RAINE’S POV

I froze in my tracks. Shocked at her words. It was mean and unnecessary and even though I knew she was deliberately targeting me, I couldn’t help but feel a little bad about it.

I was stuck while my mind struggled to process her words. When I finally opened my mouth to speak, Zayne beat me to it.

“Mom!” He called sharply. From his tone, it was clear that he didn’t like what his mom had said.

Cyril sipped water from his tumbler, shooting daggers at her.

“I wouldn’t take you,” he said, his voice cold as steel, “even if you came with a billion-dollar cheque.”

Diane’s eyes widened. I think everyone at the table stopped breathing for a second.

“Don’t cross me now, Diane. Your daddy is not as intimidating anymore.” Cyril added sternly.

My eyes flicked to Diane. She looked… stunned. Like she wasn’t used to people telling her off, especially not Cyril.

I didn’t mean to, but I smiled. A big grin spread across my face.

Her words didn’t hurt as much as they first did. It had su

CYRIL’S POV I knew I was fucking going to lose it the second I saw that goddamn post. ‘A new age and a love that feels safe.’ I muttered, shaking my head. What a load of shit! From the fake-ass caption to the carefully yet equally fake framed photo. It was all bullshit. I don’t know the fucking move Raine was trying to make posting some random guy’s hand like that, but I sure as hell was going to find out.I stared at the screen for a good minute, before tossing my phone onto the passenger seat beside me. I didn’t call. I didn’t text again. I was done begging her to answer me.It was really late and I could have waited till morning but honestly, I didn’t care. Instead, I drove to her penthouse and walked in with the spare key. The place was quiet and the half-drawn curtains cloaked the rooms in the darkness. As I took a step forward, I spotted Raine curled up on the couch with Chloe snoring softly beside her. An empty pint of ice cream sat on the coffee table. Next to it was a box

RAINE’S POVTalon and I sat there a bit longer, sipping the last of our now lukewarm coffees. The cafe was starting to fill up fast. People were moving past us in waves. It was past noon already, so most were here on lunch breaks. Otto and Chloe had left long ago. Talon tapped the table, pulling my attention back. “I’ve got more ideas for cute couple photos,” he said, grinning like he actually believed this could be fun. “What if I hold your face and you pretend to laugh? Or we do that forehead-touch thing. People eat that up. Ooh, or you sit on the table and I look up at you with sad puppy eyes.” I nodded a little, but I wasn’t really there. My mind kept drifting. Talon reached out to tap my hands. “Hey, things are going to work out.”“You’ve said that before,” I murmured, eyes on the table.“I know. But looking at you right now it’s easy to tell you aren’t convinced. You are doubtful.” “I’m not.” I said. “I’m just tired.”He looked at me weird, like he didn’t know how to respond

RAINE’S POV“Talon, no.” I practically choked on my latte. “We can’t date. That’s insane.” He didn’t even blink. Just leaned back in his chair like he expected that reaction. “I’m not asking you if you were in love with me, Raine. It’ll be just an arrangement. A cover.”“I…I just…” I rubbed my forehead and stared out the window. “This is crazy. My brain can’t process this right now.”Talon leaned forward, elbows on the table. “You said you want to protect Cyril, right?”I nodded, biting my bottom lip.“Then you can’t do it half-heartedly. If you’re going to take the heat off him, you’ve got to be decisive. There’s no room for waffling.”“I’m not waffling,” I muttered.“You are,” he said, but not in a mean way. “And it’s okay. You’re scared. You’ve been through a lot. But if you want the media and whoever’s stalking you to believe Cyril isn’t part of your life like that, you have to give them something else to look at.”I stared at him, heart thudding. “So you want me to fake date you

RAINE’S POVWhen I walked back into the room, the little pep talk I’d given myself in the bathroom did me no good. It was like I was being mocked for thinking that I had wits. Suddenly my hands began to shake as Daniel’s words haunted me all over again. ‘Need I remind you of the buried scandals attached to your name?’ Those particular words replayed endlessly in my head. My breathing became labored. I did my best to control it by sucking in deep breaths, one after another, as I made my way to the bed. But the minute my eyes landed on the unknown number calling on my phone screen. I realized how much of a chokehold that one call had on me. I thought I was past all this. The fear. The anxiety. But I wasn’t. I couldn’t even talk myself out of this situation. It was sad, just thinking of it, and it was crazy that I let myself believe that I could heal. I wasn’t as strong as I thought I was. Just one mention of my past and I was already spiraling. It was clear that I was a weakling and

RAINE’S POVMy phone wouldn’t stop ringing. Groaning loudly, I rolled over and squinted at the screen. It was an unknown number. I was tempted to let it go, but something pushed me to answer. “Hello?” I croaked, still half-asleep. “Good morning, Raine. This is Daniel speaking.” The voice on the other end was calm, too-smooth even. “Daniel Harken, Zayne’s grandfather.”My eyes snapped open. I sat up so fast my blanket fell to the floor.“What?” “I just wanted to congratulate you on the launch of your brand. You’re making waves I see.” he continued, like we were old friends catching up over brunch. “I’ve got a list of celebrities who are more than eager to be brand ambassadors for your brand.”I blinked, heart already pounding. “Um... thanks?”He chuckled, but it didn’t sound warm. “Good. They are the best and I can hook you with other stars but in order for me to do that you need to do me a little favor first.”That sentence made my stomach twist, like I’d eaten a rotten tuna or som

  • Breaking Daddy's Rules   112. Fuck The World.

CYRIL’S POVI walked into the study, staring at the glass of whiskey in my hands. I had intentionally left the bottle downstairs because I knew how easy it would be to drown in it tonight. My study smelled like old leather and burnt cedar. The only thing that mattered right now was my fucked up life which seemed to only get more fucked by the day.I was going to have just one drink which was in the glass in front of me. Nothing more. I owed myself that much control. I eased into the seat, the damn heater buzzing through the vents, filling the study with heat that didn’t do shit to make me feel better. My eyes wandered to my phone which I held firmly. I’d been staring at Raine’s name ever since I left Zayne’s room, like the messages I planned to send to her were going to magically write themselves. I was aware that I actually needed to type words and send. I exhaled through my nose, muttered a low “fuck it,” and finally typed it out. “Did you get home safe? Please call me when you
