Chapter 3

Author: Roasted Piggy
Once again, I watched helplessly as Ethan was thrown out. My heart throbbed in so much pain that it was suffocating.

Still, he didn't give up. When Audrey refused to budge, he went to Eleanor for help instead. "You're the only one who can help us now, Mrs. Hades. I'm begging you… Please talk to Audrey."

She stroked his hair in distress. "You don't have to beg me, child. Of course, I'll help.

"Lucas paid for my treatments, and you take care of me all the time. If it weren't for you two… I'd have long been dead.

"Speaking of Lucas, where is he? I haven't seen him in so long."

Tears had long been streaming down my face. Right now, Eleanor was the only person still standing on our side, but she had no idea that I'd left the world.

Ethan choked back a sob. He was just about to explain when Sebastian stepped in and shot him a look of pure disdain. "What's going on now? Since Audrey wouldn't relent, have you come to Mrs. Hades instead?

"Don't pay him any mind, Mrs. Hades. He is a liar. He showed up at the office today to harass Audrey."

Eleanor acted as if she hadn't heard a word. Ignoring Sebastian, she gestured for Ethan to take a seat and drink coffee.

Sebastian's face flushed between alternating shades of anger and shame.

Just then, Audrey walked in. When she noticed Ethan on the couch, she immediately summoned the butler to throw him out.

"Why are you always following us around? Have you no shame?" she spat.

At that, Eleanor abruptly jumped to her feet and snapped at Audrey, "How could you talk that way? Lucas took such good care of us both back then and helped us immensely. How could you treat his little brother this way? Learn to be grateful, Audrey!"

All Audrey did was frown and say, "It's over between us now, Mom. I have a fiance, so stop bringing up the past. People change, and he was no exception."

Seeing Audrey's stubbornness, Eleanor was about to open her mouth to argue when Ethan gently took her hand. He stopped her, then turned back to Audrey.

"Believe it or not, Lucas had his reasons."

Audrey didn't respond and just let out a cold laugh. After that, Sebastian grabbed him and shoved him out the door.

I wanted to leave with him, but for some reason, I couldn't drift away. All I could do was hover around Audrey and follow her wherever she went.

Late that night, she drove out alone. I sat in the passenger seat, watching as she entered "The Tonic Bar" into her GPS.

I couldn't help but frown.

After we arrived, she sat in a booth alone, drowning her sorrows with drinks after drinks. I tried to snatch the glass from her hand countless times, but my fingers always slipped through.

Suddenly, she turned around and raised her phone to take a photo.

When I followed her gaze, I noticed my so-called fiancee—Clara Sterling—drinking with a group of friends. Her arms were draped around two male models.

As they were about to kiss, Audrey strode over and pulled Clara aside. Then, she asked mockingly, "Does Lucas know you're cheating on him?"

Clara impatiently shook her off. "What would a dead man know?"

Audrey stumbled back and collapsed onto the couch in shock. "What did you just say? A dead man?"

While Clara took a slow drag from her cigarette and slowly exhaled, Audrey frantically cried out, "Talk!"

I'd heard that in a state of delirium, you might see the important people you could never see again. It was true. I saw Lucas, looking just as handsome as before and wearing the college jacket I once gave him. I supposed that in death, one would return to the best version of oneself. But he never smiled or talked to me. All he did was look at me.I reached out and tried to grab him, only to find my fingers passing right through him.I wanted to ask if he still hated me, but I was too afraid to voice the question. It was my message, asking to see her one last time. The phone slipped to the ground again, but this time, Audrey scrambled to pick it up and carefully dusted it off, for fear that even the dust might stain it.Clara could only shake her head. Before leaving, Audrey told her, "No matter what happened, thank you for telling me the truth. Audrey suddenly seemed to remember something and grabbed her phone to call the project supervisor. "Mr. Cole, stop the demolition now!"A deafening rumble of machinery came from the other end of the line as the project supervisor told her that the work was ongoing.Audrey shot to her feet and flagged down a cab. She was heading straight to the demolition site. But the more urgent the situation was, the more the world seemed to work against her. A traffic jam brought her to a halt just half a mile away from the site. With such heavy traffic, it would take at least 30 minutes before the cars would continue moving.Audrey couldn't wait. She pushed the door open and kicked off her heels. She ran toward my home, or to be exact, our previous home.As someone who prized her dignity above all, she was now oblivious to all the stares. Passerby whispered that she'd lost her mind. Even with her desperate sprint, she didn't make it in time. By the time she arrived, the apartment building w

The sharp pain in my stomach was a brutal reminder that I was a dying man. I couldn't drag Audrey down with me, and I had to secure her future while I was still alive.I pulled my hand back and turned around to dump all the food she had made straight into the trash. She stayed on the floor, looking up at me. "I spent three hours making that," she said. I forced a smile. "So what? Does it compare to what a professional chef can make?"You talked about building a life with me, but I don't want that life anymore. Do you understand?"She shook her head, nearly too choked up to speak. "I don't understand… Why are you doing this to me?"While we were stuck in a stalemate, the doorbell rang.It was Clara, who looped her arm through mine the moment she saw me. "Surprise!"I smiled and pulled her in for a hug right in front of Audrey."You couldn't wait, could you, Lucas?" Audrey rasped. Before I could say a word, Clara raised a brow. As Clara watched Audrey, she scoffed. "What? Don't you know?"He's dead as a doornail by now, but you were too busy cuddling with your fiance to notice. Speaking of which, Lucas loved you so much that he didn't want you to be sad even when he was dying."Audrey repeatedly shook her head in disbelief before turning around and fleeing the bar in a daze. When I followed her out into the cool night air, I saw that she had collapsed onto a bench by the side of the road. She was silent, staring blankly at the relentless flow of traffic. It was then that I realized that this was the street we used to frequent back then.Back then, fresh out of college, Audrey was hell-bent on starting her own company. I offered to invest, but she refused, saying she didn't want to use my money.
