles on my skin became more violent, my head aching and screaming at me to stop being so fucking stupid.
“Let me go.” The wind slashed against me, taking the words right off my throat as he retracted all fingers. My legs wobbled, eyes green and bugging as I scrabbled at his shirt but it was not enough. Still, my hands searched for balance. I didn’t feel my legs on the parapet anymore.
The wind roared past me with the fall, my hands clawed, grabbed, and swiped for anything it could hold on to. Nothing.
My eyes were the darkest shade of green and then blue as I felt the blood rush to my head. When I thought it was over, I grabbed onto something soft, hard but solid. Heck! I wasn’t sure. Tears threatened to spill from my closed eyes. He fucking pushed me off. I was going to die.
I opened my eyes, tears already rolling down either side of my cheeks as I stared up. The harsh wind made my hair sway in all directions, while the shadow that had formed a solid hand held onto me. Or did I hold onto it? I had no idea but it seemed I was doing the holding.
Kai stood in all his might and glory, arms crossed and staring into my eyes. There was no expression on his face. Like one mistake and I was going to die.
But, he didn’t care. He had no reason to.
He stared at me, slightly amused. “I think you will have the prettiest shade of pink when you are falling to your death. Shall we test that theory?”
“Why the hell are you doing this?” Memories clouded my brain. Was this my last second on earth? Would Aunt Eloise forgive me for not surviving?
“Kai, Please,”
With a smirk, he let go of his
shadows’ hold on me. Blood rushed to my head, my scream no longer my own as I fell.
CHAPTER TEN.IVY’S POVA sharp knock at the door was the only thing that saved me from the suffocating weight of Aiden’s gaze. I didn't wait for him to speak. I slipped away from the bed, my skin still prickling where he had pinned me, and heaved a silent sigh of relief. He met the guards halfway, their voices dropping into hushed, urgent tones. “An emergency assembly," Aiden said, his eyes suddenly shifting from the intense heat earlier to a cold, detached golden color. He paused at the door, his silhouette blocking the light. "Don’t play smart, Princess, I'll be back.” He left before I could even find my voiceI heaved a sigh of relief. The announcement for the emergency came before sunset. They gathered us in the central hall, rows of bodies packed tightly, shuffling feet against the stone floor, inaudible whispers travelling through the air. No one knew why we had been called, but curiosity could be seen in the eyes of everyone, tension was palpable in the air.I stood somew
CHAPTER 20RAIN ANDREA RIVERTON Prophecy or not, we were still students of Kingsbury High. It didn’t matter what we knew, or who we slapped. Attending classes was non-negotiable. Especially when they involved training. We were going to die one way or another, better to put up a good fight.“I am pleased to see some more familiar faces from the remaining aspirants the first trial didn’t wipe out.” Professor Bengal raised his chin. Hands behind the back of his robe, Dr Zia stood behind him like she always had been. “Do not rejoice yet, you still have three more to survive and win.”Three.Total of four. Not three like the Acolytes had done, Or as Aunt Eloise had in her time. Four. “Why does everything about our set have to be fucking different?” Nazeera frowned. Lix stood next to us with her Kitsune blade tugged in an X shape behind her fight gear.“Right?” Lix sneered. “It’s like they are trying to get us killed on purpose.” Professor Bengal continued. “You have today and tomorrow
CHAPTER 19RAIN ANDREA RIVERTONShivers trailed down my arms in waves as I looked up to his tall frame. There was no surviving the rage that was in his eyes.“I have to cover my fish,” Nazeera said and walked away without waiting for a response. What in the world of betrayers?“I have to go help her cover her fish.” Leon hurried along. My eyes widened at how fast they were to betray me. Leaving me with this raging monster in front of me. But I couldn’t blame them, I’d do the same.“It wasn’t intentional.” I frowned, turning fully to him.“Do you even have any idea of what you have done?” His eyes flashed.Kai was angry. Murderous even. The hallway was empty, most students were in class already and I was in danger. “I kept it safe!” I shot at him. “I tried to, at least.” He scoffed, silver eyes blaring into mine. Suddenly, his ears twitched and he grabbed my wrist forcefully. Electricity passed through my veins and straight into my brain as he pulled me towards him, my face going to
Chapter 18RAIN ANDREA RIVERTON“Ward nine, section five members have always been first in Kingsbury. So it would be absolutely wrong for me to say I am surprised.” Councilman Omen said with hands behind his back in high prestige. I could see the resemblance between Kamari and Ivella with their father. Were they as fucked up as he was too? Did he take the key? Did Nazeera take it?“Good job, once again.” His eyes scanned the hall. Our formation of three was behind our flags as always. Wards three and six stood beside us. “Your second trial comes in three days.” “Three days?” Voices were raised in protest, “We barely survived this one.” My brows squinted as I stared at Omen. Whatever his soul was made of, it was so dang obvious mine hated it. “Why the rush?” Naz mumbled beside me. “Aunt Eloise’s dairy stated we had at least two weeks to rest before the next trial.” I still didn't trust that she didn’t take the key. But I couldn’t accuse her if I didn’t witness it myself. Besides,

Fucking. Home. Well, maybe not exactly my idea of home, but at least I was back in my room. No corset. No long gowns. No cupcakes. And certainly, no Kai Malek. The slight movement from the other end of the room reminded me that Nazeera was still my roommate.Taking a deep breath, I let the sleep wash over me.***“Do you think you are worth anything? Do you think your father would find excuses to travel every time if you were so worth it?” Mother’s voice pierced through my ears, my little legs s
CHAPTER 16RAIN ANDREA RIVERTON“It’s time,” Kamari stated. Each of us on either side of our beds was already dressed in our fight gear. My hair was packed in a high ponytail and two strands braided on either of my checks. Seconds later, we were pulling up to the tower to the meet-up spot Ward nine had picked. Lix moved from one foot to another with worry in her eyes. Naz? She wore a scowl more than half the time, I could barely read a thing out of her.I cleaned my sweaty palms over my gear. I was going to survive. My name was not going to be added to the death board.“Divide yourselves into groups of five,” Kai ordered. Unlike us, he wore a round-neck black top that highlighted his muscles. Only his pants were the school fight gear. “After tonight, we will either win or barely make it out with our lives. Because then, it will be obvious what we came for. I can guarantee that Aldamar will not let anyone leave alive.”“With our number and the guards we will have to kill, would he
CHAPTER 9RAIN ANDREA RIVERTON “Okay, you’re crazy, they are crazy, everyone in this damn town is crazy.” I threw my hands up in frustration. I knew Aunt Eloise never trusted the council from day one, but freaking Hades? Hell nah. “Thank you for saving me, but I’m leaving.” She didn’t stop me, sh
“Your father and I weren’t the best of friends, I remember not wanting my sister to marry him. But if there was something I knew and was sure of, it was that your father did not want you within the walls of that school. Not even close to it. I would suspect he became a council member to keep you aw
CHAPTER 6RAIN ANDREA RIVERTON My head felt like it had been bashed with a thousand bricks and I winced at the throbbing in my temple. “You have been healed, but you would have to keep using the bandage for the next three days to help your bones heal faster.” The female voice had to be Miss Zia,
