Emma's POV

We worked on us. Intentionally. Deliberately.

Weekly date nights became sacred. No matter what. No cancellations unless absolute emergency.

Sometimes fancy restaurants. Sometimes just walks in the park. Sometimes staying home with takeout after Alex went to sleep.

But always protected time. Just us.

Daily couple time too. After Alex went to bed, we had at least thirty minutes. Talking. Connecting. Being more than parents or business partners.

Some nights we talked about deep things. Fears. Dreams. The future.

Other nights we just existed together. Watching TV. Reading. Not talking at all.

Both mattered.

Therapy helped. I started seeing Dr. Martinez individually. Working through abandonment issues. Fear of loss. Trauma from the eight years alone.

Jake and I did couples therapy too. Learning to communicate better. To fight fair. To recognize patterns.

Slowly, something shifted.

The constant waiting for disaster? It faded. Not completely. But enough.

Jake's POVMargaret arrived at two PM exactly. Punctual as always. But she looked different. Older. Tired. The sharp edges softened somehow.Emma insisted on being present. "I am not letting you meet her alone. Not after everything.""I would not ask you to."We opened the door. Margaret stood there. No driver. No entourage. Just her."Thank you for seeing me," she said quietly. We let her in. Sat in the living room. Awkward silence.Margaret spoke first. "I need to apologize. Really apologize this time."Emma's voice was cold. "You have apologized before.""I know. And they were hollow. Manipulative. Said to get what I wanted. This is different.""How?" I asked.Margaret took a breath. Looking older than I had ever seen her."I paid Emma to leave eight years ago. I threatened her. I told her she would destroy your future. I made her believe leaving was the only option.""We know that," Emma said."But you do not know how deliberate it was. How calculated. I did not just react to find

  • Breaking Up With The Hottest Man On Ice    The Marriage Question

Jake's POVAlex's question hung in the air for days."Are you going to get married?"Emma and I danced around it. Changed the subject. Told Alex we would talk about it later. But we had to actually talk about it. Between ourselves first.Saturday, Sarah took Alex to the movies. Gave us the afternoon alone. We sat in the living room. Coffee between us. The conversation we had been avoiding."We need to talk about marriage," I said.Emma nodded. "I know.""I want to marry you. I have wanted that since we got back together. Maybe even before that.""Jake—""Let me finish. I love you. I want to build life with you. I want to make it official. Not just for Alex. For us."Emma was quiet. Then: "But we are still figuring out how to be a couple. Is not marriage too soon?""Too soon? We have an eight-year-old son together.""That is exactly why we need to be careful. If we rush and it does not work, Alex gets hurt again. He has already been through so much.""So your solution is to stay in lim

  • Breaking Up With The Hottest Man On Ice    Alex's Adjustment Issues

Emma's POV We canceled the weekend trip. Stayed home with Alex. His fever broke by Sunday. He recovered fine. But something else started happening. Alex was acting out. Small things at first. Talking back. Refusing to do homework. Crying over minor frustrations. Then bigger things. Tantrums. Defiance. Clinginess. He would not let me out of his sight. Following me from room to room. Panicking if I left for work. "What is going on with him?" Jake asked after a particularly difficult bedtime. "I do not know. Maybe he is still processing everything. The custody battle. Margaret. All the changes." "It has been months though. I thought he was adjusting." "Maybe he was. But now something is different." Tuesday, the school called. Alex got in a fight. "He pushed another student during recess. The other child fell and scraped his knee. Can you come pick him up?" I left work immediately. Drove to school. Found Alex sitting in the principal's office. Face red. Arms crossed. "Alex, w

  • Breaking Up With The Hottest Man On Ice    Balancing Act

Jake's POVBeing everything to everyone was exhausting. At work, Emma and I were business partners. Professional. Strategic. Making decisions about the company. At home, we were parents. Co-parenting Alex. Managing schedules and homework and bedtime routines. In our relationship, we were supposed to be romantic partners. Dating. Building intimacy. But the roles kept bleeding into each other.Tuesday, we had a disagreement at work. Marketing strategy for a new client. Emma wanted aggressive social media campaign. I thought it was too risky."We need to make a splash," she argued in the conference room."We need to be careful. This client is conservative. Flashy campaign could backfire.""Or it could establish us as innovative agency.""Or it could lose us the client."We went back and forth. Professional. But tense. Finally compromised on moderate approach. But the disagreement lingered. That night at home, Emma was quiet. Distant."You okay?" I asked while making dinner."Fine.""You

Emma's POVWe were lying in bed. Not sleeping. Just existing in the dark.Jake's arm around me. My head on his chest. Normal. Comfortable. But something had been bothering me for weeks."Jake? Can I ask you something?""Always.""What are we exactly?"He shifted. "What do you mean?""I mean us. Our relationship. What are we?""We are together. Are we not?""Are we? We live together. We have Alex. We work together. But we never actually... defined this."Jake was quiet. Thinking.I continued. "We were together eight years ago. Then we were not. Then you found me. Then we were fighting for custody. Then fighting to save the company. We act like we are together but we never actually started over. Not really.""You are right.""So what are we? Roommates? Co-parents? Business partners?""More than that. Obviously more than that.""But what? Are we dating? Are we still engaged? We never had that conversation."Jake sat up. Turned on the bedside lamp. Looked at me seriously."You are absolut
