Chapter 2

Author: Arden Vale
“Mr. Stock Sr.”

My stepmother dropped to her knees with a thud.

“Yuna has a heart condition. She can barely get out of bed. How could Our Lord possibly choose her…”

Seeing her cry so pitifully, the women around her immediately began speaking up for her.

“So many girls have already been sent into that crypt before. Some died, some came back crippled.”

“Yuna’s been in the ICU before. There’s no way Our Lord would accept her. Sending her in there would be the same as sending her straight to hell.”

“There’s something sinister about Our Lord too. For centuries, people prayed to him like he was some kind of saint, but over the past few years, his resentment has only grown stronger.”

“Our Lord died young while building this family empire. He never married, never had children. It’s no wonder he left this world carrying so much resentment.”

“But isn’t this too much? Failed investments in Stockholm, collapsing buildings, the heads of the family dying one after another…”

Vincent Stock tilted his head slightly and cleared his throat. The women instantly fell silent.

Then he turned back to my stepmother and spoke patiently.

“Sharon, out of the entire Stock bloodline, your daughter is the only eligible woman left to be Our Lord’s bribe.”

My stepmother cried even harder.

Then suddenly, she shot to her feet.

She yanked me over by the arm, grabbed my hair, and forced my head down onto the floor in front of Vincent.

“Mr. Stock Sr., this girl is from Stockholm too. She’s Ryan’s biological daughter!”

“Nonsense!”

Vincent slammed his hand against the table and pointed at me furiously.

“Ryan personally erased her name from the family registry years ago. Sending her in would be an act of deception. If Our Lord is enraged, can you bear the consequences?”

The men on both sides instantly exploded into chaos, all siding with Vincent.

“Exactly! If that happens, it won’t just be Ryan’s daughter who dies. The rest of us could be dragged down with her!”

“The family registry rules were established by Our Lord himself. Who dares break them?”

“It’s only one girl. If sacrificing Yuna can save the entire family, what’s there to hesitate about?”

“Exactly. That girl may be pretty, but nobody dares joke around with the family registry!”

Right then, I let out a soft yelp and pushed myself to my feet.

Still smiling, I rubbed my swollen knees and blinked innocently at Vincent.

“If I switch names with Yuna, wouldn’t that mean I could take her place as Our Lord’s bride?”

The noisy courtyard fell silent for a second.

“You’re willing?” Vincent narrowed his eyes. “To be entered into the family registry, you’ll have to slit your wrist and perform a blood ritual yourself.”

“Well…” I propped my chin on my hand and pretended to hesitate.

“She’s willing!” My stepmother suddenly lunged forward.

As if she’d finally found a lifeline, she burst into tears and pleaded with me. “Nina, for the sake of everything between us as mother and daughter, please save your sister.”

I lowered my lashes and continued acting thoughtful.

The anger in my stepmother’s eyes flared instantly. She clamped down hard on my arm. “Answer him already!”

“Let her go.” Vincent had someone pull my stepmother away before warning coldly, “If the girl herself isn’t willing, then even bloodletting won’t make the ritual work.”

Only then did I shrug casually.

“I’m fine with it, sure. But I do have one small condition.”

“Name it.” It was obvious Vincent was tempted too.

“If…”

I hid my true intentions behind lowered lashes and casually pointed at my lips.

“If you return my pearl, then I’ll agree.”

“Well…”

This time, the others hesitated. “Our Lord ordered it to be sealed away…”

As they exchanged uneasy glances, my stepmother’s scream shattered the deadlock.

“The pearl is hidden inside the compartment beneath Our Lord’s crystal coffin!”

Vincent shot my stepmother an annoyed look.

He set down the rosary beads in his hand aside and slowly rose from his chair.

With his hands behind his back, he paced over to me.

“That’s right.”

As though he had finally made up his mind, Vincent lifted a hand and patted my shoulder.

“You’ll follow the rules and consummate the marriage to conceive a child. If you can walk out alive tomorrow morning… the pearl will be returned to you!”

Every single line of guidance written on those papers the night of the wedding chamber had been something I once said myself. My name was Stocky.Centuries ago, I was the nine-tailed fox raised by the Divine Lord Lucien. After cultivating for years, I became a fox spirit gifted in seduction magic—a harmless little trick that made people fall in love with me.And I loved Lucien so much.Every single day, I tried countless ways to tempt this Divine Lord who had long severed himself from worldly desire. But he never reacted. At most, he would only scold me lightly:“Don’t use your charms on me.”It always left me feeling wronged.Because honestly, I never once used seduction magic on him.I only used it while hunting.I’d make little animals fall in love with me first, then catch and eat them. The day Lucien was summoned back to the heavens, I accidentally consumed a love-inducing herb. What I’d originally meant to say was:“Lucien, if you keep ignoring me, I’m going to burn up from desir

Otherwise, how could he have reached the bottom of the mountain before my car even got there?“Stocky, if you don’t like hotels, then we’ll do it out here in the mountains.”He set me down in an open clearing and immediately reached for my clothes.Right then, a shrill cry suddenly pierced the sky overhead. The earth began to tremble violently, branches snapping apart with terrifying cracks.A streak of golden light flashed past and I saw Lucien. He was still dressed in that immortal-looking white robe, the faint mark I’d left at the side of his neck unmistakably visible. He looked dangerously close to losing control. With a furious sweep of his hand, black mist exploded out of Nathan’s body like a collapsed dam unleashing a flood. My heart tightened instantly. So, Nathan was the true owner of the black mist all along!“Lucien, have you lost your mind?” Nathan shouted, his voice shaking with fury and unmistakable fear. “You actually dared to leave the crypt in your true form?”“Malric

“Girls throwing themselves at him could probably fill an entire city. Who would’ve thought he’d end up chasing someone fat and plain like me instead? Maybe he just likes that our family’s loaded.”“How far have you two gotten?”“We’ve only held hands…” Yuna mumbled sleepily. “My heart condition’s too weak. I can’t even handle kissing…”“What if I tried stealing him from you?”“Then you can have him.” Yuna sounded completely unconcerned. “Though I think he already has someone he can’t forget. As long as you don’t mind. Well… assuming Our Lord doesn’t mind either.”“If he proposed to you, would you marry him?”“He’d never propose to me…”When I tried asking more questions, all I got in response was soft snoring.I forced my eyes open with my fingers, desperately trying not to fall asleep. But exhaustion won in the end.And once again, I dreamed about Lucien. This time, he wore a robe woven from silver fox tails, gazing at me with quiet resentment in his eyes.“Have you gotten tired of

I stared at Lucien lying there motionless. And for the first time, real fear crept into my heart. The abbey kept countless records about the Demon Lord.Every one of them described him as ruthless, wreathed in black mist, cruel beyond reason.I couldn’t stop my imagination from running wild.Back then, my perfectly golden pearl turned black the moment my father prayed before Lucien’s statue in the chapel. His resentment was so powerful it caused fires in the storehouses, collapsing beams, sudden deaths among the family heads, brides ending up dead or crippled, and he’d nearly strangled my stepmother to death in public. The golden pearl vanished from the crypt without anyone unlocking the case. Who else besides him could’ve done that? And not only that—the pearl somehow ended up inside the stomach of the sister who stole my identity…Each event was stranger than the last. Not only did it fit the vicious reputation of the Demon Lord, it all seemed suspiciously directed at me.So, was Luc

He was still lying there.I ran to the table and downed half a bottle of wine in one go.“You don’t have to drink like someone’s about to steal it from you.”A bottle of imported sparkling water was suddenly handed to me.I turned around.Lucien was standing right behind me, smiling.“My Liege~”I threw myself into his arms with exaggerated grievance.“You scared me to death. I thought I’d never see you again.”I rubbed my head against his chin.“How could that happen?” His lips brushed softly against my forehead while his thumb traced lightly across my mouth. “You still haven’t completed the task the patriarch gave you.”“What task?”Pretending not to notice the teasing glint in his eyes, I let my fingers slowly slip beneath the folds of his robe.He caught my hand at once and lifted it to his lips, pressing a gentle kiss against my fingertips.“Behave,” he warned softly. He was not scary at all. With a small tug of my fingers, his flowing white robe slid right off one shoulder.“You

He introduced himself as Nathan Vale, Yuna’s college classmate. They had already been dating for two years.Nathan sat beside the hospital bed while the two of them laughed and chatted. Then he peeled an apple for her.Yuna ate while smiling happily.Meanwhile, I sat on the sofa by the door, staring at the two of them without blinking.Suddenly, Yuna gagged.I clearly saw the pearl inside her stomach shift for the first time since I’d found it there.“What’s wrong?” Nathan immediately patted her back in concern.“I don’t know. Maybe the apple’s too hard. I suddenly feel like throwing up.” Yuna gagged again.I watched as the pearl rolled upward inside her, looking dangerously close to coming back up.My nerves were stretched so tight I nearly crushed the sofa arm beneath my fingers.“Then, do you still want to eat it?” Nathan asked hesitantly.“Yes. My boyfriend peeled this apple for me himself. Even if it’s hard, I’m eating it.” Yuna pouted playfully.“Then I’ll cut it into smaller p
