Lumiere's POV

Cold water dripped from the stone ceiling, hitting the back of my neck like frozen needles.

The emergency red-alert klaxon still shrieked through the ventilation shafts, a harsh, pulsing rhythm that matched the frantic beating of my heart. Total darkness swallowed the archive room. I couldn't see the computer terminal, Jalo, or Mikael. The only thing keeping me anchored to reality was the solid warmth of Mikael’s shoulder pressed against mine in the dark.

"Stay behind me," Mikael

Lumiere's POV The study was so quiet that I could hear the ticking of the old clock in the corner.“Lower the gun, Mikael.” Otso picked up his pipe and took his time lighting it. His voice was calm, almost gentle, the same tone he had used to control the northern coalition for years. “You're letting your emotions get the better of you, boy. If the council saw you pointing a gun at the man who built you, you'd lose your title before the hour was up.”Mikael's finger remained on the trigger. Before he could respond, the heavy double doors swung open.Talvikki stepped into the study, her face pale beneath the amber emergency lights. She held a military-grade tablet in her left hand, its screen filled with lines of network traffic and security logs.“He isn't acting on emotion, Otso,” she said. Her voice trembled, but not with fear. “He's acting on proof.”Mikael didn't lower his gun. His eyes moved briefly to the tablet.“I ran the diagnostics again using the physical copper lines,” Tal

  • Bound to the Syndicate Boss    Chapter forty six

Lumiere's POV Otso’s voice cut out, leaving only a high-pitched ringing in the small metal bunker.Mikael still had his gun pressed against Talvikki’s temple, his body tense and ready to strike. The blue light from the router logs flickered across his jaw, reflecting in his eyes, which had turned almost black with anger."Mikael, look at the packet routing," I said, trying to keep my voice steady as I reached for his wrist. His skin was hot beneath my fingers, and I could feel the tension running through him. "She's telling the truth. The authorization key was cloned, but look where the master transmission originated."He didn't lower his gun right away. His ice-grey eyes moved from Talvikki to the terminal, following the secondary trace line I pointed out.Beneath the cloned authorization tag, another network path appeared in a series of scrolling red hex codes. The encrypted packet hadn't come from the medical bay or a mobile radio unit. The original signal had passed straight thro

  • Bound to the Syndicate Boss    Chapter forty five

Lumiere's POV My breath caught as Mikael’s broad palm pressed against my chest, shoving me deeper into the hollow of the stone pillar.“Don’t move,” he growled over the deafening clatter of high-caliber rounds tearing through the glass walkway above us.His hand reached up, calloused fingers catching the hem of my dark cardigan. With one sharp jerk, he ripped the fabric open, tearing the top button clean off. He reached inside and pressed his thumb hard against the inner lining near my collarbone. A second later, his fingers closed around something small, metallic, and cold. With a sharp snap, he pulled out a microscopic tracking pin, no bigger than a grain of rice. A faint red light pulsed from its center.“They didn’t just guess your route,” Talvikki called from behind the adjacent column, ducking as a spray of stone splinters rained down over her hair. “They were tracking her signal!”Mikael didn’t hesitate. He dropped the tiny device onto the flagstone floor and crushed it beneat

  • Bound to the Syndicate Boss    Chapter forty four

Lumiere's POV The heavy steel door slid open with a screech of tortured metal, but it wasn't Otso’s strike team pouring into the room.It was Talvikki. Her tactical vest was scorched black, her face smeared with soot, and her hand pressed tight against a bleeding shoulder. Behind her, three loyal house guards held the corridor, their weapons trained on the lingering smoke of the lower stairwell."Boss," Talvikki gasped, her voice rough and breathless as she stumbled into the doorway. "The auxiliary security grid is down, but we cleared the third floor. Otso pulled his perimeter team back to the north docks."Mikael was off the bed in a single, fluid motion. He didn't say a word. He grabbed his holster from the nightstand, strapped it across his chest, and pulled his dark coat over his shoulders. The gentle, vulnerable man who had held me in the pale light of morning vanished completely, replaced in an instant by the cold, lethal commander of the syndicate."How did they breach the se

  • Bound to the Syndicate Boss    Chapter forty three

Lumiere's POV Pale, cold morning light filtered through the thin gap in the heavy velvet drapes, cutting through the settling smoke in the quiet suite.I woke up to the slow, heavy rhythm of a heartbeat beneath my cheek.Mikael’s arm was thrown over my waist, a solid, protective weight anchoring me to the mattress. His large hand rested against my hip, his thumb occasionally twitching in his sleep, holding me as if I might vanish the moment he loosened his grip. His face was relaxed for the first time since I had met him—the harsh, unyielding lines around his jaw softened, the lethal syndicate boss replaced by a man who looked exhausted, carrying ten years of guilt on his shoulders.I lay there completely still, my own breathing shallow as I looked up at him.A sharp, cold panic pooled deep in my stomach, far more terrifying than the thermal charges Otso’s strike team had set against our outer doors hours ago.I was falling for him.The realization hit me like a physical strike to th

  • Bound to the Syndicate Boss    Chapter Forty two

Lumiere's POV The heavy steel door of the suite muffled the outside world into a distant, rhythmic thud of boots and cutting torches.Days had blurred together in the suffocating quiet of Mikael's private quarters. Outside, Otso's strike teams were systematically stripping the fortress down to its bones, blocking every exit and cutting the power grid to force us out. Inside, the air seemed to grow thinner by the hour. The automated emergency ventilators stuttered, while a faint chemical tang of smoke began seeping through the vents—a slow, deliberate fire burning in the lower utility tunnels to flush us into the open.I sat on the edge of the large bed, staring at the small tactical monitor on the nightstand. The thermal signatures in the hallway were getting closer, pressing against the perimeter of our reinforced wall.Mikael stood near the window with his back to me. He had stripped off his tactical vest hours ago, leaving him in a dark, sweat-dampened shirt that clung to the broa
