Chapter 5

Author: Returning Moon
Stanley held a storybook and read softly to Hannah until she finally fell asleep.

Sabrina moved closer. The space between them grew smaller until their lips were almost touching.

Stanley turned his head away. "Don't do this."

Sabrina draped herself over him, resting her head on his shoulder. "Do you think I'm beneath you because I'm divorced and have a child? Is that it?"

"No," Stanley denied. "I'm already married."

"But you should have been mine." Sabrina's tone was filled with absolute certainty.

She looked at him intently, and their gazes locked.

"Stanley, don't deny it. You've fallen for me. Even though you've known Jaycee for years, you've still fallen for me. You're just used to Jaycee. It's not love.

"You love me, Stanley," she said with conviction.

Stanley averted his gaze. After a long pause, he finally spoke, "Don't think about this. Rest for now."

He stood up and left, almost as if fleeing the room.

I couldn't help but let out a bitter laugh.

I was the first to notice Stanley's growing feelings for Sabrina.

The first time I met Sabrina was the day I tried to end my life. It was the anniversary of my parents' death.

In the past, Stanley would always be with me on that day, trying to cheer me up and make me smile. But that day, he didn't come back.

I called him countless times, but he didn't answer.

I went to my parents' graves alone. In my dazed state, I thought they had come to take me away.

Without hesitation, I slit my wrists.

When I woke up, I was in the hospital and saw Stanley there. He was embracing Sabrina with one arm, and his profile was filled with tenderness.

I rushed forward to grab him. "Who is she, Stanley? What's your relationship with her?"

"What's wrong with you, honey?" His voice became urgent when he saw the cuts on my wrist.

I asked again, "Who is she?"

While looking at my injuries, Stanley explained, "She's a classmate of mine. She fainted, and I brought her to the hospital. Don't misunderstand."

But Sabrina's hostility was clear. I saw it immediately.

I asked, "Do you remember what day it is?"

Stanley paused for a moment, then suddenly remembered. He quickly hugged me and apologized over and over again.

The once cold embrace now carried the scent of perfume, which felt sickening to me.

I pushed him away with all my strength, screaming, "My parents raised you! And you don't even remember their death anniversary?"

"I'm sorry. It's my fault. I promise it won't happen again," he said.

I wasn't listening. I continued to shout at him, "You ungrateful turd! You—"

Suddenly, Sabrina stepped in front of Stanley and glared at me. "If it weren't for Stanley, your family would've fallen apart long ago. Your parents' deaths weren't Stanley's fault."

I slapped her as hard as I could. The force left my hand numb.

The slap landed on Stanley's face, leaving a clear mark.

Stanley sighed. As he looked at me, his expression was full of exhaustion and reproach.

He said, "Your stubbornness caused your parents' death. Will you only be satisfied after I die in front of you?"

I stared at Stanley in silence for a long time.

Back then, my relatives tried to take over the Hartman family's business. They slandered me, saying that I caused my parents' deaths.

Stanley had been the one to stand up against them and protect me. Yet now, he said I was the cause of my parents' deaths.

I turned and walked away.

Stanley grew anxious and tried to catch up, but Sabrina stopped him.

This was the first time he had chosen Sabrina over me.

He went home and apologized to me for a long time, and I forgave him.

He promised never to leave me again, but time and time again, he chose Sabrina.

During the fire at the postpartum care center, he rushed in to save Sabrina, completely unaware that I was being engulfed by the flames.

The next day, Stanley was woken up by the alarm.

He had probably not slept well. Dark circles were visible under his eyes.

He pressed the alarm off and saw the reminder on it—Father's Day School Activity.

It was an alarm I had set for him, hoping he wouldn't forget the event with Lily.

Stanley sent me a message. "I'll be there on time for Lily's school activity. Let's talk after that."

I watched Stanley lose control with a cold gaze. I didn't actually feel a thing. The five-year-old he referred to was when we first met. I had been abducted by a group of criminals, and Stanley was one of the children held captive with me. He protected me as we escaped.Upon learning that he was an orphan, my family adopted him, and we grew up together for more than 20 years. But Sabrina's appearance shattered everything until I was consumed by the fire."Sign this and arrange for her cremation. Let Jaycee rest in peace." Harry handed over the body release form to Stanley, but his eyes never left me.Supporting himself against the iron bed, Stanley struggled several times before finally managing to stand up.He clutched my charred body, and his arms tightened around me."No, I won't let Jaycee be burned. She must be in so much pain. She must be so scared. Jaycee is mine. No one can touch her."Harry ignored Stanley's frenzy, calmly stating, "You've already killed Jaycee. Can't y

I let out a sneer, suddenly looking forward to the dogfight between Stanley and Sabrina. As expected, Sabrina got Stanley drunk that very night. She dressed in my clothes and mimicked my appearance to seduce him. When Stanley woke up and saw Sabrina lying next to him, it took him a moment to process what had happened.Sabrina shed her usual weak and innocent demeanor and used Stanley's company to threaten him.Since Stanley let his guard down around her, she managed to steal confidential information from his company. In exchange for the company's interests, he agreed to divorce me but firmly refused to marry her.He sent me a long voice message. "We'll get divorced first. I'll transfer the assets to your name. Once everything is sorted out, we'll remarry."Before he could get a reply from me, Harry arrived with Lily."Where's Jaycee?""You need to go identify Jaycee's body, or she can't be cremated."Both Stanley and Harry spoke at the same time.Stanley froze. His voice tre

Stanley ended the call and immediately dialed for a video call.On the screen, Lily's eyes were swollen from crying. Her tears fell without stopping."When Grandma passed away, Mommy told me Grandma became a star. Does that mean Mommy's gone too? Daddy, I'll never see Mommy again."Lily broke down into loud sobs.I floated beside Stanley, reaching out to gently stroke the screen where Lily appeared."Baby, don't cry. Becoming a star means I'll always be with you. Even when you become an old lady, I'll still be by your side."Stanley's face darkened as he frowned. "Tell your mom to pick up the phone. Don't think you can fool me with a photo like that."Lily didn't respond, only crying harder.Stanley's patience was running thin. He raised his voice, calling out, "Jaycee Hartman! Jaycee!"His voice grew louder, but there was no answer. His tone turned cold as he threatened me, "I'll give you three days, Jaycee. If you don't come back, I'll have Lily expelled. I mean it. Lily's

Stanley didn't arrive at the hospital until nightfall.By then, someone else was already at Lily's side—Harry Davidson.Lily seemed much better. There was a smile on her face, and she sounded excited. "Are you serious, Mr. Davidson? You'll really take me to see Mommy?"Harry hesitated before replying, "Your mom is at my house. But Lily, you need to get better first. If you're not well, your mom will be sad."Lily nodded enthusiastically. "I'll get better soon! I want to see Mommy!"Stanley's icy voice cut through the moment as he stormed across the room and grabbed Harry by the collar. "Where are you hiding Jaycee? Don't forget. She's my wife."Harry glared back and threw a hard punch. "You don't deserve to say her name. The biggest mistake I made was handing her to you.""Daddy!" Lily ran forward in a panic. "Mr. Davidson, don't hit Daddy! If you want to hit someone, hit me instead."Stanley shoved Lily away forcefully, sending her tumbling to the floor. He pointed at her and

I couldn't help but laugh bitterly.Just then, Stanley's phone rang. I leaned closer to see the screen. It was Emelia Schmidt, Lily's homeroom teacher. My chest tightened, and I held my breath.Emelia's voice came through the speaker. "Is this Lily Atkinson's dad?""Yes," Stanley replied. Before he could say more, Emelia's anxious words poured out, "You need to come to the school right away. Lily's been hurt badly, and I can't reach her mom.""Okay, I'll be right there." After a pause, Stanley cleared his throat and asked awkwardly, "Uh... Which class is Lily in again?"I hovered beside Stanley, desperate to see Lily. When I finally saw her, tears streamed down my face, and my entire being trembled.Lily was filthy, missing one shoe, and the bandage on her face was soaked with blood.Stanley frowned deeply.
