I didn't know jack shit about finesse or how to handle people, and it showed, but I'd just watched with curiosity and amazement as my smooth-as-silk mate got precisely what she wanted from the manager. She handed me a manifest before turning and twitching her hot little ass out of the sliding glass doors that led to the impound yard, and I stepped in line behind her, enjoying the view. Once outside, she stops short in front of me. Hitting the brick wall behind her, she grunts and looks at the map. "Vans are in the back," I point to the yard map. "It's a ways back; are you going to be okay?" "I'll be fine, Agent, led the way." She takes the shades off her head and puts them on. I want to wrap my arm around her as we walk, but I remember her pulling away from me when we pulled in. It isn't appropriate for us to be seen having a PDA, I suppose, so I shove my hand in my pocket instead, none too happy about it. Zeek invades my mind. 'So when exactly will you be honest with her?' 'So when exactly are you going to keep your opinions to yourself? That was our deal, remember? Would you like me to come clean now, Zeek? Before you have the chance to meet your mate? You know they are a package deal; if Harley walks, so does her wolf.' That put a different light on it for my wolf. 'Perhaps it is best to wait a little longer. Could you ask what my mate's name is?' 'Sure, Zeek.' It would help if I knew Harley was in as deep as I am; if she could grow horns and a tail at night, and I would wait at the gates with her spit-shined trident. I chuckled to myself at the thought as we made it to the back row, and I noticed my Amante wasn't looking so well, so I pulled the water bottle from my back pocket and handed it to her. "Thank you." She pops the Tylenol, which appeared from out of nowhere, into her mouth and takes a big swallow. Numbers three and four for the day so far. "How long have you had these headaches?" "Since I can remember." She shrugged her shoulders and tried to blow it off. "Let's go this way first." She heads down the row of vans on our right. I follow, of course. "Can I make you an appointment with my pack doctor?" "So you are an Alpha?" She focuses on the van in front of her, kneeling and searching the driver's door for the VINs. "I was born an Alpha male, yes. You didn't answer my question." "This isn't the van." She comes up right and sways a little. Zeek growls at me like it's my fault! "It's just allergies because I haven't been diligent in keeping my appointments for the injections. Trust me, I have learned my lesson." We move on to the next van, though at the moment, I could give a happy rat's ass about its identification, but at the risk of Harley getting injured, I kneel to the driver's door. This one still had a panel, so I ripped it off the metal and cursed inwardly when the VIN matched the one on the missing van. No way was I getting my Amante out of here now. "This is it." Harley pulled latex gloves from her back pocket, put on a set, handed the other to me, then moved to the back of the van and opened the double doors. My hands don't fit, but I try to shove them on. Though the truck was empty, Harley still climbed in to have a better look. "So what made you leave your pack?" Harley is trying to sound casual, but I hear the need behind her question and am about to take advantage of it; it's truth or dare time! "I'll tell if you will." She looked up at me and nodded. "I didn't want to be the Alpha of the pack and still don't; I left my father's pass to my younger brother. It's your turn, Amante." Harley never stops her search or even glances my way as if her speech is well-rehearsed. "I don't have any family; my childhood memories are of growing up from one orphanage to another until I aged out." That lie raised a brow; it saddens me to know Harley would rather have been an orphan than where she came from. I'm seeing that we still have a way to go, at least I am not the only one keeping unpleasant truths about my past, though mine is far worse. "Sounds lonely to me." "I survived. There's nothing here; we need to return it to our lot so Belinda can work her magic." She makes the call to her captain. "Now what?" She looks at me as if I were a moron. "I'm not sure how the FBI handles it, but once we find evidence, we don't leave it until we secure it." She winks at me before walking to the trees surrounding the lot. She sits down in the shade, and I follow, of course. "How are you feeling, Amante?" My mate has mastered the art of deflection. "What is the name you call me? Amante?" "It's Italian; it means my love or lover. Don't you like it?" "Yes, I like it; I was just curious. I'm ok; the getting down is easy; it's the getting up that's a bitch." Her hand goes to the inside of my thigh, and I love the way she responds to my touch. "Have you ever thought about searching for your family?" She gave me a drawn-out pffffffft! "For what? You think they changed their minds?" "You could have siblings." I regretted my comment when her eyes filled with sadness. "I have thought about that." She focused on the ground. "You're not alone anymore, Harley." I lift my hand to her face, feathering my knuckles across her cheek before lifting her chin and kissing her lips. The radio at her side goes off, breaking the spell. It's a guy asking for our 10-20. I know little, but enough to know he is asking for our location and that I have to keep my hands to myself. Zeek growls at me. "Zeek wants to know what his mate's name is." Harley's wolf came to life, and I felt her purr. "Raelynn, Rae for short."Harley~The universe doesn't listen, and the next thing I see before me is the most beautiful, peaceful place I could ever imagine. I somehow know that it is Sauther Lake; I am home. Not wasting another moment on the nightmare, I step into the scene, turn, and see Lauren has appeared beside me. "I am ready to come home, Lauren."Lauren turned to face me, hummed a familiar tune, and started moving her hands in unfamiliar patterns all around me. My insides heated as her movements intensified, as if she were branding something on my soul. She put the stone she'd held into my hand when she was done. "You don't have to be alone anymore, Harley." She disappeared into the mist. "Wait, I have so many questions!I'm once again alone in the darkness. "Let me go home!" Someone or something must have taken pity on me, as I find myself back in Melinda's living room, still on my knees with my face buried in my hands. The fire has gone out in more ways than one. "Did you find what you were looking
Harley~ Nick pampered me in every way he saw fit, and I was loving it. One might not put a bounty hunter and an attentive caregiver in the same category, but I sure would now. After my bubble bath, he put me to bed and snuggled close to me, wrapping me in his cocoon as if I were his butterfly about to emerge. Delighted and satisfied, I closed my eyes and drifted into a peaceful sleep; however, it didn't last long. My eyes flew open as I woke in a cold sweat after finding myself alone in the delivery room. With no Ben or Nick by my side, I clung to Nick, only breathing again when I was sure it was just a dream. My eyes filled with tears, and I closed them as tightly as possible as I begged the goddess to hear my prayer. This had to be Nick's child growing inside of me; it just has to be! 'You don't need to get yourself so worked up, Harley. It isn't good for you or our baby. We will know for sure tomorrow, but it won't matter to Nick.' 'Maybe not right away, but eventually, he
Nick~About ten minutes later, I burst through the door of her apartment to find Harley pacing the floor. Of course, I reach for her, but she backs away from me, a feeling I don't like."Sit." She gestures toward the sofa, and I take a seat."What is wrong, Amante?"With tears streaming down her cheeks, she wrings her hands and paces the floor in front of me. "I am pregnant, Nick.""That's amazing; why are you crying, Harley?""Shut up, damn it, Nick, listen to me for a minute; it's not that simple because I don't know who the baby belongs to."I have never been so high, or so low, so quickly; Harley stops in front of me as if she's waiting for her punishment, but I don't have any to give. There's no doubt in my mind that Harley loves me, and I can clearly see that she is already punishing herself enough; still, she backs away as I reach for her."There's more, Nick."What more could they possibly be? She looked at me, and it didn't matter. "Tell me whatever you like, but I've already
Harley~We arrived at the station separately and were on time for the morning briefing. As I suspected, the stalker hasn't returned to either branch, and nobody has used the debit card. A weary sigh escaped me somehow. I'm feeling neither shocked nor surprised. Captain Howard wants us back on the streets in full force, but I reminded him of my appointment. My Wolfman may not be an agent, but he is smart."I'll be out of the office sometime this afternoon as well. My SAC is expecting an update on our progress."I focused on the Captain. "Did we get anything from Peter?" "Yes, a couple of descriptions, but neither of the sketches matches our suspects. I need you both back here ASAP."Howard calls the powwow, and we all leave the SCIF room. I want a moment alone with Nick before my appointment, but I know it's not appropriate. He is in my head, before I get out of the parking lot, telling me he loves me and will wait to hear from me, and I smile as I return his sentiment.'He's worried
Harley~Nick grabs his still-packed bag from our trip to Culer City, and we head up the stairs. He has no trouble with the lock that sticks and hands me my keys after opening the door. My stomach is doing somersaults as I flip on the ceiling fan light and put the keys on the hook by the door before turning to face him."I'm sure it's not what you're used to, but it's comfortable."He tossed his bag onto the sofa and pulled me into him. "As long as you are with me, a cardboard box under a bridge would satisfy me, Amante."I'm picturing our cardboard house rocking on that bridge and feeling the impact of my dirty thoughts on my cheeks. Nick grinned at me as if he'd read my mind. Taking his hand, I led him down the hallway to my bedroom, which I instantly regretted.Nick leveled me with a cocky grin when he smelled himself coming from my bed. His eyes are searching for the source as mine focus on the pillowcase from the hotel, and I feel the heat creep up my cheeks all over again. As a d
Harley~Perhaps against his better judgment, Nick leaves me alone in the car again. It's a wonder he looks almost as good going as he does coming. The way his ass fills those jeans starts a fire as I watch him until he enters the Bodega. My soul is singing the song of his admission of love for me as I close my eyes and rest my head on the rest. Although it had been a Freudian slip on Nick's part, I knew he meant it. Beautiful pinks and yellows claim the sky as the sun sets, and a cool breeze blows off the bay. Not being able to resist, I leaned forward, turned the switch, and rolled down the windows. The pungent smell of diesel fuel from the bay also wafts through the car, silencing my soul song and snatching me back to reality; now I am fighting the door handle for release.Nick calls my name as he returns to find me leaning out of the car seat and heaving. Only the goddess knows what he's thinking, probably that he's gotten himself in a mess with me. He puts the cupholder and bag o
