The first thing I felt was cold.

Not from the room. From the inside. Like something had emptied me out and left nothing warm behind.

Then I heard it.

“You opened the door.”

My eyes flew open. I sat up fast, gasping, grabbing at my chest.

The mark was still there. Still glowing faintly.

I wasn’t falling anymore. I wasn’t trapped in the dark place under the tower.

I was in my bed. Blankets twisted. Sweat soaked through my shirt. My whole body hurt like I’d been dropped from a cliff.

Across the room, Riven sat in a chair. Arms folded. Watching.

“You’ve been out almost a day,” he said. “Kael didn’t want to leave. I told him I’d stay.”

I wiped my face. “Why you?”

He stood and walked over. Rolled up his sleeve.

“Because something marked me too.”

On his arm, I saw a shimmer. Faint, gray, curling up his skin like smoke.

My stomach turned. “That’s not a bond.”

“No. But it’s real.”

“You think the Gate touched you?”

He nodded. “Right before you vanished, I reached for you. I don’t think it liked

My blood turned cold. One guard gone. One poisoner loose. And a tray meant for Riven’s throat nearly ended it all.“Seal the western corridors,” Riven barked. “Now. Nobody gets in or out.”A messenger was sent, and the fortress snapped to attention. Within minutes, the hunt began.I couldn’t breathe properly. Not because of fear, but because this felt too deliberate, too rehearsed. The woman hadn’t acted alone. She knew the fortress better than some of the guards.“She wasn’t working alone,” I said softly, catching Kael’s eye as he stormed in. “Someone helped her get out.”“Who?” Kael’s voice was all rage and gravel. “Someone in this house?”My eyes shifted. The only person who had been hovering in the background lately, close to staff, yet hidden behind the veil of being ‘harmless.’ Celina’s mother. She

I hadn’t seen Riven this still in days. He sat at the long table in the private war chamber, his usual scowl softened by fatigue. The last battle had drained him—body, mind, and soul. A thick silence settled in the room, broken only by the flicker of torchlight and the creak of leather as Kael leaned forward.I entered quietly, clutching my robe tighter, still shaken by the last nightmare. The one where Darius bled out beneath my feet, though I hadn’t touched him.“Rory,” Riven murmured, noticing me first. His voice was quieter than usual. I moved toward him butstopped when a serving girl brushed past me carrying a silver tray. She moved too fast.Too neat.Riven reached for the goblet she offered without glancing at her. I noticed the hesitation in her step, almost too subtle, but it made my stomach twist.“Wait,” I said.Riven paused, fingers barely touching the cup. Kael raised an eye

I sat alone, staring at the snake’s body.Something changed tonight. And I could feel it crawling under my skin.My wolf stirred. Not in rage. But in awareness. We were being hunted. And not just by Celina.By whatever wanted the Gate unopened.I leaned back into the pillows, sleep dragging at my limbs. I didn’t want to close my eyes. But they did anyway. And in the dark of my mind…A whisper came."You will break before you rise. One bond shattered. Two to go."My eyes flew open. The voice… it wasn’t mine.It wasn’t even the child’s.It was hers.Celeste.Or… some future version of me.I didn’t know what was worse. The silence after the healers left was louder than the screams had been.I sat on the edge of the bed, hands shaking. The snake hadn’t bitten me, but it had been close.Too close. The moment I saw it coiled under the table, I knew… it wasn’

I jerked awake, my throat dry, my hands trembling. The room was still. Too still. It wasn’t real. The fire. The blood. Darius convulsing beneath my power. I hadn’t killed him. I hadn’t even touched him.It was just a dream. A twisted, brutal dream. And yet my heart pounded like I had lived it.My hands went to my belly on instinct. The child. Still there. Still watching.I sat up slowly, taking in the chamber, my chamber, and the low flicker of candlelight across the stone. My senses twitched. Something was off.The air had a scent. Not blood. Not smoke. Something... living. Coiled. Waiting.I turned toward the far edge of the room and froze. There, nestled under the edge of the pelts, was a snake. Long and scaled, its eyes glowing faintly gold in the firelight. It wasn’t a normal snake. I didn’t need a seer’s vision to feel that.It was death wrapped in scales.I

The silence between us crackled, louder than any scream. I stared at Elder Darius, unsure if my legswould hold if I tried to stand. My heart thundered. My skin was still cold, my fingertips numb, but my instincts screamed danger.“What did you say?” I asked, even though I’d heard him. Every word. Every threat. He stepped closer, each movement deliberate and calculated. “You heard me,” he said smoothly.“The Council allowed your presence because of the prophecy. But now… you’re spiraling. Unstable. A risk to all of us.”The bed creaked as I shifted back, desperate to keep some space between us. “I didn’t ask for any of this,” I whispered. “The bonds. The Gate. The prophecy. I didn’t ask to be your threat.”“But you are,” he said, like it was a settled fact.I wanted to reach for my power. To flare with fire and fury and show him I wasn

The floor tilted beneath me. My hands fumbled for something solid, but the stone was already rushing up to meet me.I hit the ground hard.Voices became noise, muffled, distant, and waterlogged. My limbs felt like they were floating away from my body, scattered into smoke. I couldn’t speak. Couldn’t breathe. Inside my chest, my heartbeat fluttered like a trapped bird, frantic… dying.I heard Kael yell my name.Someone shoved past others in the room. Thorne, maybe. Or Riven. But their voices were a blur, tangled with the echo of something darker pulsing through my veins. And through it all… a cold, steady voice. Celina.“She just fainted. It’s the pregnancy. I warned her she’s been pushing herself too hard.”Liar.But I couldn’t form the word. My tongue wouldn’t move. I tried to lift my hand, but it wouldn’t obey me.I wasn’t in control anymore.
