Harley~

'You must be truthful with him at some point; you couldn't even look him in the eye while telling your orphanage story.'

'Yes, Rae, I am aware.' It isn't easy to tell someone that your father is the source of all evil. I've gotten you a date at least.'

'You did, and I thank you for that. If you would allow them to mark us, Zeek and I could work it all out without you humans getting in the way.

'I'd bet, Harley~

'How am I to hide his mark?'

'You aren't supposed to!'

I hear the engine of the tow truck coming down the gravel path, and as much as I hate doing it, I break contact with Nick and get to my feet, a little surprised that my head didn't spin this time. Marty, the tow truck driver, hooks up to the van's back.

"Anything else, Detective?" Marty asked.

I was about to say no when Nick jumped in. "Yeah, you can give us a ride out."

My relief was undeniable; I didn't have to walk back, and I knew Nick had requested the ride for my benefit. If my life had depended on it, I couldn't have stopped the smile that crossed my face as I climbed into the tow truck's cab. It was nice to have someone watch out for me. Nick is so large that we have to crowd close together to fit in the seat, and I like that too.

The squad room was bustling when we returned. I knew the proverbial shit had hit the fan. Captain Howard comes out of nowhere in a rush, gathering Nick, me, Graves, and Brock. We all head down the hall to the SCIF room and take seats around the conference table, except for the Captain, who stands in front of us.

"Detective Graves, Detective Brock, this is special agent Nick Reins from the FBI." Mitch gestures toward Nick and takes a seat himself.

That's when the light bulb goes on over Sheila's head. She looks between Nick and me, then at Nick again as if he were a tall glass of water and she were thirsty. We both growl at her.

"What's going on, Captain?" I asked.

"We got a call from Culver City." He opened the file he carried and slid it to me. "A couple of hikers found this guy at the mountain basin. Hogtied and fried with no head."

Nick asked. "What made them consider him to be connected to our stalker?"

"The method of torture is the same." Captain Howard explains. "Belinda can match the rope to the fibers embedded in Cervantes' neck. Culver City is sending us the body since the FBI is already involved here." He points to Nick and me. "You two are going to Culer City to meet with the detectives who investigated the crime scene and have a look for yourselves."

My stomach does somersaults at the thought of being alone with Nick. I can feel his eyes, but I stay focused on my Captain. "I can be ready in about an hour."

We all exited the SCIF room together, Captain heading off toward his office, and Detective Brock going to his desk. Sheila falls beside Nick. Rae is growling at her, though I shush her, it has little effect.

"Agent Reins, I saw you at McGilleys last week. If you need a guide, I would love to show you around our fair city if you have time." Sheila batted her eyelashes at Nick.

Nick glances over at me. "Thank you, Detective Graves, but I am mate-married."

Shelia walks away empty-handed and disappointed. It's better than the alternative, so maybe I should let him mark me and wear a turtleneck in the 101° heat so no one sees his bite.

"I just need to get a few things from home, and then I will be ready. I can meet you back here in about an hour."

Nick appeared devastated, but he recovered before revealing too much. "Let me have your number so we can keep in touch."

My tires aren't rolling toward the street before my phone rings. "Yes, Agent Reins?"

"Call me your Wolfman." The sensual tone in his voice has got my cooter leaking again; what in the world am I going to do with him?

We purred at them through the speakers. "You like that, do you?"

"It gets me hotter than peanut oil in a deep fryer!" I can almost see the smile on his handsome face. "Ok, Wolfman, I can't wait to run wild with you."

"Woo-hoo! Yes, ma'am, that's what I am talking about! I can't wait for the world to know you are mine, Amante. We need to make that happen."

"I can't let you mark me now. It isn't the right time or place, not because I don't want you to. After this case is over, I am leaving LA. I'm hoping maybe you will come with me. If the answer is no, I understand, but I have to be honest, I am still leaving."

"So it isn't me you are running from, Amante?"

Suddenly, I have a golf ball-sized lump in my throat as I pull into my apartment's parking lot and park. "Who says I am running, Nick? I will see you soon." I kill the engine and the phone.

'You know he will not let it go. He is going to find out the truth on his own anyway, so you need to tell him about Ian first.'

'I want to see Melinda before I decide. If we are this powerful guardian, there is no need to tell Nick. I can use my powers on whoever my father sends after me, and him too, should he get the balls to come, once I know how and what they are, that is.'

'And what if Nick doesn't want to go with us?'

'I don't know, Rae. Would you want to continue living in the human world with him if he didn't want to run off and play werewolf with us?'

Harley~The universe doesn't listen, and the next thing I see before me is the most beautiful, peaceful place I could ever imagine. I somehow know that it is Sauther Lake; I am home. Not wasting another moment on the nightmare, I step into the scene, turn, and see Lauren has appeared beside me. "I am ready to come home, Lauren."Lauren turned to face me, hummed a familiar tune, and started moving her hands in unfamiliar patterns all around me. My insides heated as her movements intensified, as if she were branding something on my soul. She put the stone she'd held into my hand when she was done. "You don't have to be alone anymore, Harley." She disappeared into the mist. "Wait, I have so many questions!I'm once again alone in the darkness. "Let me go home!" Someone or something must have taken pity on me, as I find myself back in Melinda's living room, still on my knees with my face buried in my hands. The fire has gone out in more ways than one. "Did you find what you were looking

Harley~ Nick pampered me in every way he saw fit, and I was loving it. One might not put a bounty hunter and an attentive caregiver in the same category, but I sure would now. After my bubble bath, he put me to bed and snuggled close to me, wrapping me in his cocoon as if I were his butterfly about to emerge. Delighted and satisfied, I closed my eyes and drifted into a peaceful sleep; however, it didn't last long. My eyes flew open as I woke in a cold sweat after finding myself alone in the delivery room. With no Ben or Nick by my side, I clung to Nick, only breathing again when I was sure it was just a dream. My eyes filled with tears, and I closed them as tightly as possible as I begged the goddess to hear my prayer. This had to be Nick's child growing inside of me; it just has to be! 'You don't need to get yourself so worked up, Harley. It isn't good for you or our baby. We will know for sure tomorrow, but it won't matter to Nick.' 'Maybe not right away, but eventually, he

Nick~About ten minutes later, I burst through the door of her apartment to find Harley pacing the floor. Of course, I reach for her, but she backs away from me, a feeling I don't like."Sit." She gestures toward the sofa, and I take a seat."What is wrong, Amante?"With tears streaming down her cheeks, she wrings her hands and paces the floor in front of me. "I am pregnant, Nick.""That's amazing; why are you crying, Harley?""Shut up, damn it, Nick, listen to me for a minute; it's not that simple because I don't know who the baby belongs to."I have never been so high, or so low, so quickly; Harley stops in front of me as if she's waiting for her punishment, but I don't have any to give. There's no doubt in my mind that Harley loves me, and I can clearly see that she is already punishing herself enough; still, she backs away as I reach for her."There's more, Nick."What more could they possibly be? She looked at me, and it didn't matter. "Tell me whatever you like, but I've already

Harley~We arrived at the station separately and were on time for the morning briefing. As I suspected, the stalker hasn't returned to either branch, and nobody has used the debit card. A weary sigh escaped me somehow. I'm feeling neither shocked nor surprised. Captain Howard wants us back on the streets in full force, but I reminded him of my appointment. My Wolfman may not be an agent, but he is smart."I'll be out of the office sometime this afternoon as well. My SAC is expecting an update on our progress."I focused on the Captain. "Did we get anything from Peter?" "Yes, a couple of descriptions, but neither of the sketches matches our suspects. I need you both back here ASAP."Howard calls the powwow, and we all leave the SCIF room. I want a moment alone with Nick before my appointment, but I know it's not appropriate. He is in my head, before I get out of the parking lot, telling me he loves me and will wait to hear from me, and I smile as I return his sentiment.'He's worried

Harley~Nick grabs his still-packed bag from our trip to Culer City, and we head up the stairs. He has no trouble with the lock that sticks and hands me my keys after opening the door. My stomach is doing somersaults as I flip on the ceiling fan light and put the keys on the hook by the door before turning to face him."I'm sure it's not what you're used to, but it's comfortable."He tossed his bag onto the sofa and pulled me into him. "As long as you are with me, a cardboard box under a bridge would satisfy me, Amante."I'm picturing our cardboard house rocking on that bridge and feeling the impact of my dirty thoughts on my cheeks. Nick grinned at me as if he'd read my mind. Taking his hand, I led him down the hallway to my bedroom, which I instantly regretted.Nick leveled me with a cocky grin when he smelled himself coming from my bed. His eyes are searching for the source as mine focus on the pillowcase from the hotel, and I feel the heat creep up my cheeks all over again. As a d

Harley~Perhaps against his better judgment, Nick leaves me alone in the car again. It's a wonder he looks almost as good going as he does coming. The way his ass fills those jeans starts a fire as I watch him until he enters the Bodega. My soul is singing the song of his admission of love for me as I close my eyes and rest my head on the rest. Although it had been a Freudian slip on Nick's part, I knew he meant it. Beautiful pinks and yellows claim the sky as the sun sets, and a cool breeze blows off the bay. Not being able to resist, I leaned forward, turned the switch, and rolled down the windows. The pungent smell of diesel fuel from the bay also wafts through the car, silencing my soul song and snatching me back to reality; now I am fighting the door handle for release.Nick calls my name as he returns to find me leaning out of the car seat and heaving. Only the goddess knows what he's thinking, probably that he's gotten himself in a mess with me. He puts the cupholder and bag o
