Clara’s POV

I hid my anger behind my smirk as I stared at him from across the room while he spoke. I had given this man my entire life, but even as he sat across the table, I felt absolutely nothing for him.

Funny how I was so nervous about seeing him again when I returned to New York. I worried endlessly about how I would feel—whether my heart would still skip a beat at the sight of him, or if I would feel nothing at all.

I was numb to the love, to the pain, and to every other emotion I once carried for him. I was married to him for five years. What did I get in return? Just one thousand dollars, even with my condition at the time.

That was the height of wickedness, and coming back here, all I wanted was to give him the same measure. I was going to turn his loyal subjects against him, then move on to take the company he loved so much. I would make him pay for every tear I shed and every pain I endured.

“Your point was very valid, Miss Hayes,” his voice snapped me out of my daze.

Damon’s POV “What the hell are you trying to prove?” I pushed my chair backward, the loud scraping sound tore through the almost quiet room. My heart thumped loudly with each heavy breath I took. She turned slightly, just enough for me to catch the side of her face. “What am I trying to prove, you ask?” She scoffed, then turned fully toward me. “I'm not trying to prove anything, Mister Adams. I am just simply securing my investment.” “Bullshit! You walk into this meeting late like you own the place and try to one-up me?” “Try?” She chuckled, and it made me more angry. “I didn't try, Mister Adams, I did. They tossed you aside like filth without even thinking about it twice. Does that ring a bell?” I scrunched in confusion. So that's what all of this was for? “So you're here to take revenge?” I asked. She shrugged. “Revenge, my pound of flesh, karma, whatever they go by, I am here to stay.” “Where have you been all these years?” The question burst through my mouth before I could e

Damon’s POV I turned toward her and my heart skipped a beat. The entire room melted into silence, time itself stopping for her graceful entrance. I couldn’t believe it, was this real? “Clara,” her name slipped from my lips in a whisper, so soft like it would shatter if I said it any louder and as if she heard it, her eyes drifted to me. Our gaze lingered for a while. I expected to see the fear in her eyes, or for her to look away, but she remained still, holding on like her life depended on it. I slowly became uncomfortable as I tried to hold on, my body froze on the chair, then a smirk broke her tense lips and the sounds in the room erupted. She crossed the path, each step felt deliberately slow and precise like she wanted the entire room to notice her. She weaved through the chairs toward the only empty seat. There was something about her, something felt different, the aura radiating from her pores felt stronger. She sighed and ran a hand through her perfectly neat hai

Damon’s POV The taste of the almost cold coffee swished in my mouth as the door opened and I walked into the room that was humming like a hive. The door groaned and the entire room swept in my direction, silence immediately holding the hall hostage as their eyes locked on mine. I walked toward the head of the table that was stabbed with the rays from the various reporters and punctuated with the microphones from them as well.My heart thumped with sadness with every step I took. It felt like a dream that I desperately wanted to wake up from, a nightmare that continued to plague my senses. I inhaled deeply as I mounted the stairs and rounded the table that was filled with other important people. I scanned the row and the empty seat stuck out like a sore thumb. she still wasn’t here. My nerves ticked in annoyance; did she think this was a joke?I scoffed as I lowered myself onto the chair.“This is a private meeting; we have only allowed each and everyone of you here to witness this fo

Damon’s POVI took another careful glance at the mirror, barely recognizing the man that stared back at me.The suit was expensive and tailored to perfection, yet it did nothing to ease the tightness in my chest. I adjusted my tie slowly, watching my fingers move down my chest. Confident and calm. That was the image I wanted everyone to see today—hiding the nervousness and fear that was breeding beneath. A soft knock interrupted the silence in the room, then her voice followed.“Come in.” The door opened, and Elaine, my secretary, stepped inside with a file pressed against her chest. She was looking neat and polished as always—one of the reasons I had kept her for the past six.“Good morning, sir,” she greeted with her usual faint naive smile. “The hall is ready. Most of the board members have arrived.”I didn’t respond immediately, as my focus was on knotting my tie properly. A soft exhale escaped my lips when I got it right, then I shifted my gaze to her. “Miss Hayes… has she arr

Clara’s POV Mr Salvador turned to face me fully. “Mr Damon stepped out to—” He paused as Maurice mistakenly dropped his spoon to the floor, which produced a clattering sound. Salvador and I turned to him as he clutched onto his food flask. “Sorry,” he whispered softly and lowered his face to the floor. “Mr Damon isn’t around at the moment. You will meet him at the board meeting tomorrow.” I forced a smile, knowing too well that he was holding back what he had intended to say earlier. My lips parted to press further, but he interrupted me before I could speak.“I’ll go get the luggage now,” he added and headed for the door. When the door closed behind him, a soft exhale escaped my lips. What was he trying to tell me?Well, I was able to take a shower and change into something more comfortable when the doorbell rang. The door opened, and Salvador walked in with some other guy. I hadn’t seen him before, but I could tell he was likely the hotel staff. They had both mine and Mauric
