Chapter 6: Growing Tension

last update publish date: 2026-06-17 16:46:23

The snowstorm refused to leave. By midday, Ryan checked the roads again and shook his head. “We’re stuck here at least one more night. The snowplow can’t keep up.”

I glanced at Ethan. His jaw tightened, but his eyes met mine with quiet heat. The secret between us was becoming harder to hide.

We spent the afternoon playing cards at the small wooden table. Ryan sat across from us, focused on the game. Under the table, Ethan’s leg pressed against mine. The simple contact sent warmth through my body. I tried to concentrate, but every time Ryan looked away, Ethan’s hand brushed my knee.

“You’ve been quiet today, Ava,” Ryan said suddenly. “Everything okay?”

I forced a smile. “Just tired from the storm.”

Ethan gave my hand a gentle squeeze under the table. The touch was quick, but it made my heart race. Guilt twisted in my stomach. Ryan trusted Ethan completely. He had no idea his best friend was falling for his little sister.

When Ryan stepped outside to clear snow from the truck, Ethan pulled me into the hallway.

“I hate hiding this,” he said softly. He rested his hands on my waist and kissed me. The kiss was warm and slow. I kissed him back, my fingers gripping his shirt. For a few seconds, the world disappeared. Only his touch mattered.

We broke apart when we heard Ryan’s boots at the door. My face felt hot. Ethan stepped back quickly and picked up a book like nothing happened.

The rest of the day passed in small moments. Ethan helped Ryan fix a loose window while I made dinner. Every time our eyes met across the room, the air felt heavy. I wanted to be close to him, but Ryan’s presence reminded me how wrong this was.

After dinner, Ryan yawned. “I’m beat. I’ll crash on the couch again.”

As soon as Ryan’s breathing grew steady, Ethan and I slipped into the bedroom. He closed the door quietly and pulled me into his arms.

“I’ve been waiting for this all day,” he whispered. We lay on the bed facing each other. He stroked my cheek gently, then kissed me again. His lips moved softly against mine. His hand rested on my back, holding me close but never pushing too far.

“I know this is risky because of Ryan,” he said between kisses. “But I don’t want to stop.”

“Me neither,” I admitted. The words felt scary but true. Being near him made me feel seen and wanted.

We stayed like that for a long time — kissing, whispering, and holding each other. The storm outside matched the storm inside me. Part of me felt terrible for hiding this from my brother. Another part never wanted this feeling to end.

Late in the night, a loud sound woke us. Ryan was moving around in the living room.

“You two awake?” he called out. “I thought I heard voices.”

Ethan answered calmly, “Just talking about the storm, bro. Go back to sleep.”

Ryan paused for a moment that felt too long. “Alright. Get some rest.”

The footsteps moved away. Ethan pulled me closer under the blanket. His heart beat fast against mine.

“That was too close,” he whispered. “If he opens this door…”

He didn’t finish the sentence. We both knew what could happen.

The next morning, the snow had finally started to slow. Ryan checked his phone. “Signal is back. I just got a message from town. They say the main road might be clear by tomorrow afternoon.”

My stomach dropped. Tomorrow we might leave the lake house. The thought of going back to normal life — pretending nothing happened between me and Ethan — felt impossible.

Ethan looked at me across the room. His eyes held a silent promise. But the real question hung in the air: how much longer could we keep this secret before everything broke?

The next few days passed in a careful rhythm. During the day, everything looked normal. Ryan went to work, Ethan spent time at his garage, and I tried to focus on my college assignments. But at night, the house felt different. Every creak of the floorboards made me nervous. Every time Ryan looked at us a little too long, my stomach tightened. One evening, Ryan had to work late on a project. The house was quiet again. Ethan texted me: “Come downstairs when you’re free. I’m in the living room.”I waited a few minutes before going down. Ethan was sitting on the couch, the TV on low. He smiled when he saw me and patted the spot next to him. I sat close, but not too close — just in case.“I missed talking to you today,” he said softly. He took my hand under a throw pillow. “It’s getting harder pretending nothing’s changed.”“Same here,” I replied. “I keep thinking about the lake house. How simple it felt when it was just us and the snowstorm.”Ethan nodded. He gently rubbed his thumb over

Ryan’s car had barely left the driveway when the house felt different. Quieter. Safer. Ethan and I stood in the hallway for a second, just looking at each other. The chance to be alone without worrying felt like a gift and a risk at the same time.“Come here,” Ethan said softly. He took my hand and led me to the living room couch. We sat close, facing each other. “We don’t have long, but I needed this.”I nodded, my heart beating fast. “The family dinner next week… it’s going to be hard. Mom, Dad, Ryan — everyone together. How are we supposed to act normal?”Ethan brushed his thumb over my knuckles. “We’ll figure it out. I’ve known your family for years. But now everything feels different because of you.” He paused, his eyes serious. “I meant what I said at the lake house. This isn’t casual for me, Ava. I care about you. A lot.”His words warmed me from the inside. I leaned forward and rested my head on his shoulder. “I care about you too. But every time Ryan jokes around or talks abo

The garage felt like our secret world. Tools hung neatly on the walls, and the faint smell of oil and metal filled the air. Ethan had cleared a small space in the back office with two old chairs and a tiny table. For the first time since returning home, we had real privacy.“You sure Ryan won’t come here?” I asked, sitting close to him on the worn couch.Ethan shook his head. “He’s busy with his friends. We have at least two hours.” He took my hand, tracing gentle circles on my palm. “I’ve been thinking about you nonstop since we got back.”His words made my heart flutter. Being with him felt so natural, yet every second carried weight. “I keep worrying about Ryan,” I admitted. “He’s always been there for me. If he finds out…”Ethan pulled me closer until my head rested on his shoulder. “I know. He’s my best friend. The bro code says I should stay away. But when I’m with you, none of that matters. You make me want to be better, Ava.”We sat like that for a while, talking softly. He to

The drive home from the lake house felt longer than usual. The roads were finally clear, but the snow still covered the fields on both sides. Ryan drove while chatting happily about getting back to normal life. Ethan sat in the passenger seat, and I was in the back. Every time our eyes met in the rearview mirror, my heart skipped.I kept replaying the past few days in my head. The snowstorm had changed everything. The kisses, the quiet talks, the way Ethan held me — it all felt like a beautiful dream. But now, in the daylight and away from the cabin, reality was sinking in.We reached home in the late afternoon. Our parents were away for the week, so the house was quiet. Ryan stretched as he carried his bag inside. “Finally! I’m going to take a long shower and order pizza. You two good?”“Yeah,” Ethan and I said at the same time.Ryan laughed. “You guys are acting weird since the storm. Must be the cold messing with your heads.” He headed upstairs without waiting for an answer. The mo

The snow had finally started to thin out by the next morning. Ryan checked his phone and let out a relieved sigh. “Good news. The main road should be clear enough by this evening. We can head back home tomorrow morning if the weather holds.”My stomach twisted. Tomorrow. The thought of leaving the lake house and going back to real life made everything feel heavier. Back home, Ethan would be just my brother’s best friend again. I would have to pretend none of this happened.Ethan caught my eye from across the room. His expression was calm for Ryan’s sake, but I saw the same worry in his gaze. The secret we shared had grown too big for this small cabin. We spent the morning packing a few things and cleaning up. Ryan kept busy chopping more wood outside, giving us rare moments alone. Ethan found me in the bedroom folding blankets.“Ava,” he said quietly, closing the door behind him. He stepped close but didn’t touch me right away. “We need to talk about what happens when we leave here.”
