"Excuse me, please." Out of the captain's office, I bolt to the nearest bathroom, entering the accessible stall. After securing the latch lock, I slide down the wall to the floor and hug my knees to my chest, tears welling up in my eyes. 'It's going to be ok, Harley, breathe; I know you just got a double shot, but you've got to get yourself together, sister.' 'What do I do, Rae?' 'You put on your big-girl panties and get up off the floor; we still have a job to do, Detective; you can't back down from Nick or Lenorad. Show them they're dealing with a strong Lycan!' Sheer determination brings me up by my bootstraps! Damned, I will be before I let the Wolfman waltz in here and shake my foundation, mate or not! The stall door swings open. I go to the hand sink, turn on the faucet, and cup water over my face. Rae flashes forward, and I see what I am when I exit the bathroom. I find them both waiting in the hallway. Howard raised his eyebrows and crossed his arms over his chest. "Are you okay, Detective?" "I am fine, Captain, damn allergies." Nick's eyes surprised me when they filled with genuine concern. "We can do this later if you aren't feeling well." "That won't be necessary, Agent Reins; Captain Howard suggested I wait for you to search for the missing van. Just let me get the file, and we can go." I moved past them to my desk. "It's good to have you on board, Agent Reins. Let me know what you find, Detective, and I will run Luccese through the panels while you're gone." Mitch walks away, and I head for the door, not bothering to see if the Wolfman is following me; it wasn't necessary, as I could feel him. With the key fob, I unlock the car, go to the passenger side, and get inside. Nick slides into the driver's seat, and I pass him the keys. He starts the car; I enter the coordinates into the GPS interface, then plant my hands in my lap and look out the window. "It's nice to see you again, Harley." My brain isn't functioning enough for me to speak, and I remain quiet when he wants to know how I've been. Though I have seemed to have lost my voice, Rae hasn't. Nick's wolf growls at her, and she returns his sentiments. Nick follows the GPS for a few more unanswered questions before entering a parking lot. He finds a secluded spot and puts the car in park, turns to face me, and cups my face in his hands. Like a moth drawn to a flame, I turned my face into his palm, not at all what I intended to do, but resistance was futile. He slid his hand around my neck and under my hair, leaving my skin a heated trail as he pulled me to him. His lips are gentle on mine at first, and his warmth makes me moan as my arms wrap around his neck, where my fingers tangle in his hair like it's their nest. In response, he deepened the kiss. When he released me, I groaned in protest. "Why didn't you tell me, Nick?" "There wasn't much time between the bar and my hotel room, and I was called back to headquarters on another case shortly after you left." My cheeks heat as I pull away from him. "About that, Nick, I want to apologize for my behavior at McGilleys. It's not like I do what we did with strange men as a hobby." "The thought never crossed my mind; you were just a she-wolf following her instinct, which is good, by the way. I would worry if you didn't find your fated mate attractive." "You know about that, too, hun?" I bit my lip, earning me a deep rumble from Nick. His deep voice caused kitty juice to leak into my panties. He pulls me back in, and I go to him obediently. "I do, but I assure you there will be no pressure from me. My wolf, Zeek, however, would like to meet his mate at least, so I asked you once before; let me see your wolf." Rae turns on her motor, and the seat behind me vibrates. "Ok, Wolfman, but not now; we have work to do first." Nick's fingers trail over my marking spot, and a chill runs down my spine before he takes my hand, kisses it, and places it on his thigh. Then, he puts the car in reverse. I'd never thought I would enjoy being electrocuted, but I damn sure do! Sparks fly over my skin as he draws circles on the back of my hand with his thumb. We pull into Young's Recoveries' parking lot and park. Nick leans in for a kiss, and I instinctively pull away from him. Disappointment flashed in his eyes. To flee the scene, I jerked the handle to open the door. As soon as my feet hit the asphalt, I realized I had gone too far too fast when my legs were as sturdy as running water beneath me. In a second, I realized Nick had seen me slump against the car when his massive hands encircled my waist. "I am fine, Nick. I have an appointment the day after tomorrow." He steps back but stays close. "I know LA is diverse, but I didn't realize there was a pack doctor." Now he sounds like my wolf, I shrugged. "There isn't. It's just Mad Wolf disease. As long as I get my shots every month, I don't foam at the mouth." We get into the office, and Nick steps in front of me; I don't like that! He flashed his badge abruptly in the clerk's face, and I don't like that either. His voice was sharp when he spoke to the parts clerk. "I am Agent Reins, and this is Detective Gibson. Are you the manager?" As I stepped around him, I gave him the side-eye. "Nancy is not the manager. Is Phill around?" "Sure, Detective." She walked away to get Phill. "You will catch more flies with honey than vinegar, Agent Reins." A few moments later, Phill came up from the back office. "What can I do for you, Detective?" "Hi, Phill. I am looking for a cargo van, maybe a 22' or 23' model only. I don't know the make, but I assume it is white and would have a big H on the side." Phill types away on his keyboard. A satisfied smile crosses my face. "I don't remember a van with an H, but I have a few; you're welcome to look." He hands me two printouts. "Thanks, Phill." I hand Nick a copy, and we head out the service door towards the lot.Harley~The universe doesn't listen, and the next thing I see before me is the most beautiful, peaceful place I could ever imagine. I somehow know that it is Sauther Lake; I am home. Not wasting another moment on the nightmare, I step into the scene, turn, and see Lauren has appeared beside me. "I am ready to come home, Lauren."Lauren turned to face me, hummed a familiar tune, and started moving her hands in unfamiliar patterns all around me. My insides heated as her movements intensified, as if she were branding something on my soul. She put the stone she'd held into my hand when she was done. "You don't have to be alone anymore, Harley." She disappeared into the mist. "Wait, I have so many questions!I'm once again alone in the darkness. "Let me go home!" Someone or something must have taken pity on me, as I find myself back in Melinda's living room, still on my knees with my face buried in my hands. The fire has gone out in more ways than one. "Did you find what you were looking
Harley~ Nick pampered me in every way he saw fit, and I was loving it. One might not put a bounty hunter and an attentive caregiver in the same category, but I sure would now. After my bubble bath, he put me to bed and snuggled close to me, wrapping me in his cocoon as if I were his butterfly about to emerge. Delighted and satisfied, I closed my eyes and drifted into a peaceful sleep; however, it didn't last long. My eyes flew open as I woke in a cold sweat after finding myself alone in the delivery room. With no Ben or Nick by my side, I clung to Nick, only breathing again when I was sure it was just a dream. My eyes filled with tears, and I closed them as tightly as possible as I begged the goddess to hear my prayer. This had to be Nick's child growing inside of me; it just has to be! 'You don't need to get yourself so worked up, Harley. It isn't good for you or our baby. We will know for sure tomorrow, but it won't matter to Nick.' 'Maybe not right away, but eventually, he
Nick~About ten minutes later, I burst through the door of her apartment to find Harley pacing the floor. Of course, I reach for her, but she backs away from me, a feeling I don't like."Sit." She gestures toward the sofa, and I take a seat."What is wrong, Amante?"With tears streaming down her cheeks, she wrings her hands and paces the floor in front of me. "I am pregnant, Nick.""That's amazing; why are you crying, Harley?""Shut up, damn it, Nick, listen to me for a minute; it's not that simple because I don't know who the baby belongs to."I have never been so high, or so low, so quickly; Harley stops in front of me as if she's waiting for her punishment, but I don't have any to give. There's no doubt in my mind that Harley loves me, and I can clearly see that she is already punishing herself enough; still, she backs away as I reach for her."There's more, Nick."What more could they possibly be? She looked at me, and it didn't matter. "Tell me whatever you like, but I've already
Harley~We arrived at the station separately and were on time for the morning briefing. As I suspected, the stalker hasn't returned to either branch, and nobody has used the debit card. A weary sigh escaped me somehow. I'm feeling neither shocked nor surprised. Captain Howard wants us back on the streets in full force, but I reminded him of my appointment. My Wolfman may not be an agent, but he is smart."I'll be out of the office sometime this afternoon as well. My SAC is expecting an update on our progress."I focused on the Captain. "Did we get anything from Peter?" "Yes, a couple of descriptions, but neither of the sketches matches our suspects. I need you both back here ASAP."Howard calls the powwow, and we all leave the SCIF room. I want a moment alone with Nick before my appointment, but I know it's not appropriate. He is in my head, before I get out of the parking lot, telling me he loves me and will wait to hear from me, and I smile as I return his sentiment.'He's worried
Harley~Nick grabs his still-packed bag from our trip to Culer City, and we head up the stairs. He has no trouble with the lock that sticks and hands me my keys after opening the door. My stomach is doing somersaults as I flip on the ceiling fan light and put the keys on the hook by the door before turning to face him."I'm sure it's not what you're used to, but it's comfortable."He tossed his bag onto the sofa and pulled me into him. "As long as you are with me, a cardboard box under a bridge would satisfy me, Amante."I'm picturing our cardboard house rocking on that bridge and feeling the impact of my dirty thoughts on my cheeks. Nick grinned at me as if he'd read my mind. Taking his hand, I led him down the hallway to my bedroom, which I instantly regretted.Nick leveled me with a cocky grin when he smelled himself coming from my bed. His eyes are searching for the source as mine focus on the pillowcase from the hotel, and I feel the heat creep up my cheeks all over again. As a d
Harley~Perhaps against his better judgment, Nick leaves me alone in the car again. It's a wonder he looks almost as good going as he does coming. The way his ass fills those jeans starts a fire as I watch him until he enters the Bodega. My soul is singing the song of his admission of love for me as I close my eyes and rest my head on the rest. Although it had been a Freudian slip on Nick's part, I knew he meant it. Beautiful pinks and yellows claim the sky as the sun sets, and a cool breeze blows off the bay. Not being able to resist, I leaned forward, turned the switch, and rolled down the windows. The pungent smell of diesel fuel from the bay also wafts through the car, silencing my soul song and snatching me back to reality; now I am fighting the door handle for release.Nick calls my name as he returns to find me leaning out of the car seat and heaving. Only the goddess knows what he's thinking, probably that he's gotten himself in a mess with me. He puts the cupholder and bag o
