My eyes fluttered open, and I smiled at the sight before me of the massive chest my head was lying on. I snuggled into him further, thinking This is one hell of a fantasy I am having! Heat runs through me as I inhale his scent, fighting the urge not to rub my face all over every inch of him in front of me. Then reality set in, and my bliss lasted about half a minute more before I knew I wasn't dreaming. The wolfman was real, last night happened, and I had just mated him! Rae is growling at me in protest as I ease away from him and off the bed. Oh my goddess, what have I done?! Thankfully, much of last night is foggy still; I am no better than the prostitutes I ran off from McGilleys. Wolfman stretched in the bed, and I froze in my tracks for a moment, thinking I had woken him up. 'His name is Nick!' Rea said. 'Where are you going?' I scrambled in the dark to find my strewn clothes and get dressed. ‘Back to reality, Rae.’ I'm already moving toward the door and easing it open. 'You can't just leave; they're our mates, Harley. I don't want to leave them, and neither do you.' 'Shut it, Rae,' I eased the door closed behind me and slumped against it. 'He can't be, not now.' Across the street and into the parking lot, I ran to my car and got in. I've felt his dark chocolate eyes on me since I exited the motel. From the driver’s window, I saw him in front of the window in the room I had fled. I swallowed hard at the sight. Nick is, hands down, the most gorgeous man I have ever seen. He has to be over 6ft tall and is as broad as a board, with a body made for loving. His dark, wavy hair hung to his shoulders and felt soft between my fingers. And his lips, oh my, were they delicious and long for another taste? I can't deny my attraction to him, nor can I explain his pull on me. The need to be close to him clouds my better judgment, but that doesn't make him my fated mate. 'No, Selene did that for us. You can't fight destiny, Harley.' 'Mating with anyone is not possible for me, especially an Alpha. In doing so, I might as well paint a bullseye on both our backs.' Before I change my mind, I peel out of the parking lot. The past few hours with Nick were also hands down the best sex I’ve ever had. I park the car and drag myself up the stairs to my apartment. Washing his scent from my skin is something I dread, but I won’t ever forget it. My bed is calling to me, but I dry off, dress, and head back to the boulevard to snuff out Peter. He is right on the corner where the shop owner said he would be. He spots me before I get out of my car and packs up his merchandise as I approach him. "Where are you going in such a rush, Pete? Drop the bag and step away." He does. "Detective, I didn’t steal any of it, I swear. I found the items in a dumpster behind the strip mall." Before responding, I kneel and go through the bag. "Did you find any gloves in the dumpster, Peter?" "They took all the gloves from the truck before I got there." The look on his face was one of shock, then regret for the slip of the tongue. "Did you get a good look at anyone other than yourself looting the truck?" He shrugged his shoulders. "Maybe a couple." Standing, I picked the bag up from the ground. "Ok, Mr. Piper, I’ll make you a deal. I won't cause a scene hauling your ass out of here for receiving stolen merchandise. If you come down to the station and give a description of who you saw." "No one can see me going all free Willy into the police station. I could kiss my business goodbye!" "Okay, let's go. Then, put your hands behind your back; you just picked your poison." My hand goes to my back to retrieve my handcuffs. "Alright. Alright, I will come this afternoon." "Good choice, Pete, my man, didn't make me have to come find you." I walked back to my car, tossed the duffel bag of stolen goods into the backseat, and got inside. I called into the station to inform the captain that I had found our dealer and that he would bring his pickled, peppered, picking ass into the station. My next stop was the city impound. I put my car into gear as my mind filled with my wolfman. If he had come here looking for his Luna, I can't blame him for deciding I am not the right choice. Running off into the night with an unknown man to make passionate love wasn't something I did every day or had ever done before, but he didn't know that. Why what he thinks of me is suddenly so important, I didn't know, but I decided instead to go back to the motel and straighten out a few things. The eyes on me don’t seem to matter as I exit my car and head for his door, expecting him to be waiting on the other side, but he wasn't. My heart sank with the realization that he was gone. Housekeeping hadn't cleaned the room yet, so I closed the door behind me and moved over to the bed. I picked up his pillow and held it to my face. That's the stuff! I removed it, folded it, and tucked the pillowcase into my jacket before quickly exiting the room. The disappointment that goes through my wolf's heart hurts mine as well. ‘Rae, I am sorry.’ 'You should have stayed with them.' 'Stop dismissing the fact that they left us, too. No good could have come from it. Would you want me to drag them in the middle of my father and the stalker if they are our mates? Not to mention that the alpha will not leave his pack to come help me chase bad guys. Either way, I don't see a future between us and the Wolfman.'Harley~The universe doesn't listen, and the next thing I see before me is the most beautiful, peaceful place I could ever imagine. I somehow know that it is Sauther Lake; I am home. Not wasting another moment on the nightmare, I step into the scene, turn, and see Lauren has appeared beside me. "I am ready to come home, Lauren."Lauren turned to face me, hummed a familiar tune, and started moving her hands in unfamiliar patterns all around me. My insides heated as her movements intensified, as if she were branding something on my soul. She put the stone she'd held into my hand when she was done. "You don't have to be alone anymore, Harley." She disappeared into the mist. "Wait, I have so many questions!I'm once again alone in the darkness. "Let me go home!" Someone or something must have taken pity on me, as I find myself back in Melinda's living room, still on my knees with my face buried in my hands. The fire has gone out in more ways than one. "Did you find what you were looking
Harley~ Nick pampered me in every way he saw fit, and I was loving it. One might not put a bounty hunter and an attentive caregiver in the same category, but I sure would now. After my bubble bath, he put me to bed and snuggled close to me, wrapping me in his cocoon as if I were his butterfly about to emerge. Delighted and satisfied, I closed my eyes and drifted into a peaceful sleep; however, it didn't last long. My eyes flew open as I woke in a cold sweat after finding myself alone in the delivery room. With no Ben or Nick by my side, I clung to Nick, only breathing again when I was sure it was just a dream. My eyes filled with tears, and I closed them as tightly as possible as I begged the goddess to hear my prayer. This had to be Nick's child growing inside of me; it just has to be! 'You don't need to get yourself so worked up, Harley. It isn't good for you or our baby. We will know for sure tomorrow, but it won't matter to Nick.' 'Maybe not right away, but eventually, he
Nick~About ten minutes later, I burst through the door of her apartment to find Harley pacing the floor. Of course, I reach for her, but she backs away from me, a feeling I don't like."Sit." She gestures toward the sofa, and I take a seat."What is wrong, Amante?"With tears streaming down her cheeks, she wrings her hands and paces the floor in front of me. "I am pregnant, Nick.""That's amazing; why are you crying, Harley?""Shut up, damn it, Nick, listen to me for a minute; it's not that simple because I don't know who the baby belongs to."I have never been so high, or so low, so quickly; Harley stops in front of me as if she's waiting for her punishment, but I don't have any to give. There's no doubt in my mind that Harley loves me, and I can clearly see that she is already punishing herself enough; still, she backs away as I reach for her."There's more, Nick."What more could they possibly be? She looked at me, and it didn't matter. "Tell me whatever you like, but I've already
Harley~We arrived at the station separately and were on time for the morning briefing. As I suspected, the stalker hasn't returned to either branch, and nobody has used the debit card. A weary sigh escaped me somehow. I'm feeling neither shocked nor surprised. Captain Howard wants us back on the streets in full force, but I reminded him of my appointment. My Wolfman may not be an agent, but he is smart."I'll be out of the office sometime this afternoon as well. My SAC is expecting an update on our progress."I focused on the Captain. "Did we get anything from Peter?" "Yes, a couple of descriptions, but neither of the sketches matches our suspects. I need you both back here ASAP."Howard calls the powwow, and we all leave the SCIF room. I want a moment alone with Nick before my appointment, but I know it's not appropriate. He is in my head, before I get out of the parking lot, telling me he loves me and will wait to hear from me, and I smile as I return his sentiment.'He's worried
Harley~Nick grabs his still-packed bag from our trip to Culer City, and we head up the stairs. He has no trouble with the lock that sticks and hands me my keys after opening the door. My stomach is doing somersaults as I flip on the ceiling fan light and put the keys on the hook by the door before turning to face him."I'm sure it's not what you're used to, but it's comfortable."He tossed his bag onto the sofa and pulled me into him. "As long as you are with me, a cardboard box under a bridge would satisfy me, Amante."I'm picturing our cardboard house rocking on that bridge and feeling the impact of my dirty thoughts on my cheeks. Nick grinned at me as if he'd read my mind. Taking his hand, I led him down the hallway to my bedroom, which I instantly regretted.Nick leveled me with a cocky grin when he smelled himself coming from my bed. His eyes are searching for the source as mine focus on the pillowcase from the hotel, and I feel the heat creep up my cheeks all over again. As a d
Harley~Perhaps against his better judgment, Nick leaves me alone in the car again. It's a wonder he looks almost as good going as he does coming. The way his ass fills those jeans starts a fire as I watch him until he enters the Bodega. My soul is singing the song of his admission of love for me as I close my eyes and rest my head on the rest. Although it had been a Freudian slip on Nick's part, I knew he meant it. Beautiful pinks and yellows claim the sky as the sun sets, and a cool breeze blows off the bay. Not being able to resist, I leaned forward, turned the switch, and rolled down the windows. The pungent smell of diesel fuel from the bay also wafts through the car, silencing my soul song and snatching me back to reality; now I am fighting the door handle for release.Nick calls my name as he returns to find me leaning out of the car seat and heaving. Only the goddess knows what he's thinking, probably that he's gotten himself in a mess with me. He puts the cupholder and bag o
