Chapter 3

Author: Pomelo Luck
At the party, Freya had a few drinks and suddenly started sharing embarrassing stories from my childhood.

"You guys have no idea, but Cleo is really timid."

"In middle school, she was locked in the equipment room for an entire night. She didn't even dare to knock on the door, crying by herself until her throat went hoarse."

A colleague wiped away tears from laughing so hard.

"Cleo, that's ridiculous."

Freya nudged Tyler with her elbow. "If you don't believe it, ask Tyler."

Tyler froze for a moment, looking at my embarrassed state.

However, with Freya tugging at his sleeve, he still spoke up.

"Yes. Back then, when the teacher asked her what was wrong, she was so scared that she hid behind my back and didn't dare to lift her head."

The entire table erupted in roars of laughter.

My fingernails dug into my flesh.

I gathered my courage and spoke up. "Can you stop? I don't like being discussed."

Dead silence fell over the room.

A colleague leaned over and whispered to me in a low voice.

"Don't pick a fight with her. Freya is well-connected. Mr. Robinson specifically gave a heads-up because he was afraid people would make things difficult for her."

She paused, then said, "Since Freya has known you since childhood, you should also know Mr. Robinson, right? How come..."

I froze.

I recalled wanting to be closer to Tyler and fighting tooth and nail to get into this company.

When we ran into each other downstairs, he didn't even greet me.

"I don't want others to go out of their way for you just because of me, Cleo. You should rely on yourself to grow."

The corners of my mouth twitched.

"Just classmates. Not close."

During the latter half of the dinner party, someone egged everyone on to play an escape room.

It was hospital-themed with a five-star horror rating.

Clearly, this was targeted at me.

When it came time to group up, everyone avoided me.

A colleague said half-jokingly, "We're afraid of being dragged down if we're in a group with you."

In the end, only Tyler, Freya, and I were left.

Tyler gave me a conflicted look and stood next to Freya.

"Cleo, this is a good opportunity to build your courage. Try it by yourself."

Everyone entered together in pairs, except for me.

It was as if I had returned to my childhood.

Mom didn't like me, nor did the other kids.

Whenever it came time to split into groups, no one ever chose me.

So I wouldn't want to play anymore and wanted to go home. Yet Mom would still press me down and send me back to the line.

"You only know how to shrink back like a mouse. If you learn to be like Freya, someone will choose you!"

I stood all alone under the tree.

Tyler proactively walked over. "I'll be in a group with you."

However, when Freya's partner left, he still ran over to find Freya.

Twenty years, and I was still alone.

In the past, I thought he was the one who came to lead me out of cowardice and low self-esteem.

It turned out he had been holding Freya's hand all along, watching me flounder alone in deep water.

The staff member at the door asked me, "Hey, beautiful, are you by yourself?"

I clenched my fists.

"By myself it is."

The door pushed open, and my vision went completely black.

The scent of disinfectant, flashing red lights, and mannequins covered in white sheets.

At a corner, Freya suddenly leaped out.

My feet slipped, and I crashed onto the floor, knocking against the leg of a prop bed.

The lights all around lit up instantly, followed by a roar of laughter.

"Cleo, you're such a scaredy-cat!"

My knee was scraped, and a lump swelled up on my forehead.

I patted the dust off my body, turned around, and walked out.

Tyler chased after me.

"Are you angry? Freya's just looking out for you."

Enduring the pain, I shook my head.

"Not angry."

He touched my forehead and smiled.

"You're the best, Cleo."

Everyone dispersed.

Tyler was going to take Freya home.

"She has to go back to her apartment on the outskirts and is afraid to go alone. Just take a taxi back by yourself."

I looked into his eyes. "Why is it that when it comes to Freya, you don't think she's timid and needs to work on it?"

He opened his mouth but failed to answer.

Suddenly, I didn't want to pursue the already known answer anymore.

"Forget it. Just take her."

Returning home, Mom was sitting on the sofa, snacking on trail mix.

"Tyler brought you back?"

"He went to drop Freya off."

Mom threw the crumbs into the trash can.

"Look at you… So useless."

"Tyler comes from a good family background and has a great job, and Freya matches him so well. Someone would have to be blind to look at you, yet you're still not satisfied."

I looked deeply at Mom.

"Mom, Freya is indeed more worthy of Tyler than I am. She's certainly a better fit for being your daughter, too."

I looked at him. There were tears in his eyes, but his gaze carried a seriousness that had never been there before."Don't you have to work?""I took a long leave of absence."I stared at him. "Tyler, what are you doing here? I won't go back with you just because you stay."He didn't speak, his eyes turning only a bit red."You don't have to go back with me. I'll just stay right here. You go about your business, and I won't disturb you."Every day after that, Tyler stayed at the village elementary school. He helped Mr. Davis repair the leaking roof, helped Mrs. Smith chop firewood, and played basketball in the courtyard with the children. He bought a pile of food and supplies, but every time he handed them to me, I'd say, "No need." So, he would place them at the door of my dormitory without saying much else.He persisted for a month until the rainy season set in. That night, a torrential rain suddenly poured down in the mountains.A rumbling sound came from outside as s

She stood next to Tyler, her eye rims still red."Alright, what are you putting on a show for?"Freya repeated herself once more, her voice half a pitch higher than just now."Cleo, you've made enough of a scene, haven't you? Do you have any idea how anxious Andrea has been during the month you ran away? "Tyler looked for you every day, to the point of not even wanting his job anymore."He also rejected my confession, saying he likes you. Throwing a tantrum here for others to see, do you think you're so great?""I don't think I'm great.""Then stop putting on a show and follow..."I called her name."Freya."She paused."You said I won against you for once. What did I win against you?"Her lips moved."Since we were little, Mom preferred you, classmates revolved around you, and even the first person Tyler liked was you—"Tyler frowned. "That's not true!"I ignored him, continuing to look at Freya. "Did I win a mother who belittles me, or a boyfriend who ignores me? For

Mom spoke first. She sized me up from head to toe, her brows knitting together."How did you become so thin? And hiding away in a place like this, your face is so tanned. What kind of clothes are you wearing? Where did these pants come from?"She fired off a string of questions in that same tone of impatience and disgust. Her voice also carried a kind of blame that said, "How did you make yourself look like this again?" If it were the past, I would have already lowered my head to tug at my pants.I look down at myself, at the coarse cloth pants given to me by Mr. Davis' wife."They're fine. These pants are stain-resistant."Mom choked.Tyler took a step forward, the plastic bag swaying as he held it in his hand."Cleo, we brought you food. The brand of biscuits you love, and some fruit..."His voice was a little hoarse. His gaze never left my face, as if confirming whether I was still whole."I don't eat those anymore. I've never liked eating them. The steamed buns here are

The bus bumped along the winding mountain road for five hours.Elsie sat next to me, sleeping like a log. Her head was crooked against my shoulder, her drool nearly dripping onto my sleeve.I didn't push her away.I needed her to lean on me. Otherwise, sitting alone in this swaying, rattling iron box heading deep into the mountains, I was afraid I would jump off the bus and flee back. After getting off the bus, we transferred twice more. The so-called school was three one-story houses pieced together. One was the classroom, the other was the kitchen-slash-office, and the remaining one was a dormitory. There were two wooden bunk beds in the dormitory.During the night, someone knocked on the door.A small slip of paper was stuffed beneath the door crack.[Ms. Cleo, are you asleep? I'm Yasmine. I was worried you might be afraid of the dark, so I left my nightlight at your door. Open the door and take it.]Yasmine was my first student here.I pulled the door open with light ste

Tyler picked up his phone and dialed my number, but couldn't get through. He tried again. Still, no answer.Tyler flipped through the contact list. Colleagues said they hadn't seen me come into the company today, stating I had called in sick. When he called my friend Elsie, her phone was turned off too.The sentence I said while looking at him that night suddenly flashed through his mind."Forget it. Just take her."He grabbed his jacket and headed out. "I'll go check her house."Freya shouted from behind, "Then what about these decorations...""Leave them for now!"Mom frowned. "This girl has done nothing but cause trouble. You go ahead. I'll keep an eye on things here."Tyler drove and rushed to my apartment building. The security guard said he saw me dragging a suitcase out this morning and had even greeted me.His heart sank a bit, and he asked where I went, but the guard shook his head.He went upstairs and knocked on the door for a long time, but no one answered.W

Mom jumped up instantly. "You've learned to talk back now? As if you are so well-liked."You have the exact same disposition as your useless father! You'll never measure up to Freya."I closed the door while she continued to rant into the night. So I put on headphones and began packing my luggage.Early the next morning, I went out to buy the things needed for the mountains.Snake repellent, mosquito repellent, a first aid kit...When I returned, the house door was slightly ajar.I could hear talking and laughing in the living room.First was Freya's voice."At the engagement party, when Cleo goes up on stage, how about we suddenly release something to build her courage?"Release a fake snake or a dead rat?"Tyler remained silent for so long that Freya became annoyed."Why do you have that expression on your face? If you don't agree, then just ignore me!"In the end, he let out a sigh."Fine... but this is really the final time. I don't want Cleo to be frightened again."
