Chapter 1

I took the deed to my mother, my voice trembling. "Can you explain why Erik is the sole heir to this house?"

A hush fell over the living room.

My brother was the first to break the silence.

"Why wouldn't my name be on it? It's my house. I bought it," he snarled.

I turned sharply to my mother. "Then where did all the money I've been wiring you over the years go?"

My mother's face darkened. "Maybe you should explain why you were rummaging through Erik's things. This house is meant for him after he gets married! Why can't he be the sole owner?

"You willingly offered to help pay for his house! Are you seriously asking him to give you the money back now?"

Beth Hart, Erik's future wife, sneered, "You're about to get married, Vicky. Why are you still pining after a house we own? Go live with your husband or something. I'm sure you have more claim to his house than ours."

My mother suddenly burst into tears. "I'm sorry, but I just... I'm so upset, okay? I worked all my life to provide for you. I paid for your education. I helped you get your job.

"Instead of showing some gratitude to the family that supported you, you're demanding money from your struggling brother!

"This is all some calculated scheme to siphon off every last bit of wealth we have before you happily marry into another family, isn't it?"

I clenched my fists. I'd paid for my brother's shiny new car. I'd paid for the renovations to the house. I'd even contributed a substantial amount to his wedding.

Yet when it came time for my wedding, my mother had been all too eager to argue, "Look, his family is doing really well, right? Why can't he contribute more? It's all about financial capacity, and let me remind you, we don't have that kind of money."

The injustice of it all was becoming unbearable. I'd kept so much bottled up inside, and I saw less and less reason to stay silent.

Hence, I didn't.

"So this was always supposed to be his home after he got married?! Despite all the money I've been paying for years?! Do the math yourself! I paid 2000 bucks every month for over eight years!

"And you people said this house was a family effort. You said it was supposed to be my home too!"

My mother wiped away her tears and leaped to her feet.

"But why should it be? You won't even keep your maiden name after you get married! I don't see why your husband's family can't provide you with a house or share their wealth with you!" she snapped, pointing an accusing finger at me.

"Erik is your younger brother, for God's sake. Back in the day, the eldest child was expected to do far more to protect and provide for their younger siblings than you've ever done.

"They hardly complained as much as you do! Modern women like you fancy yourselves rebels, don't you? But for what?!"

Erik snickered.

"I didn't know you could be this miserly, Vicky. If I were you, I'd have treated all the money I'd been wiring my parents as repayment for raising me," he said. "Besides, I've got my own wedding coming up, and I can't do that without money. So how about you hand over that 50,000 dollars already? We're wasting daylight here."

Even Beth felt compelled to chime in with another brain-dead remark.

She rolled her eyes. "Look, I'm trying to be fair here, but they're right, Vic. I've never seen a sister as miserly as you.

"You're about to marry into someone else's family, yet you can't even find it in your heart to let Erik and I have a roof over our heads. You just have to stake a claim on it, don't you?"

I'd never seen more disgusting faces in my life.

Blood rushed to my head as my heart sank beneath the weight of bitter disappointment.

I drew a deep breath. "Good luck getting that 50,000 dollars you need, folks. In fact, good luck paying off your mortgage. It's your house, so it's your problem."

My mother went livid.

She lunged at me and grabbed me by the collar. "You ungrateful brat! You will not stop giving us money, I swear it!

"If you so much as threaten to do that... none of us will show up at your wedding tomorrow! I can't wait to see the look on your in-laws' faces when they realize even your own flesh and blood has disowned you!"

I slapped her hand away and stared at the absurd rage twisting her face.

Strangely enough, I felt unfazed. "Sure. I guess there'll be more food for the rest of us, then."

  • Buck Around, Whine Out   Chapter 10

After a three-hour drive, Nick and I arrived at St. Bathory General Hospital. We made our way through the lobby and down several hallways before I pushed open the door to the shared hospital room.I braced myself against the overpowering smell of antiseptic and the faint, musty odor beneath it. There, in the corner, lay the woman I used to call Mom.I would not have recognized her if the nurse hadn't told me which bed was hers. She looked so haggard and frail that her skin seemed to cling to her bones, wrinkled and deeply creased like tree bark. Her eyes were dark and sunken. Her once snow-white hair had faded to a dull, ashen gray.At the sound of my footsteps, she slowly turned her eyes toward me. They immediately reddened. Cloudy tears streamed endlessly down the deep creases of her face. She tried to reach for the hem of my shirt, but her hand trembled too badly. Her voice came out raspy and hoarse, thick with tears and regret. "Vicky… You're finally here… You finally came to

He only stared at her with bitter rage.He was sentenced to three years in prison.Vikcy was at an exotic island with her husband when the news reached her.She took a sip of champagne as she watched the report on her phone. A breeze stirred her hair,

Lloyd was blunt and uncompromising, and his voice carried across the entire lobby. "In the eyes of the law, this constitutes fraud. The money was never intended as a voluntary gift, which means you defrauded Ms. Hunter."My client is now demanding the return of every dollar she has paid you over the years, plus interest. The total comes to 300,000 dollars."Erik's face went white as a sheet. He stumbled backward, and the loudspeaker slipped from his hand and hit the floor with a loud clank."Y-You're suing me?! Are you fucking insane, bitch?! You're suing your own brother!" he bellowed.I fixed him with a hard stare. "That's news to me. I didn't know you actually remembered you were my brother."You certainly didn't remember that I was supposed to be your sister when you claimed the house I'd worked so hard to pay for as your own. You didn't even blink when you kicked me out of my own house!"I pointed at the court papers. "I'm not going to settle for a cent less, and you can cou

Erik held a large sign scrawled in barely legible, blood-red paint: [Give me back my hard-earned money, Vicky Hunter!]Beside him, a loudspeaker blared a prerecorded message on repeat. "Vicky Hunter, get your head out of the sand and face the consequences you deserve! Get down here and pay back what you stole from me!"If you don't, I'll come to your company every day and drag your name through the mud! Good luck finding another job in this industry after that, you hag!"The lobby was packed with onlookers, employees and clients alike. They pointed and whispered among themselves as the recording continued to blare. As soon as I stepped out of the elevator, my mother sprang to her feet and lunged at me. The security guards I'd brought intercepted her before she could reach me."Finally decided to show up, huh, you ingrate?!" she shrieked from behind the guards, gnashing her teeth."You're transferring three hundred grand to me right now! Right now! I want you to pay off your broth

For the first time in my life, I could finally walk into a high-end shopping district and buy a top-quality power dress.I could finally sign up for a complete spa and beauty treatment package and see a glowing, confident young woman whenever I looked in the mirror. My salary skyrocketed, and I was given a private office on the executive floor. My life was shooting upward like a rocket, and it was

I looked up from the document in my hand and stared at Nick with wide eyes. "W-What's going on?"Nick climbed into the passenger seat and met my gaze with an expression full of love and regret. He said softly, "I lied to you too, Vicky. My parents didn't make their money from a small business. They've actually been running a successful building materials manufacturing company all this time."I lied about my family background because I was worried the difference in our social status would make you feel unequal in our relationship. I didn't want you to feel pressured because of it..."Beside me, his father, Marcus Kitt, handed me a tissue."Nick told us all about your family situation, sweetie," he explained kindly. "We looked into your background before this. We know how much you've suffered for the sake of that family. It didn't make us look down on you. It only made us feel terrible for what you've endured."Elena pulled me into a warm embrace and stroked my hair like a mother c
