I take him to my office rather than the bare room I use for Roan, because some instinct I don't examine too closely refuses to let those two rooms mean the same thing. It's smaller. Warmer. A fire already dying down in the grate from earlier in the evening, before any of tonight happened.

He takes it in slowly, the way he takes in everything — unhurried, assessing, like he's cataloging exits and weaknesses and the exact number of steps to my desk without ever appearing to look for any of it.

"Sit," I say, "or don't. I don't particularly care which."

"Generous." He sits anyway, folding himself into the chair across from my desk with an ease that makes the furniture look like it was built for him instead of for me. "You hit hard, for someone your size."

"You'll want to remember that."

"Believe me." Something flickers behind the gold of his eyes, there and gone too fast to name. "I already have."

I sit across from him and make myself breathe evenly, because there's something about being this close to him that keeps snagging my attention in ways I don't have patience for tonight, a low, steady thrum of him, almost like a second heartbeat sitting just under my skin, faint enough that I could convince myself I'm imagining it if it weren't so persistent.

"You said you had something I wanted," I say. "Say it, or leave."

"You want to know what's killing your wolves." He leans forward, elbows on his knees, all trace of humor gone from his face now. "I do know. That part was true."

"And the rest of it?"

"The rest isn't information I'm giving away for free tonight." A faint, humorless smile. "Call it leverage. Or call it patience. I haven't decided which I prefer yet either."

"You're infuriating."

"I've been called worse. Usually by people who meant it as a compliment."

Despite myself, despite the hour and the exhaustion and the fury still simmering under my skin from the fist I put into his jaw twenty minutes ago, something in me almost wants to laugh. I don't let it show.

"Tell me what you know," I say instead. "About what's taking my wolves."

"An older hunger than either of our kinds like to admit still exists." His voice drops, quieter now, "Something that doesn't feed on flesh. It feeds on what's underneath it. Power, mostly. The kind your bloodline carries more of than it should."

My chest goes cold. "You know what I am."

"I knew what you were the moment I scented you in that clearing." He holds my gaze, steady and unblinking. "You're not the first Unbound it's hunted. You won't be the last, unless someone stops it first."

"And you intend to be that someone."

"I intend," he says, "to be standing next to whoever does it."

Before I can decide what to do with that, a knock lands hard against my office door, urgent enough that I'm on my feet before I've told myself to move.

"Alpha." One of the younger guards, breathless again, twice in one night now. "There's more wolves at the gate. Two of them. They're asking for you by name."

Every muscle in my body goes tight. "Who."

"They wouldn't say much. Just that one of them needs to see you. Says his name is Roan."

The sound of it lands somewhere low in my chest, an old, humiliating flicker of hope I have no business still feeling, and I hate — genuinely, thoroughly hate — how little control I still have over my own reaction to four letters spoken by a stranger at my gate.

"Of course he is," I mutter, mostly to myself.

The Lycan watches this happen across my own desk with open, unbothered interest, like I've just handed him a piece of information worth considerably more than anything he gave me tonight.

"Trouble?" he asks, entirely too pleased with himself.

"Stay here," I say, sharper than necessary. "Don't touch anything. Don't leave this room."

"Wouldn't dream of it, Alpha." That same infuriating almost-smile. "Go deal with your other complication. I'll be here when you're done."

I don't answer him. I'm already moving, already bracing myself against whatever's waiting at my gate this time, already furious at my own pulse for picking up speed before I've even laid eyes on him.

  • Bring Him to His Knees   Agreement

SLOANE I don't sleep so much as lose consciousness for two hours and call it rest. By the time I drag myself into the war room, the sun's barely up and Corvin's already waiting, arms crossed, wearing the specific expression he reserves for mornings after nights he wasn't fully briefed on. "I want to understand," he says, without preamble, "how my Alpha ended up housing a rival Alpha, an unidentified Lycan, and a near-riot at our own gate, all in the same six hours, without a single member of this council being consulted." "There wasn't time to consult anyone. There was a horn blast and then there wasn't." "There was time enough to invite two dangerous strangers under our roof." "One of them isn't a stranger. He's the reason we're even discussing an alliance in the first place." I pour myself something hot and bitter from the pot someone left on the sideboard, mostly for the excuse of having something to do with my hands. "The other one may be the only reason we find out wh

SLOANE By the time I get back to my office, the fire's gone out completely and the Lycan has made himself entirely too comfortable in my chair, boots crossed at the ankle, watching the door like he knew exactly how long it would take me to deal with Roan and come back. "That was entertaining," he says. "That was not a performance for your benefit." "No," he agrees, "but it was still entertaining. You have a talent for making grown men behave like scolded children. I mean that as a compliment, in case the delivery didn't make it obvious." "It didn't." I move past him to rebuild the fire myself rather than call for someone at this hour, and I can feel him watching the whole process with an attention that has nothing to do with the fire at all. "You could have made that easier. Instead you provoked him." "He provoked himself. I simply declined to make it comfortable for him." A pause, and when he speaks again there's a thread of genuine humor woven through it. "Also, I'll admit, I

  • Bring Him to His Knees   Stand down..

ROAN Marcus tells me to stay down. I don't listen. It isn't defiance, exactly, or not only that. It's the same reckless pull that got me here in the first place, the same refusal to sit still while something that feels like it concerns her is happening thirty feet away from me. My legs don't fully agree with the decision. I make them cooperate anyway. "Roan." Marcus catches my arm before I clear the doorway, voice low and urgent. "She told me to keep you still." "She's not here to enforce it." "You can barely stand." "I've been managing that all night. I'll manage it a little longer." He curses under his breath but doesn't try to physically stop me, which tells me more about how worried he actually is than any argument would have. We make it as far as the edge of the courtyard, and that's where I see him. The wolf pacing near the far wall is easily twice the size of anything I've ever stood across from, fur the color of wet stone, eyes an unnatural, burning gold that fix on me

SLOANE I hear him before I see him. Not his voice, his breathing. Ragged and uneven, the particular sound of a body pushed somewhere it has no business going, and my stomach drops before I've even cleared the last corner to the gate. Marcus is holding him up. Roan's on his feet, technically, but only in the sense that gravity hasn't fully won yet. He's soaked through with sweat despite the cold, chest heaving, one arm slung over Marcus's shoulders in a way that tells me exactly how long he's been running like this and exactly how much it's cost him to do it. My guards have formed a loose, uncertain half-circle around them, weapons lowered but not put away, unsure whether tonight requires a second round of violence or just a very confused explanation. "Stand down," I say, and they do, though I can feel their eyes on me the whole time, cataloging my reaction the way everyone in this compound has learned to. Roan looks up when he hears my voice, and something in his face breaks ope

  • Bring Him to His Knees   Guest at the gate

SLOANE The horn wakes me before the knock does. I'm out of bed and pulling clothes on before my mind has fully caught up to my body, the old training taking over the way it always does, three short blasts, then a pause, then three more. Breach. Not a drill. Del's already at my door by the time I get it open, fully dressed, eyes sharp despite the hour. "Eastern fence," she says, already moving with me down the hall. "Something came through fast. Watch didn't get a clean look before the horn went up." "Numbers?" "Unclear. Could be one. Could be twenty." The compound is already alive by the time we hit the courtyard, wolves shifting mid-stride, clothes abandoned in heaps behind them, fur rippling into place in the dark. Somewhere behind the main hall I hear the low, urgent voices of women herding children toward the cellar stores, quick and calm in the way you only get from years of drilling for exactly this. A pack that knows how to be afraid without falling apart. I built that.
