Oscar

“Healer!” I’m screaming it out loud now, having shifted so I can press my hands against Simon’s neck to stop the bleeding. Simon isn’t dead yet, or he would have shifted back. And I can tell that the bite would have been instantly fatal if it were just a couple of inches to the right.

It looks like Simon was able to move just in time.

There still aren’t any healers here on the battlefield, but I hope my call draws over someone more experienced with first aid than me.

I hadn’t realized it would call in the Alpha King himself. He, too, has already shifted back to human form, and his assistant, who had followed the king in wolf form, lays down his pack of supplies at his feet.

“Move,” Cassian orders in his Alpha voice, and I do so even though I’m loath to let go of my friend.

But Cassian takes over as soon as my hand lifts, firmly holding in the bleeding. He hurriedly takes bandages and antiseptic out of the pack and applies them expertly to the wound.

‘Don’t shift,’ he orders Simo

  • Bride of the Sea-King Alpha   Freedom... Sort Of

MaggieI have no idea how long I’ve been here. It’s cold. It’s dark. Though I have been getting used to the light more with the small crack in the door, so at least it’s not pitch darkness. The metal chair is just as cold as the air in here, but at least it’s better than sitting on the floor. In the silence of this room, my stomach growls sound like roars echoing off the walls. My throat, dry and parched, screams for water... even just a single drop. And then I hear it... footsteps, heavy and solid, like a man’s.He’s coming this way.I jump up, the room spinning a little with the sudden movement and my lack of food and water, but I use what strength I have to pull the chair back from the door. I hope it’s Nelson, coming to take me to get something to eat and drink, or to at least bring it to me.The metal door creeks open, and I have to cover my eyes against the blinding light that spills in.“Follow me,” the man commands, and I’m more than happy to obey, even though I can barely see

  • Bride of the Sea-King Alpha   Thirst

MaggieIt’s pitch black in here, without even the sliver of a window like I had back in my room. I blink into the darkness, wishing I was older and had my wolf so I could shift and see something... anything. The musty smell is worse with the door shut. I suppose I should be thankful that opening the door earlier had let in a little fresh air from the hallway, or it would be even harder to breathe.I raise my arms and wrap them around myself, shivering. My bottom aches from where I landed on the concrete floor, but I don’t think it’s anything more than a bruise. So, I decide I need to move, even though it’s so dark in here. My other senses seem to be well-tuned since I can’t see, and I feel a hint warmer air coming from the direction of the door—I think. And once I give it more time, my eyes adjust enough to notice the tiny, almost invisible, sliver of light coming from the top and bottom of the door in the exact position I expected it to be in.I push myself up and walk over, turning

  • Bride of the Sea-King Alpha   Battle for the Village

Oscar‘He’s getting brave, coming into our towns to attack,’ I tell Simon in the mind-link.We’re in wolf form for faster travel now that Assanan is actively attacking one of our settlements. We need to stop him now with every warrior we can spare. We’ll worry about supplies later, which have been dispatched in wagons behind us.‘More like foolish,’ he answers. ‘It’s one thing to hit our infrastructure. But attacking a town that’s ruled by Alpha King Cassian means Assanan has either lost his mind or has a death wish.’I don’t answer because I fear my own thoughts. Something about this doesn’t seem right to me. Assanan has always been calculating in his attacks. If he’s moving in like this, he must have some kind of new weapon that we don’t have. And I don’t even want to know what that is.We hear the fighting before we arrive, and it sounds brutal. We’re second to arrive after a regiment that was stationed nearby, so they’ve been trying to ward off the attack along with those town cit

  • Bride of the Sea-King Alpha   Alone

Maggie“Dismissed!” Marion says with finality. The resulting disbursal of the crowd is almost hypnotizing, with everyone stepping off quickly in different directions—I assume to their assignments—without another word.I hear the unmistakable deep shrill of Camila’s voice calling for Belinda, who barely has time to whisper goodbye to me before hurrying off, dragging the rollable bin of dirty tin dishes with her.And now, I find myself alone.Though I’m glad to be free of Marion’s presence, I’d thought she’d be leading me to the General’s wife for my assignment. But she doesn’t return, and I wait for a few beats before I realize that I’m on my own in this immense house.“I’ll try the parlor,” I whisper to myself, and my small voice echoes in the now-empty room. But I can’t be sure I remember where it was. Upstairs—was it one floor or two from here? All I can do is pray to the Goddess that something looks familiar once I get up there. At least I have food in my belly. I’m feeling energet

  • Bride of the Sea-King Alpha   Old Friends and New

OscarThe warriors and I sit feasting in the mess hall in the Oceana castle, not long after our most recent battle. I’ve been making new friends here. Every one of these warriors is dedicated to protecting our kingdom, and it’s an honor to be one of them.I’m not one to be a picky eater, but the food provided to the warriors here is some of the best I’ve ever had, with Mother’s home-cooked meals being at the top of that list, of course.“I just want to get out there again and kick Assanan’s ass,” a man beside me boasts. “But I’ll keep my distance from our Alpha King. His prowess in battle is terrifying. I fear he’ll turn it on me if I make a wrong move.”“Aye, we’re best fighting on the outer line,” a female warrior agrees, and this sparks a larger discussion among those at my table.Everyone keeps talking about how cold and cruel Alpha King Cassian is, but they don’t seem to understand how well he treats his people and runs the kingdom. If he were truly cruel, we’d be living under th
