Ana kept it simple. Straightforward."Tell the court why you left Jake eight years ago.""Margaret Sullivan threatened me. She said if I stayed, she would destroy both of us. She gave me fifty thousand dollars and told me to disappear. I was nineteen. Pregnant. Scared. So I took the money and left.""Why did you hide Alex from Jake?""Because I believed Margaret's threats. I thought I was protecting everyone. Jake from losing his family and career. Alex from growing up in a war zone. Myself from being destroyed by someone with unlimited resources.""Do you regret that decision?""Every single day.""Why did you come back?""I did not come back. Jake found me. I had been living in Portugal for eight years. Raising Alex alone. I never contacted Jake. Never asked for money. Never tried to use Alex a
