Chapter 2

ผู้เขียน: Stars
Percy was stunned by the slap. He clutched his face and stared at me in disbelief.

Since the day we met, I had never lost my temper. Especially with Percy, I had always gone along with whatever he wanted. So when I hit him, he froze.

"Are you insane? You actually hit me?"

He snapped back to himself and glared at me, rage written all over his face.

I was already done. I crouched down and went back to packing my suitcase.

When Percy saw that I wasn't responding, he grew even madder. He grabbed me, hauled me up, and slammed me against the wall, pinning me there with his stare.

"Stop dodging the issue. Sabrina was kind enough to bring my stuff over, and what did you do? You hit her without even asking what happened. She's just a college student.

"How's she supposed to face her classmates after this? You're going to her campus right now and apologize to her in front of everyone. If you don't, I'll never talk to you again."

"Fine. Then don't talk to me. That's exactly what I want."

Percy tightened his grip on my collar, as if I were the one making a scene. He stared at me for a long time before finally letting go, disappointment plain on his face.

"Maisie, you've really let me down. Being obedient and sensible is one of the few good qualities you have. If you keep acting like this, you're going to regret it!"

I couldn't have cared less. "Yeah? I'd love to see how you plan to make me regret it."

The veins on his forehead stood out, his teeth grinding. He spat out one last threat before storming off and slamming the door.

The second the door shut, I slid down and sat on the floor, tears streaming down my face.

Seven years together had turned out to be nothing but a ridiculous farce. From start to finish, I had been the only one who ever caught feelings.

I even began to wonder whether all of Percy's past kindness had been nothing more than an act. The home we'd shared for seven years suddenly felt unfamiliar.

I packed up everything in the house that belonged to me, including the gifts Percy had bought and our shared photo albums. I stuffed it all into a large bag and threw it into the trash bin downstairs.

By the time I was done, it was already past midnight. Percy still hadn't come home. I didn't need to think to know where he was.

I went back to the small apartment I'd bought two years earlier. It was small, but it felt like home.

It was late. I set my luggage in the living room, took a hot shower, and got ready for bed. Just as I lay down, my phone rang.

It was Julian Ripley.

"Maisie, what did that message you sent me mean? Are you messing with me?"

He sounded urgent, but I could hear the excitement underneath it.

"I'm not messing with you. Percy cheated. I'm not marrying him. I just want to ask you one thing. You said you'd wait for me. Does that still count?"

Julian said without hesitation, "It counts. Of course, it counts. It has always counted. I'm overseas on a business trip right now. I'll be back in two months. Once I'm done, we'll get married right away, okay?"

We talked for a long time. I didn't hang up until I was so tired I could barely stay awake.

But the moment I ended the call, my phone chimed with a new message. An unknown number had sent me a photo.

It was Sabrina and Percy, pressed together. She had my necklace around her neck.

It was the one Mom had left me. It meant the world to me. Back when Percy and I were head over heels, I'd already thought of him as family, so I gave him the necklace as a token of our commitment.

I never imagined that the necklace I'd treated like a treasure would end up around another woman's neck.

I called Percy right away and demanded, "Bring my necklace back. That belonged to my mom."

He answered with self-righteous calm. "You gave it to me, so it's mine. I can do whatever I want with it. And I'm doing this for your own good. Sabrina got slapped by you, and she's still mad.

"If I hadn't gone to smooth things over with her for you, she would've called the cops already. You should be thanking me."

His tone was completely matter-of-fact.

As he spoke, Sabrina's soft, syrupy voice drifted through the phone. "So what flavor do you want today? Strawberry or orange?"

Percy got flustered and hung up.

Any trace of sleepiness was gone. My fingers tightened around my phone.

I sent Percy a message.

"If you don't return my necklace tomorrow, I'll call the cops."

Time passed quickly, and before I knew it, spring arrived the following year.I was at work when my assistant told me someone was asking to see me.It wasn't Percy or Julian. It was the last person I expected.Sabrina strutted in and slammed a marriage certificate onto my desk. "Percy and I got married. He's my husband now."I put down my design sketch and stared at her as if she were ridiculous. "You came all the way here just to tell me that? You really have nothing better to do."She threw a hospital report on top of the certificate. "I wasn't planning to make a big deal out of things before, but now I'm pregnant with twins. Everything costs money, so I think it's time we settle accounts."You were with Percy for seven years. He paid for everything you ate and everywhere you lived. And now you're paying it back."So that was what Sabrina was after. Percy probably had run out of money.I kept my cool and called Percy. "Sabrina is raising hell at my workplace. She insists I re

Percy's project completely fell apart. After Sabrina drained his savings, he'd placed all his hopes on this deal. If Julian had been willing to invest in his company, Percy would've made a large sum of money again.Instead, the deal didn't happen, and Percy walked away with debt. Lost and miserable, he spent his days drinking himself numb at a bar.He remembered the first few days after I left. He'd been sitting in this very place, talking big with his buddies, pretty women hanging off both arms.Back then, he'd bragged smugly, "Man, it's great when nobody's on my ass. After Maisie left, I finally learned what real living is."His friends had celebrated his newfound freedom with him. But it didn't take long for regret to set in.Everything had slipped completely out of his control. He never imagined that I'd truly leave him behind and marry Julian. In desperation, he even went to Dad, begging Dad on his knees to persuade me. "Mr. Cullen, please. I can't lose Maisie. Help me talk

I was baffled. Since when did I owe Percy and Sabrina any money?Percy whipped around and glared at Sabrina. "Shut up. This is between the two of us. You don't get to interrupt."Sabrina pointed at me, looking like she was about to cry. "What does this old hag have that I don't? You promised you'd marry me. We were almost done getting the wedding ready, and then you changed your mind at the last second, saying you still couldn't forget Maisie."You treat her so well, and she doesn't appreciate it at all. Why won't you let her go? Why won't you marry me? I'm only 19. I gave you my first time. What am I supposed to do now?"She burst into tears, clutching Percy's hand as she begged him."If you marry me, I won't care how many women you have on the side. I'll give you the freedom Maisie never could. Even then, you still won't pick me?"It was obvious Sabrina didn't really love him. She just wanted a rich man. As long as Percy was willing to give her money, she wouldn't care whether

Percy looked like he'd been struck by lightning, unable to believe what was happening. It took him a long moment to come back to himself."Maisie, is what Mr. Ripley said true? Did you get him to play along just to get back at me?"When Percy still refused to believe it, I pulled my marriage certificate out of my bag and slammed it down in front of him. The official seal burned into his eyes."I've been married for a long time now. It's legal and official. You're just too arrogant, too lost in your own world to notice."Percy grabbed the certificate and read it over and over. The color drained from his face. Even then, he refused to accept it."No... No way... It's fake. We never broke up. How could you marry someone behind my back? You loved me so much."I cut straight through his delusion. "The moment you decided to make me compete with the women for the role of your bride, I stopped loving you completely."Didn't you say Sabrina was young, pretty, and full of energy, and that

I had just turned to leave when Percy grabbed my wrist for the third time. That was it. I was out of patience. I turned back and glared at him. "If you keep harassing me like this, don't blame me for calling security."Percy showed no fear at all. He still thought I was playing hard to get."I sent you abroad because I wanted you to fix that nasty temper of yours. But after all this time, you're still the same. Why can't you learn to be more open-minded, like Sabrina?"I yanked my hand free and rubbed my aching wrist. "Let go. Percy, we're broken up. Stop bothering me."Percy had already lost his patience, though he'd been forcing it down. The second he heard me say that, he finally lost it."When did we ever break up? Unless I say we're done, you're still my girlfriend! You were then, you are now, and you will always be mine!"I didn't bother responding to Percy's outburst.I checked the time. Julian should be here any minute. If he saw me dealing with my ex, he'd definitely g

Percy stood and reached for my hand, but I shook him off.He looked confused by my reaction. After a moment, it seemed to click. He assumed I was still sulking and gave a helpless smile."Alright, stop making a fuss. I came to get you, didn't I? I actually forgave you a long time ago. I just wanted you to fix that nasty temper of yours. I'm doing this for your own good."I frowned. "Who do you think you are to me? Why should I go with you?"I turned and walked away.Percy grabbed my wrist, guilt written all over his face. "I know you're still mad at me. I know this is all my fault. As long as you come back with me, we can just pretend none of this ever happened."My back teeth ground together. He'd put me through hell, and he thought an apology could wipe it all away. He expected me to go back with him and act as if nothing had happened. How could he be this shameless?I shook Percy's hand off again. Just looking at his face made my stomach churn. I glanced at Sabrina standing
