Chapter 1

"Sign the paper. The system will wipe your identity from the West Coast in three minutes."

The monitor glared back at me. One tap of my finger, and the screen flashed red with a single word: REVOKED.

A syringe lay on the corner of my metal desk, filled with concentrated suppressants. Just enough to force my inner wolf into a coma and fake my death.

Nora, my second-in-command, slammed her hand over the transfer papers. Her eyes were bloodshot.

"Dr. Winslet, he is erasing you! You spent three years curing his rabid soldiers. Now he throws you out to Florida like garbage?"

"Take your hand off the papers, Nora." My voice did not shake.

I closed the thick medical logs from the last three years. Every page was full of my blood, literally. I made serums to purge his wolfsbane poison. Every full moon, he held me close to soothe my damaged beast. But the moment his own beast tried to take over, he shoved me away. He never laid a finger on me.

For three years, he never gave me his mark.

"Your wolf is too weak," he told me back then. "I want to wait for peace. I want to give you a real ceremony."

I fell for his lies. I thought he was protecting me.

Two hours ago, he marched that woman through the front doors for the whole pack to see.

He never had a problem marking someone. He just never wanted to mark me.

The doors burst open.

Chloe walked right in. Two armed guards followed close behind.

She ignored Nora completely. Her eyes scanned my lab, stopping dead center on the display shelf.

A pair of mating cuffs sat in the center of the shelf.

Roderick clamped them onto my wrists our first winter together. He said the metal was soaked in his scent. He said it would keep my wolf steady. I wore them every day until the metal wore down. I only took them off this morning to buff out the scratches.

"So this is where you hid them." Chloe smirked. She picked up the cuffs with two fingers, her face twisted in disgust. "Roderick drew the sketch for these when I turned eighteen. They were supposed to be my birthday gift. You wore them for three years. Doesn't that make you sick?"

"The Alpha gave those to the doctor personally!" Nora snapped.

"It is a cheap copy." Chloe tossed the cuffs to her guard. "Torch them. They make me sick."

The guard fired up a blowtorch. Blue fire hissed.

"Stop!" Nora lunged forward.

The guard raised the heavy metal handle to bash her skull in.

A massive hand caught Nora's wrist in mid-air. He shoved her away with zero mercy.

Nora crashed into a metal cart. Glass trays shattered across the floor.

Alpha command rolled through the room like a physical wave. My damaged wolf whimpered in my chest.

For three years, he never used his Alpha aura around me. I thought it was love. I was wrong. It was just pity.

I let out a quiet breath and turned to face the man I lived with for three years.

Roderick stood in the doorway. He looked at the mess on the floor and frowned.

Chloe instantly put on tears. She threw herself into his chest, holding up her red palm. "Roderick, the sparks burned me. It hurts so bad."

"Where are you hurt? Let me see."

Roderick pulled out a tin of salve and rubbed it gently onto Chloe's skin.

That was my medicine. I spent nights boiling the herbs by hand when he came back bloody from battle. It was the only tin left on the entire coast. Now he was wasting it on a scratch that was not even there.

My blood ran cold.

Roderick finally looked up at me. His Alpha aura pressed hard against my chest. "Winslet, are you done acting out?"

"I am not acting out." I met his gaze dead-on.

"Then control your dog." He put the tin away. "Chloe suffered six years in hell. She has every right to take back what is hers. I protected your family's business. I gave you this lab. I gave you a safe haven in Florida for life."

He took a step closer, towering over me.

"You asked to visit your pack one last time. I gave you that too. I did my duty by you. Now, grow up and play your part."

Every word tore away the last shred of my pride.

I took half a step back, putting distance between us.

"You are right, Alpha," I said quietly, dropping my gaze. "I will do as I am told."

The fire had already swallowed the cuffs. The metal warped, blackened, and melted into slag.

Chloe rested her head against Roderick's shoulder, smiling like a winner.

The last trace of my pine scent in the room was gone, replaced by the stench of scorched metal.

Roderick checked his watch. His voice stayed completely flat. "Lucas will pick you up at eight tonight."

He locked his cold gray eyes onto mine.

"Let's end this cleanly, Winslet. You got everything you asked for. The entire territory is watching this ceremony tomorrow. I do not want any surprises."

My burial came soon after.Nora carried out my final wishes. Roderick did not bring an escort of luxury cars. Only a single black SUV carried the heavy alloy pod up to the cold fir peak in the Rocky Mountains. It was far from the city. The air smelled crisp and clean, filled with the scent of the fir trees I loved.Freezing sleet blew across the loose gravel on the ridge. The grave was cut into the jagged rock near the cliff edge. A black marble headstone stood beside it. There was no family crest. No Alpha seal. Only a single name carved deep into the stone: Winslet.Pulleys groaned as the heavy pod went down into the frozen earth."Wait! Let me through!"My mother broke through the guard line and fell face-first into the mud."My Winslet was always scared of being alone. Let me talk to her..."Nora took a wide step and blocked the pit."Too little, too late," Nora said, staring down at the woman in the dirt. "Four years ago, the doctor knelt outside your estate in the pouring rain. D

"The guests have been waiting all night for you, Roderick."The flap of the tent was pulled back. Chloe walked in.She had changed out of her formal gown into a clean black coat. She glanced at my lifeless body on the metal table, then turned her eyes to Roderick. "She was weak. She couldn't handle the shock of breaking the bond. Pack leaders from across the continent are waiting at the cathedral. What are you even doing here?"Roderick stood by the table. He did not turn to look at her."Weak?" His voice was low, laced with deadly cold. "She drank pure wolfsbane."Chloe froze, then knit her brow. "That was her own choice. You gave her an out. You gave her enough money for a lifetime. Wasn't that enough? You put on quite a show these past three years just to keep me alive...""It was not a show." Roderick turned around fast and cut her off.The smug look on Chloe's face melted away.Roderick looked at her with hollow, empty eyes. "I lied to myself. I convinced myself I still loved you.

"Lock down the city! Bring every neuro specialist and life-support rig on the West Coast right now!"Within thirty minutes, searchlights blinded the makeshift medical tent.Power surged through the metal exam table. The defibrillator slammed down hard, once, then again. Six full vials of wolf-awakening serum were emptied. The glowing green liquid vanished into my veins without a spark. Nothing. All night long, the shock pads burned against my chest. Skin turned pale and raw.Dawn cracked across the sky in cold shades of gray. The monitor line stayed flat and dead. The chief specialist's knees gave out. He dropped hard onto the freezing floor, his voice shaking. "Her wolf is gone. There's nothing left to save..."The other doctors dropped their heads in unison. No one dared to look at the man by the table.Roderick did not draw his gun. He did not rage. He stood by the metal table, picked up a warm white cloth, and gently wiped the dried, black poison from the corner of my lips. His eye

Lucas's armored car was cut off halfway down the road.Seconds later, Roderick kicked his door open. The downpour soaked his formal uniform in an instant. The noise of the banquet was thirty miles behind him. Only one sentence echoed in his head: *She's dead*. He tracked down Lucas, and before his mind could catch up, he was already tearing down the highway."Give her to me," Roderick said, marching forward. A dull ache from the broken bond burned deep in his chest. It twisted his gut into knots.Lucas stepped out of the vehicle and blocked the door. His eyes were wild and stubborn. "Don't you touch her!""Know your place, Lucas," Roderick growled, keeping his voice low. Every word dripped with the heavy command of an Alpha. "Give me my mate.""Your mate?"Lucas let out a harsh laugh."You refused to mark her for three whole years. You don't get to call her your mate. She was with me for four years. I wasn't the best husband, but I treated her with care. Then you came with threats of b

The shrill alarm was still ringing through the soundproof glass. Lucas ignored it. He stepped forward, blocked the window, and kept his voice calm and respectful."Alpha, it's just the bond breaking. Her body is fighting the shock. Breaking a soul tie always rips through the wolf's nerves. The harder the shock, the cleaner the break. The life-support will take over. She'll wake up in four hours once we hit the safe zone."My father forced a quick, nervous smile. "Yes, Alpha. Everything followed the medical protocol. The guests are waiting upstairs. The news of Winslet's death is already out. If you don't announce it yourself, the press will get suspicious."Roderick frowned. A sudden, hollow ache tore through his chest, leaving him restless. He stared through the glass at my pale, lifeless face. He pushed down the strange dread in his gut and gave a cold command."Report to me the second she wakes up."He turned and walked away, heading straight for the coronation on the top floor. The

"Seven works fine," I said, meeting Roderick's sharp stare. My voice did not shake. An earlier death made zero difference to me.Roderick's jaw tightened. He searched my face for anger or tears. He found nothing. My eyes were completely empty. He finally looked away, wrapped his arm around Chloe, and led her out the door. The next night, the full moon rose.Inside the underground vault, heavy blackout curtains blocked out the moonlight entirely.Near the inner gate, Nora held a white sterilization gown, crying uncontrollably."Doctor, please let me come with you! Your wolf is still wounded. You will die out there without medical support!""Don't be stupid, Nora." I pulled off my coat and tucked the patent transfer papers into her uniform. "It's not much, but it's enough. Live your life. Build your own clinic. You have real talent. Don't waste your life on some Alpha's empty promises like I did."Two armored guards stepped up from behind. They grabbed Nora's arms and dragged her backwar
