Chapter 1

Tyler Robinson laughed and patted my head.

"Cleo, were you scared stupid? Your courage hasn't improved, and you've grown even dumber from the scare."

Freya Green bickered with him skillfully.

"Don't worry, we'll slowly help her get better."

I pursed my lips tightly, looking seriously at the two of them bantering.

"This isn't helping me. It's bullying."

Freya's smile froze.

"Cleo, that hurts. I spend time helping you, yet it's bullying in your eyes?

"Fine, then I will also go ride what I am most afraid of. That way it's fair, right?"

She walked toward the roller coaster as she spoke.

Tyler frowned at me and grabbed her.

"Don't force it. Last time you even cried from fear. I'll go with you."

I just stood there, unmoving.

Just now, when riding the drop tower, Tyler had said to me, "You can't be this childish, needing someone to accompany you just for an amusement park ride."

The roller coaster stopped, and Freya chattered away.

"It's so much fun when someone plays with you! Cleo, look, it's not even that scary at all!"

However, nobody accompanied me.

Tyler looked at my expressionless face.

"If you're still angry, how about we accompany you to ride the drop tower again?"

But this time, they chose the two-person drop tower, the "couple special".

Only by hugging tightly face-to-face would the seats not tilt during the ascent.

An advertising slogan was engraved on the equipment: [The deepest trust for the closest person.]

When the staff mentioned there was an extra person, Tyler glanced at me.

"Since you were so frightened last time, Cleo, skip it. I'll go on with Freya."

They laughed and sat down face-to-face.

How strange.

When they needed amusement, I wasn't allowed to be afraid.

Now, I was allowed to be?

I stared at them as they buckled their safety harnesses.

"Tyler, let's call off our engagement party in five days."

Tyler looked at the seriousness on my face, and his expression changed.

"Cleo, don't be silly. Let's talk about it once I get down!"

After the round of the game ended, they finally caught up with me outside the apartment complex.

Mom was sitting and chatting with people downstairs.

She frowned when she saw me.

"What's wrong? Not having fun?"

Freya suddenly linked her arm through Mom's with an aggrieved look.

"Andrea, I was helping Cleo build her courage, but she said I was bullying her. She also wants to break up with Tyler."

Tyler also followed up to join the conversation.

"Andrea, it's okay if Cleo doesn't want to, but breaking up shouldn't be mentioned so casually."

Mom's face darkened instantly.

She pinched my ear.

"Just because you say you won't marry means you won't? Are you trying to rebel?"

Neighbors gathered around, and Mom spoke louder and louder.

"This child is cowardly. Tyler and Freya were kind enough to help her, and she doesn't even know what's good for her!

"Do you want to stay cooped up at home and be useless for the rest of your life?"

Looking at the neighbors gossiping, my face felt hot, like I had been slapped.

Tyler stood out and defended me.

"Andrea, it doesn't matter if Cleo is like this. I will protect her."

Hearing this, Mom grew even angrier with me and dragged me upstairs.

The door closed, and my tears could not help but fall onto the floor.

"Mom, why is it that even though I'm your daughter, you always believe others?"

Mom let out a cold laugh.

"Don't I know you? I gave birth to you, after all.

"You've been afraid of everything since you were small, not like Freya. You can't do anything well... Just like your useless father!"

Her words carved into my bones like a knife.

But I also really wanted to be brave.

When I was young, money was tight. Mom had high expectations and took my father's honesty as uselessness, scolding him about how this was why he couldn't make money.

So she "built" my courage from childhood.

At three years old, I was afraid of the dark. So she locked me in the storage room. I cried until I lost my voice and still got beaten when I came out.

When I became afraid of water, she pushed me into a basin. If I didn't endure it, there was another beating.

She said this was desensitization.

However, I grew even more afraid.

Because doing something wrong meant being punished, and being punished proved even more that I was useless.

Later, when I turned eight, Dad divorced Mom, even if it meant giving me up.

From then on, I dared not do anything.

I was afraid that if I were wrong, Mom wouldn't want me either.

However, Freya, who grew up with me, was elegant, sweet-tongued, and liked by adults.

Mom would always say, "If only Freya were my daughter."

Later, she simply took her in as a goddaughter.

She told me to get into my room and reflect.

"If you leave Tyler, who else doing charity would look at you favorably?"

She called Freya and Tyler, her tone as gentle as if she were a changed person.

"Freya, I'm making Cleo apologize to you guys. Come to the house for dinner tonight."

I leaned against the door panel and wiped away my tears, dialing a friend's phone number.

"Are you still short of people for the team going to the mountains to teach in five days?"

"Are you sure? There is no internet or signal, and there are snakes. Aren't you afraid?"

"No."

"Then what about your engagement? How will you explain this to your mom? Won't she tear you apart?"

I gripped the phone tightly.

"Elsie, I want to run away. For once, I want to be brave."

I looked at him. There were tears in his eyes, but his gaze carried a seriousness that had never been there before."Don't you have to work?""I took a long leave of absence."I stared at him. "Tyler, what are you doing here? I won't go back with you just because you stay."He didn't speak, his eyes turning only a bit red."You don't have to go back with me. I'll just stay right here. You go about your business, and I won't disturb you."Every day after that, Tyler stayed at the village elementary school. He helped Mr. Davis repair the leaking roof, helped Mrs. Smith chop firewood, and played basketball in the courtyard with the children. He bought a pile of food and supplies, but every time he handed them to me, I'd say, "No need." So, he would place them at the door of my dormitory without saying much else.He persisted for a month until the rainy season set in. That night, a torrential rain suddenly poured down in the mountains.A rumbling sound came from outside as s

She stood next to Tyler, her eye rims still red."Alright, what are you putting on a show for?"Freya repeated herself once more, her voice half a pitch higher than just now."Cleo, you've made enough of a scene, haven't you? Do you have any idea how anxious Andrea has been during the month you ran away? "Tyler looked for you every day, to the point of not even wanting his job anymore."He also rejected my confession, saying he likes you. Throwing a tantrum here for others to see, do you think you're so great?""I don't think I'm great.""Then stop putting on a show and follow..."I called her name."Freya."She paused."You said I won against you for once. What did I win against you?"Her lips moved."Since we were little, Mom preferred you, classmates revolved around you, and even the first person Tyler liked was you—"Tyler frowned. "That's not true!"I ignored him, continuing to look at Freya. "Did I win a mother who belittles me, or a boyfriend who ignores me? For

Mom spoke first. She sized me up from head to toe, her brows knitting together."How did you become so thin? And hiding away in a place like this, your face is so tanned. What kind of clothes are you wearing? Where did these pants come from?"She fired off a string of questions in that same tone of impatience and disgust. Her voice also carried a kind of blame that said, "How did you make yourself look like this again?" If it were the past, I would have already lowered my head to tug at my pants.I look down at myself, at the coarse cloth pants given to me by Mr. Davis' wife."They're fine. These pants are stain-resistant."Mom choked.Tyler took a step forward, the plastic bag swaying as he held it in his hand."Cleo, we brought you food. The brand of biscuits you love, and some fruit..."His voice was a little hoarse. His gaze never left my face, as if confirming whether I was still whole."I don't eat those anymore. I've never liked eating them. The steamed buns here are

The bus bumped along the winding mountain road for five hours.Elsie sat next to me, sleeping like a log. Her head was crooked against my shoulder, her drool nearly dripping onto my sleeve.I didn't push her away.I needed her to lean on me. Otherwise, sitting alone in this swaying, rattling iron box heading deep into the mountains, I was afraid I would jump off the bus and flee back. After getting off the bus, we transferred twice more. The so-called school was three one-story houses pieced together. One was the classroom, the other was the kitchen-slash-office, and the remaining one was a dormitory. There were two wooden bunk beds in the dormitory.During the night, someone knocked on the door.A small slip of paper was stuffed beneath the door crack.[Ms. Cleo, are you asleep? I'm Yasmine. I was worried you might be afraid of the dark, so I left my nightlight at your door. Open the door and take it.]Yasmine was my first student here.I pulled the door open with light ste

Tyler picked up his phone and dialed my number, but couldn't get through. He tried again. Still, no answer.Tyler flipped through the contact list. Colleagues said they hadn't seen me come into the company today, stating I had called in sick. When he called my friend Elsie, her phone was turned off too.The sentence I said while looking at him that night suddenly flashed through his mind."Forget it. Just take her."He grabbed his jacket and headed out. "I'll go check her house."Freya shouted from behind, "Then what about these decorations...""Leave them for now!"Mom frowned. "This girl has done nothing but cause trouble. You go ahead. I'll keep an eye on things here."Tyler drove and rushed to my apartment building. The security guard said he saw me dragging a suitcase out this morning and had even greeted me.His heart sank a bit, and he asked where I went, but the guard shook his head.He went upstairs and knocked on the door for a long time, but no one answered.W

Mom jumped up instantly. "You've learned to talk back now? As if you are so well-liked."You have the exact same disposition as your useless father! You'll never measure up to Freya."I closed the door while she continued to rant into the night. So I put on headphones and began packing my luggage.Early the next morning, I went out to buy the things needed for the mountains.Snake repellent, mosquito repellent, a first aid kit...When I returned, the house door was slightly ajar.I could hear talking and laughing in the living room.First was Freya's voice."At the engagement party, when Cleo goes up on stage, how about we suddenly release something to build her courage?"Release a fake snake or a dead rat?"Tyler remained silent for so long that Freya became annoyed."Why do you have that expression on your face? If you don't agree, then just ignore me!"In the end, he let out a sigh."Fine... but this is really the final time. I don't want Cleo to be frightened again."
