Chapter 3

Autor: Soda
"Take it. If border patrol stops you, flash this card and drop our name. Don't cause trouble."

Before I climbed into the SUV, my father shoved a black card into my hand.

No hug. Just cold instructions.

"It has high-level clearance. Burn it once you cross the border. No one can ever link you back to this family."

I gripped the card tight and pulled open the passenger door.

The SUV rolled out of the garage, heading straight north.

We hit the Gray Zone market on the outskirts of Seattle. I pressed two fingers against the collar.

"Pull over. The electrodes are misfiring. My wolf is rejecting the metal. I need neutralizing herbs from the corner shop."

Lucas hit the brakes. He gave me a sharp look. "Don't play games, Winslet. The Alpha expects us back at the tower in two hours."

"I am wearing a shock collar, Lucas. Where would I run?" I held up the clearance card. My voice stayed completely dead. "Or do you want me going into shock on the road and ruining your little plan tonight?"

He waited two seconds, then unlocked the doors. "Ten minutes. I will wait at the curb."

I pushed the door open. I walked past the herb shops and slipped down a narrow alley. Mud and trash pooled around my boots. I scanned the card against the rusted back door of an underground clinic.

The dealer behind the counter sat up straight the second he spotted the Winston crest on the black plastic.

"I need a neurotoxin," I whispered over the counter. "Pure aconite. A massive dose. Something that kills an inner wolf the second a mate bond snaps."

The dealer shifted on his feet. The black card kept his mouth shut. He turned around and slid a tiny glass vial across the wood.

I palmed the vial and reached into my coat. With one flick of my thumb, I popped open my field kit. The poison snapped into the empty slot meant for glucose. I clicked the lid shut.

I walked back to the street and climbed into the SUV.

"Get your herbs?" Lucas looked at my empty hands.

"I am a doctor. I work fast."

He nodded, asked nothing else, and hit the gas.

When we stepped out on the penthouse floor, the hallway was lined with cardboard boxes.

The cleaning crew was clearing out my room. My books, my notes, my things—tossed into rolling trash bins like junk.

Chloe leaned against the wet bar with a drink in her hand.

She saw me walk in. She crooked a finger at a guard, pointing at an industrial shredder.

She held a thick stack of handwritten notes. Roderick's handwriting. Three years of deployment notes, left on my pillow every time he led his enforcers into battle.

"Garbage takes up space," Chloe said. She shoved the first handful into the teeth of the shredder. "This is where it belongs."

Blades whined. The familiar cursive turned into confetti.

"Those belong to me." I stood in the doorway, staring right through her.

"Not anymore." Chloe took a sip of liquor. Her eyes dripped with venom. "Did you really think you mattered to him, Winslet? That time you had the high fever and he sat by your bed for days... you thought that was love?"

My chest tightened. I locked eyes with her.

Chloe laughed. She took two slow steps toward me.

"Funny how timing works, right? Enemies had my safehouse surrounded. Roderick leaked fake intel across the border. He told them his Luna was on her deathbed and he was losing his mind. He pulled the perimeter guards to make them lower their guard."

She leaned in close. Her breath smelled like gin.

"He sat by your bed wide awake, planning how to slaughter them and take me back. Your big romantic moment was just his bait."

Heavy boots echoed down the hall.

Roderick walked in.

He wore a dark tailored suit, towering over everyone in the room. He stopped when he saw the mess, his eyes finding mine.

"Is what she said true?" I asked, looking him dead in the eye.

Roderick looked away. He took the glass from Chloe's hand. His voice had no warmth.

"It happened in the past, Winslet. Picking at old wounds changes nothing. I had to get Chloe out alive."

No denial. Not even an apology.

"So every single part of it was fake," I let out a dry, cracked laugh.

Roderick's brow furrowed. Something shifted in his face, an irritated flash in his gray eyes, but he shut it down fast.

"I took care of you, Winslet. I kept your family safe. I gave you whatever lab equipment you asked for. I picked out your house in Florida myself."

He took a step forward, his broad frame blocking the light. His voice dropped low.

"Don't turn this into a scene. It won't do you any good."

"Hear that, sweetheart?" Chloe smiled and wrapped her arm around his bicep. "A stand-in getting three years of Alpha treatment ought to be grateful."

Roderick checked his watch, sliding back into his cold, commanding persona.

"Tomorrow night at nine. Under the full moon. The severance ceremony takes place in the lower vault. Lucas will fly you out on the chopper."

Chloe suddenly pouted. She tugged at his sleeve.

"Nine tomorrow? That won't work, Roderick. My welcome gala starts at nine. Having a severance ritual at the exact same hour... it's bad luck."

Roderick looked down at her. His gaze instantly softened. He paused for half a beat, then spoke without hesitation:

"Move it up two hours. Make it seven."

Roderick turned to his captain of the guard.

"Tell the team to be quick about it. Wrap it up before seven. I don't want anything delaying Chloe's fireworks."

I stood frozen, watching them.

Even the hour of my death had to yield to her celebration.

"You got a problem with that timeline, Winslet?" Roderick narrowed his gray eyes at me. His voice dropped an octave.

My burial came soon after.Nora carried out my final wishes. Roderick did not bring an escort of luxury cars. Only a single black SUV carried the heavy alloy pod up to the cold fir peak in the Rocky Mountains. It was far from the city. The air smelled crisp and clean, filled with the scent of the fir trees I loved.Freezing sleet blew across the loose gravel on the ridge. The grave was cut into the jagged rock near the cliff edge. A black marble headstone stood beside it. There was no family crest. No Alpha seal. Only a single name carved deep into the stone: Winslet.Pulleys groaned as the heavy pod went down into the frozen earth."Wait! Let me through!"My mother broke through the guard line and fell face-first into the mud."My Winslet was always scared of being alone. Let me talk to her..."Nora took a wide step and blocked the pit."Too little, too late," Nora said, staring down at the woman in the dirt. "Four years ago, the doctor knelt outside your estate in the pouring rain. D

"The guests have been waiting all night for you, Roderick."The flap of the tent was pulled back. Chloe walked in.She had changed out of her formal gown into a clean black coat. She glanced at my lifeless body on the metal table, then turned her eyes to Roderick. "She was weak. She couldn't handle the shock of breaking the bond. Pack leaders from across the continent are waiting at the cathedral. What are you even doing here?"Roderick stood by the table. He did not turn to look at her."Weak?" His voice was low, laced with deadly cold. "She drank pure wolfsbane."Chloe froze, then knit her brow. "That was her own choice. You gave her an out. You gave her enough money for a lifetime. Wasn't that enough? You put on quite a show these past three years just to keep me alive...""It was not a show." Roderick turned around fast and cut her off.The smug look on Chloe's face melted away.Roderick looked at her with hollow, empty eyes. "I lied to myself. I convinced myself I still loved you.

"Lock down the city! Bring every neuro specialist and life-support rig on the West Coast right now!"Within thirty minutes, searchlights blinded the makeshift medical tent.Power surged through the metal exam table. The defibrillator slammed down hard, once, then again. Six full vials of wolf-awakening serum were emptied. The glowing green liquid vanished into my veins without a spark. Nothing. All night long, the shock pads burned against my chest. Skin turned pale and raw.Dawn cracked across the sky in cold shades of gray. The monitor line stayed flat and dead. The chief specialist's knees gave out. He dropped hard onto the freezing floor, his voice shaking. "Her wolf is gone. There's nothing left to save..."The other doctors dropped their heads in unison. No one dared to look at the man by the table.Roderick did not draw his gun. He did not rage. He stood by the metal table, picked up a warm white cloth, and gently wiped the dried, black poison from the corner of my lips. His eye

Lucas's armored car was cut off halfway down the road.Seconds later, Roderick kicked his door open. The downpour soaked his formal uniform in an instant. The noise of the banquet was thirty miles behind him. Only one sentence echoed in his head: *She's dead*. He tracked down Lucas, and before his mind could catch up, he was already tearing down the highway."Give her to me," Roderick said, marching forward. A dull ache from the broken bond burned deep in his chest. It twisted his gut into knots.Lucas stepped out of the vehicle and blocked the door. His eyes were wild and stubborn. "Don't you touch her!""Know your place, Lucas," Roderick growled, keeping his voice low. Every word dripped with the heavy command of an Alpha. "Give me my mate.""Your mate?"Lucas let out a harsh laugh."You refused to mark her for three whole years. You don't get to call her your mate. She was with me for four years. I wasn't the best husband, but I treated her with care. Then you came with threats of b

The shrill alarm was still ringing through the soundproof glass. Lucas ignored it. He stepped forward, blocked the window, and kept his voice calm and respectful."Alpha, it's just the bond breaking. Her body is fighting the shock. Breaking a soul tie always rips through the wolf's nerves. The harder the shock, the cleaner the break. The life-support will take over. She'll wake up in four hours once we hit the safe zone."My father forced a quick, nervous smile. "Yes, Alpha. Everything followed the medical protocol. The guests are waiting upstairs. The news of Winslet's death is already out. If you don't announce it yourself, the press will get suspicious."Roderick frowned. A sudden, hollow ache tore through his chest, leaving him restless. He stared through the glass at my pale, lifeless face. He pushed down the strange dread in his gut and gave a cold command."Report to me the second she wakes up."He turned and walked away, heading straight for the coronation on the top floor. The

"Seven works fine," I said, meeting Roderick's sharp stare. My voice did not shake. An earlier death made zero difference to me.Roderick's jaw tightened. He searched my face for anger or tears. He found nothing. My eyes were completely empty. He finally looked away, wrapped his arm around Chloe, and led her out the door. The next night, the full moon rose.Inside the underground vault, heavy blackout curtains blocked out the moonlight entirely.Near the inner gate, Nora held a white sterilization gown, crying uncontrollably."Doctor, please let me come with you! Your wolf is still wounded. You will die out there without medical support!""Don't be stupid, Nora." I pulled off my coat and tucked the patent transfer papers into her uniform. "It's not much, but it's enough. Live your life. Build your own clinic. You have real talent. Don't waste your life on some Alpha's empty promises like I did."Two armored guards stepped up from behind. They grabbed Nora's arms and dragged her backwar
